Taste of Bushwick 2015 (PHOTOS)

I had a really good time at the Taste of Bushwick. Located on the lot of the Boar’s Head factory, all these local restaurants, bars and shops giving out tastings in support of the Bushwick Starr. I got full and really drunk. A great deal for $35/40. Only weird thing was why were so many places making food that they normally don’t serve? …like Friztl’s grilling up Pork Belly and Montana’s Pulled Pork with Grits. I don’t know. It was good though. Till Next Year.

Nha Trang One and Shred For Your Life 2014

I headed out to check out the Shred For Your Life guitar competition last night at Santos Party House. But before, I had a bite to eat at Nha Tran One Vietnamese nearby. I remember going with my coworkers here years ago and really dug the fried frog legs.

This time, I got the Canh Chua Ca (Hot & Sour Fish soup). Pretty big for the small order $9.50. It had a lot of salmon in it. Very good tasting. Although I couldn’t finish it, because I also got an order of spring rolls. I love how they give you the lettuce and mint to wrap them up with.

05 Shred For Your Life 2014 Guitar Competition

Then over to the Shred For Your Life. It has all the majesty and showmanship of an air guitar competition, but with real guitars. There was a guy with a horse head and a guy dressed like an ancient Chinese god playing this tiny toy guitar –and he ripped it. I was rooting for him. But the winner was really really good. He plays in the band, the Giraffes.

Before the competition, I ran into an old friend so I walked over to him. Then I realized that Zooey Deschanel was standing next to us and I was like “Oh, isn’t that that actress?” And he acted like he didn’t know who she was. Acted like he never saw Elf. I couldn’t believe it. It was like he trying to play it too cool. I’m not sure he even turned to look at her when I asked. He had to know who I was talking about. Now I get what “SMH” means.

Then when I left the show and walked to the subway stop, I realized that I was on the wrong side of the street for the uptown train. So I started running across the street because the traffic light was about to turn. Then I realized Zooey Deschanel was right in front of me and it looked like I was about to chase her …and I think her friend turned around and his eyes got big when he saw me. Then I tried to play it cool, by acting like I didn’t know who she was and started walking in another direction.

Brooklyn Beefsteak 2014

I went to the Brooklyn Beefsteak at the Bell House this past Sunday. Unlimited Pat LaFrieda steak bites on a little crostini toasted slice of baguette bread, unlimited McSoreley’s, pickles, peanuts, and entertainment $50+. Actually, when I bought my ticket, I was thinking this was totally something else. But it was a lot of fun. Even going by myself.

01 Brooklyn Beefsteak 2014

I came late and joined in on one of the communal tables. Luckily, it was one that was serious about their bread stacking. You see… Most people don’t eat the bread. Need to make room in their stomach for meat. And they use the leftover bread to stack. I snuck in a few bites of bread with my meat and it was actually pretty good that way …especially with horseradish sauce made with Sir Kensington mayonnaise.

Anyway, back to the bread stacking. The gang next to me were plenty resourceful. First, they got the rest of our table to join forces and give them their bread. It started to look like a nice tower. I thought it was going to be a snowman, because there was an arm on it attached by a coat hanger wire. It turned out to be there to balance the weight though. Some duck tape help kept it together. Then they tore it down figuring they should start over, much to the dismay of the guy that was further down the table.

15 Brooklyn Beefsteak 2014

Then in came some green wire poles that someone got from a garden nearby and the use of a full pickle jar for support. They had to stand on the benches to assemble it. That’s how tall it was. And then came in some shoelaces to hold it down like a Christmas tree.

Our only competition was the gang of jocks nearby, who stood along the front of the stage like they were Hell’s Angels security. I was worried they were going to kick our ass us if we won, but I think that was just drunk thinking. They had a nice tall stack without any apparent extra accessories …but surely not taller than our table’s.

20 Brooklyn Beefsteak 2014

Then Beefsteak Betty (the Master of Ceremonies that looks like a burlesque/Suicide Girl with a huge bosom) came over to measure our bread stack. I think I was taking a picture of her and then she stuck out her cheek. So I kissed her, thinking that’s what she meant. I think she was actually just posing for the camera.

We didn’t win. Although I’m pretty sure we were the tallest. They probably knocked off points for the shoelaces and stolen garden equipment.

