Northern Bell’s Smoked Dry-Rubbed Wings

Sometimes it’s hard to find a place in a hipster neighborhood to watch football. Northern Bell (see brunch) has the NFL Sunday Ticket with lots of TVs, cheap pitchers of beer deal and these really good smoked/dry-rubbed wings. We ordered it with the chipotle aioli sauce on the side. We did have the option to have the wings sauced up, but I realized that would look pretty gross with the yellow/orange/pink sauce. But dang, these wings are great!

80th Anniversary of the Bloody Mary

Did you know it was the 80th Anniversary of the Bloody Mary? I didn’t. I always just assumed it had always existed since the dawn of mankind. And I didn’t know it was invented in New York. I didn’t know any of this until I went to Madame Geneva for a Bloody Marys hosted by Absolut. They showed us how to make a traditional Bloody Mary and then top it with Saxon and Parole’s famous DYI Bloody Mary Bar , which could get out of hand.

Absolut Bloody Mary

They also served us this year’s winner of the Chopped Best Bloody Mary from the NYC Food & Wine Festival. It was good. Here’s the recipe.

Tabanero Spicy Bloody Mary Mix

I’ve been thinking of making some at-home Bloody Marys. I drink much every weekend at brunch. Figure it’s time to make them at home. Save a little dough on my alcoholism.

Was sent this large bottle of Tabanero Spicy Bloody Mary Mix. It really is spicy. Good with vodka and great on it’s own. I just drank a glass sans vodka tonight with my salad. I feel a little buzzed for some reason.

Angry Orchard’s The Muse Cider

I was invited to this Drink and Draw to introduce Angry Orchard’s new cider, The Muse. I liked it. I’ve never really drank cider before. I thought it would be like beer. But no, it’s like apple juice. It’s really good if you think about it …because apple juice tastes good and beer kind of tastes like piss.

Don’t get me wrong. I do like to drink beer and drink it regularly, but I don’t think it necessarily tastes good. Cider is tasty, but seemingly harder to drink a lot of because it’s so sweet. I probably would kill a six pack if I was still eight years old.

03 Angry Orchard Drink and Draw

This was my drawing. I thought it was good until I saw other people’s drawings that looked realistic. But I thought they were cheating because they were using their fingers to rub in the colors …apparently, you’re supposed to do that.

Croxley’s Abbey’s 10cent Wings

I’ve always been intrigued at places with cheap wing nights, because wings can be pretty expensive at around $1+ at most places. I know that Croxley’s in the East Village has always had them, but I figured it was probably always packed. So they just opened up a Croxley’s in Williamsburg and they also have the 10cent wings (boneless) and 20cent classic wings (with bones). The deal is during Sunday all day & night, Saturdays 12-5pm, Mon-Thurs 4pm-1am. So pretty much almost all the time. Plus they are doing it during all the March Madness games. Sweet!

05 Twenty Cent Wings - Croxley's Abbey

I was thinking of getting some boneless and classic, but at 10 wing minimum per order (read the ordering rules below in the pics), I knew I couldn’t finish. So I went with ten 20cent classic with bones. They have lots of flavors. I asked the waitress what the “Fighting Irish” was. She told me not to get it. “It is gross.” I’ll trust her and just get the regular classic like a real man. They came out quick and were really crispy. Reminded me of how Korean wings are really crispy. Great deal!

I’m pretty excited about this new sports bar in Williamsburg. It’s huge. Easy to get a table during some pretty big games. Good attentive service. Great deal on wings!

Ben Sargent (aka Doctor Klaw) met up with me there for a drink. He had this really awesome red Cushman truckster parked out front.

Ron Burgundy (Anchorman 2) Scotch Whisky

I found this bottle of whisky at my local liquor store –Ron Burgundy of Anchorman 2. The promotional campaign is a little odd. They have a life-size cutout of Will Ferrell in the store, but no mention of why. I just happened to find the bottle on the shelf …and if I didn’t see the Will Ferrell cutout earlier, I would have never made the connection.

Tuffet Cheese Meat Bar

I finally went on an OKCupid date. We met at Tuffet in East Williamsburg. I think it’s a pretty good date spot. It looks pretty cool and they serve cheese and meat. I ordered a plate of Pâté and Prosciutto ($10). Unfortunately, she was vegetarian.

Mulholland’s New Burger

Dang, I’ve never seen so many places closed on Thanksgiving. I thought at least more bars would be open. I just wanted something to eat, drink and watch football. Mulholland’s sports bar was open!

They had a new menu. The burger was even called “New Burger.” I was thinking how new can a burger be. I ordered it without cheese. Then ten seconds after, I thought to myself if I was going to kill myself today, I might as well get cheese. YOLO. So I went back to the bar and asked for cheese, but the bartender said she just put the order in the computer without. I was confused why it was so hard to add cheese after I ordered. So I thought, “oh well, I guess I won’t kill myself then …Not without cheese.”

Yeah, this new burger looked different. No lettuce and tomato. Just two greasy patties on a giant brioche bun. It was good. I was trying to figure out what it reminded me of. It was like a bigger version of what Wimpy (from Popeye) would eat? Then it hit me. It tastes like Krystal burgers. I liked it. Greasy!
