Hot Sauce Round Up
We ain’t playing around for our MayDay Danger Party this Saturday. I went out to Kalustyan’s, where they have a pretty amazing selection of hot sauces. They even had the Melinda’s Naga Jolokia sauce about $2 cheaper than the place I bought mine. I stood in the aisle for quite a while, memorized at all the crazy ass labels. Brought four interesting ones back to the office to try. Note that I’ve been running on the Melinda’s ghost pepper sauce, so maybe my tolerance is different –not to sound macho or like Randy Savage. Here are my thoughts as I go…
1) Swamp Gator hot sauce (Gator Hammock, $6.99) – Not too spicy, more easy pour, somewhat cajun flavor with that cayenne peppers and garlic. I remember my friend Ryan had this in his cupboard and thought it was tasty on whatever we were eating. This is more like a dousing sauce. Go Gators!
2) Rectal Rocket Fuel (Sauce Crafters, $5.99) – Not really too spicy on first bite. Slight afterkick, but still not bad. My butt did feel sweaty, but it might have already been that way.
3) Dumb Ass sauce (Southwest Specialty Food, $7.99) – dumb, not spicy. vinegary smelling. wtf? …I guess it’s a standard habanero sauce. Any other day, this could be a good go-to hot sauce on my baked beans.
4) Blair’s Ultra Death Sauce with Jersey Fury (Extreme Food, $12.99) – Made with Bhut Jolokia (Ghost Pepper) and Habanero. Smells kinda like dates. Tastes similar to Melinda’s, but sweet on first taste, then the kick comes swelling in and hotter than Melinda’s. Feeling it now. Alright now, I’m sweating. Staying with me. 5mins later. still sweating, and still feeling the heat in my mouth. Feels good though. Seems to enhance the food more than drown it out with heat. I suppose because this is just a dab. You really gotta do this one dab or droplet at a time. …I think I just got high off this. I wonder if I can get fired for hot sauce.
I’ll be bringing these hot sauces, including Melinda’s, whole dried Ghost Pepper pods & chocolate truffles to the party Saturday for you guys to try. Feel free to bring your own favorite hot sauce to show off or maybe a loaf of bread to soak up the spice.
Pepsi Throwback vs Mexican Pepsi
I got curious after writing my last post, that I ran to the Mexican grocery in my neighborhood to picked up a Mexican Pepsi in what looks like an old recycled glass bottle (with scratch marks). It was next to the Mexican Coca-Cola and Fanta, all in recycled bottles as well. Also picked up one of those new Pepsi Throwbacks (the new retro-looking soda highlighting its use of real sugar) at another bodega.
Generally these Mexican sodas have real sugar in them. I’m not sure if some bottlers have switched to high-fructose corn syrup because of this lawsuit (Pepsi sues distributor for selling the Mexican version in the US), but there was a sticker label attached to the bottle possibly because of it. The label said it contains High-fructose corn syrup and/or Sucrose.
Comparing the Mexican Pepsi and Pepsi Throwback:
– They tasted very very similar, which leads me to believe this particular Mexican Pepsi has real sugar. If there’s a difference in flavor, it could be based on factors such as what stayed cooler (in the plastic or glass container), which stayed carbonated longer (with twist or pop off tops), and what I tasted first. It was almost psychological if I thought one tasted different.
– Both really sweet. Much sweeter than regular sodas I’m used to. Does that make it taste better? I guess so? It’s a different type of sweet. Like Russ said, “It taste like a Slurpee.”
– I didn’t know if I should be drinking out of the Mexican Pepsi bottle. How old is it? Who’s mouth has been on it?
– The Mexican Pepsi is more retro-cool. Being in an old bottle makes it more retro. And not trying to be retro, makes it more cool.
It’s a good thing Pepsi is bringing real sugar back to the U.S. It gives people the opportunity to taste what it used to be like or what it is like south of the border. I suppose you can debate the health benefits of sugar over HFCS. But I suppose you can debate the health benefits of not drinking soda at all.
Midtownlunch’s Street Meat Palooza 2
Check out this round up Midtown’s Street Meat Lamb & Chicken over Rice combo platters. I gladly got to participate as a judge. I never thought I’d eat so much street meat in one sitting. It was awesome. I did end up liking the one with the rubber cardboard piece a lot. I wonder if it’s because I knew it was in there? I don’t know how much rubber cardboard adds to the flavor. Thanks Zach!
Hot Mini Cake Face-Off
You have the mini cream cake cart in front of Quickly and facing them right on the same side walk is the little old man in his shabby mini cake cart.
Quickly – 8 for $2, 24 for $5. Bigger. Shaped like corn on the cob. Custard cream in the center.
The old Chinese man – 20 for $1. Smaller. Cheaper. Little old Chinese Man.
Winner: Little Old Chinese Man because it’s cute.
Dang I could smell these wonderful cakes when I was writing this.

Happy Birthday Barack!
Went to finish the food battle amongst the neighboring halal restaurants on 29th St. $5.99 for lunch special of curry chicken, vegetable and salad. Not as spicy as the other, but probably better for my tummy. There’s so many shops with badass obama t-shirts on Broadway around this area. Maybe even get a Bernie Mac/Cedric the Entertainer pimp purple suit.
Chandni Restaurant – 11 W 29th St (btw Broadway & 5th Ave) NY 10001
……This President’s Day ’09 marks the release of Justice of the Unicorns’ new single “Preacher’s Kid”! Out now on iTunes, Amazon and everywhere else online.
This time I went into Golden Bowl as the ladies yell at me to come into their restaurant. Like I said before, it’s like Curry Road on 6th St where they battle for your patronage. One time I went up the stairs on 1st Ave and 6th St and two different guys tried to steer me into their Indian restaurants. Then one guy grabbed the other’s arm real hard and pointed a finger at his face. So I went with the aggressor. He seemed to have more determination.