As everyone was finishing up, our server asked if we needed anything else. I thought she was flirting with me, but I slowly realized she was waiting for a tip. I think the singer in the Rockabilly band mentioned to tip at the end, but everyone was drunk and already walking out. They should make the tipping part clearer, like when you buy your tickets. Then I won’t mistake the servers with flirting with me.

Food at Barclays Center

I’ve had the pleasure to go to the Barclays Center twice recently. I didn’t realize all the popular Brooklyn foodie vendors they had (Calexico, L&B Spumoni Gardens, Fatty ‘Cue, Juniors, etc.) Makes a lot of food sense and business sense.

First time, Sam and I went to a boxing match. I really wanted to try the famous L&B Spumoni Gardens Sicilian pizza. It was okay for $6.75. Decent doughy pizza.

And then I got the Calexico Loaded Nachos bowl $11.50 that I saw everyone walking around with. It was alright. Although I was starting to get the feeling that these places are not quite up to snuff compared to their real location counterparts. Like the nachos almost seemed like generic chips with more interesting ingredients than you’d get at Madison Square Gardens. I felt the same way at Citi Field. They have awesome local food branded vendors, but they are not quite up the quality you’d expect. But still, Barclays Center food is way better than say MSG, where it’s like generic overpriced skating rink food.

The second time I came back to Barclays Center was for the Amnesty International concert. Lots of great bands and a lot I didn’t even realize were performing like Lauren Hill and the guy from Boomtown Rats. He sang one of my favorite songs, I Don’t Like Mondays. I even got stuck in an elevator with Pussy Riot for about five minutes. I didn’t realize it was them at first. I couldn’t figure out why the elevator wasn’t moving, but some guy was trying to get their autograph, so the attendant kept it open. Then they kicked me off because they were going down to the off-limits area. Pussy Riot is cute. I gave the brunette a half wink as the elevator door closed.

I got a Cheddar Bratwurst sausage from Brooklyn Bangers. I figured it’s probably the same product they sell at other places and also Sam got a dog last time and it looked plump and juicy. I guess it was good. I think I put too much feexin’s (sauerkraut, banana peppers) on it. Should have just ate it straight.

Anyway, the point is that Barclays has way better food than traditional sports venues. But I feel like they all could do better.

An Adventurous Foodraiser for the Phillippines

Last week, Food Curated and Gastronauts threw a big fundraiser food party at the Woods in Williamsburg. It was a benefit for the Philippines. And I love Filipino food. Lots of good food from Filipino restaurants I’ve heard of and some I haven’t …but glad to know about.

The highlights for me:
Lechon Whole Roasted Pig Sandwiches from Engeline’s – pour some vinegar and a bottle of this Mang Tomas All Purpose Sauce. I need to get me a bottle.

Venison Adobo and Bone Marrow Fried Rice from Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Brunch – the line for this was worth it.

Flan from Salo (pop up dinners) – at this point, I was pretty drunk and was running my mouth with the girl who was serving this. I felt like I was talking to her about how much I loved going to my Filipino friend’s parent’s house, because they serve so much good food like Pancit noodles and Lumpia spring rolls (which I luckily got to eat at this fundraiser). I don’t think she was too annoyed by my rambling.

Magician Michael Chaut – There was a magician. He showed me some cool tricks like bending my quarter and then somehow making it disappear after I put it in my pocket …or maybe I was just dropping stuff all over the place.

I totally forgot to eat the Balut (the hard boiled egg with the premature fetus).

This is the rest of the stuff.

Brooklyn Night Bazaar

I went to Brooklyn Night Bazaar this past Saturday. It’s a flea market with food and music. I mainly went to see Kitty Pryde. I’ve read that it usually gets really packed. But on this particular night it wasn’t too crowded. Probably because it was super cold outside.

The food was tasty. I got Oxtail Stew ($10) from Spur Tree and a Chicken Pot Pie ($4) from Handpie. I was sucking on the bones.

I was pretty blown away from this band called Party Supplies. They reminded me of MGMT meets Talking Heads.

Dang, there were so many hot girls at the Bazaar. But I was trying to do the math and I think I might be old enough to be their dads. But then again, I kept getting carded when I went to buy beer. So maybe the girls thought they’re old enough to be my dad.

Casting Food Network Star

I’ve food blogged the burger at the Galway Hooker Pub before. The bacon looks pretty good now that I look at the pics again. I wonder if you can get the burger or a beer while waiting.

Anyway since I won’t be auditioning, I decided to host my own show today. It’s called Beauty Tips with Jason Lam.
