Bierleichen Heavy Metal German Beer Hall

There’s a new Heavy Metal German Beer Hall in Ridgewood, Queens. Nice place. They have big giant beers, including a big boot shaped mug, and sausages and pretzels. There was a guy there that looked like Brendan Fraser in Airheads. It was fitting.

Finger on the Pulse – Sarah Simmons (Birds & Bubbles)

So the Finger on the Pulse DJs often have these summer BBQ’s where’s they have a some-what known chef cooking up food and a some-what known DJ playing tunes. They are usually around $10 tix in advance for a plate of food and an alcoholic drink. Usually held at Good Co. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Last week’s event brought in Sarah Simmons from Birds & Bubbles. She made a pretty tasty chicken dish with slaw and rice. The dipping sauce was good. I forget the brand. It was jarred sauce. It also came with a Brooklyn Brewery beer and a Jameson shot with it. Pretty great deal for $10.

Secret tip… I somehow bought a ticket that was discounted for $5. I don’t know why it was discounted on Eventbrite, but it was. Maybe because it hadn’t sold out and I bought it the day before. It was vague what I would get for $5, but I did get everything the $10 ticket got.

Keep up with the Finger on the Pulse BBQs on FoodRepublic.com. Sign up for their newsletters there.

Playland Motel @ Rockaway Beach

What used to be locals only Tap & Grill Clambar is now the young hipster loving Playland Motel. They totally renovated this place. Looks fun like the name. I did have a good time out there. The backyard and the backroom is nice. I’m sure they’ll do well when people are walking back from the beach towards the subway.

The Shop – Bushwick’s New BBQ Motorcycle Bar

There’s this huge motorcycle garage/bar/Barbecue restaurant/music venue that recently opened up right off the Jefferson L stop in Bushwick, aka Jefftown. I just can’t believe how huge it is. Big American flag behind the stage with a backline. Sports on several TVs. Looks like it’ll be a good spot to watch football when Fall rolls around. Not many places to watch football while eating food in this area.

Even though it’s in soft open right now, I’ve come by a couple of times. First time I had the Bloody Mary with the Rib in it. Looks awesome. Rib was cold though. I guess it has to be, because it would fuck up the Bloody Mary. I came back and got the ribs hot and they are really good. Great rub flavor on the bark. And the pulled pork sandwich was tasty. Really good barbecue for New York. And for barbecue not being existent (previously) in Bushwick, this is awesome.

Now looking at the pics, I see that you’re supposed to pick up your own food at another window. LOL. I think that’s why we ended up eating someone else’s order. There was some confusion. I was drunk, I didn’t realize. The other people ordered well at least.

The Shop is going to open officially during the Bushwick Open Studios (June 5th-7th). That’s an art festival spanning all around the neighborhood in art spaces and even people’s personal apartments.

Tutu’s

Tutu’s is a hip looking restaurant bar in Bushwick. Looks like a cool place for outdoor brunch in the summer. I went after work one night, during Happy Hour (which is until 8pm). Seemed like I should partake in the Burger and Beer Happy Hour deal $10, but went with what sounded really good to me –Braised Lamb Shank. It was just meh. Not worth $24 to me.

So then I ordered the Burger and Beer special $10, because fuck it. That’s a good deal and a pretty darn good burger. Just needed a little salt. But really good.

Big Bucket Premium Margarita Mix

Continuing my Thanksgiving trip to Dallas, I made a joke about having a Dallas BBQ Texas Sized Margarita in my last post. If you live in NYC, you’d get it. And it manifested in real life.

We got a Big Bucket Premium Margarita Mix. All you do is add tequila and put it in the fridge. It has spout built in. Super easy!

I think the only people that drank it was my brother in law and me. My mom had taste and I think she approved. A little too sweet though.

The Anchored Inn

Went over to Sam Jayne’s old place to check out the aftermath of Scumfest, the scummiest music fest in Brooklyn. Do you have what it takes?

02 Scumfest aftermath

That was a crazy two-night party. Anyway, we headed over to The Anchored Inn for some food. Really cool bar with black velvet paintings all over in an area that seems so desolate.

Had some really good food there. Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, Brussel Sprouts, Chili-Lime Roasted Peanuts, Beef Chili. I love this place. I wish I knew about this place when I lived a little closer.

Takashi Murakami’s New Exhibit and The Bodega (Bushwick)’s Sausage

The night before Veteran’s Day was pretty eventful. I know I drank a lot, but what I can remember is that I went to the opening reception of Japanese pop artist Takashi Murakami’s new exhibit at the Gagosian Gallery. I’ve never seen so many hipsters and Asians in one place since I looked in the mirror.

01 Takashi Murakami NYC 2014

I love Murakami’s work and this was some awesome stuff. Now I have a question. If it’s free to see his art, how do they make money? Murakami or the gallery? Do they sell this stuff? And who has the space in their NY apartment to hold these gigantic sculptures?

Then I went to Housing Works to check out the Night School: Lowbrow Lectures, where they talked about things like “The Quantum Mechanics of Time Travel in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” “Hello Kitty is a Cat: A Polemic,” “The Ron Swanson of the 18th Century,” and “The Complete History of Cats on the Internet.” I remembered getting pissed off at the guy who made fun of Tim Tebow with an animated GIF of the football bouncing off Tebow’s head to make a point about time travel. What a dick.

Then I headed back to Bushwick and hung out at Cobra Club for quarter of Monday Night Football. Then ended up at The Bodega where there was more football. I got a the Basic German Sausage (Grilled Krainerwurst from Ridgewood’s Karl Ehmer, served on pretzel roll with sauerkraut and chips $8). It was really good. Cam Newton wasn’t.
