indikitch, The Indian Chipotle

I work really close to indikitch and it’s been open for about two years now. This is the first time I’ve been. I just figured if I want Indian food, I’d walk over to Murray Hill and partake in an AYCE buffet. But today they had a $2 deal for food and beer to celebrate Holi (Spring festival of colours). Long lines which I never do, but I just happened to walk by when the line was relatively short.

It’s pretty much like a Chipotle in the way it’s set up and the way it kind of looks, but with Indian food. I’m sure if you Google this place or look at Yelp reviews, a lot of people mention Chipotle.

You pick the Style (Feast, Biryani, Dosa, or Salad), then you pick your Main (Chicken Tikka, Pulled Pork Vindaloo, Goan Fish, Paneer Tika, Mushroom Kadai, Saag Paneer). All of these are priced similarity to Chipotle’s menu. And the feast is a lot of food. Kind of like getting a Burrito Bowl with a tortilla on the side.

The food is actually pretty good. I think it’s just as tasty as some of the Indian restaurants in Murray (Curry) Hill. Now I know. So if I don’t feel like walking too far, I could either go to indikitch …or Chipotle.

Haldi Indian Unlimited Lunch Special

This is a good alternative to Bhatti Grill in Curry Hill. It’s now a little cheaper at $10.95, they have beer specials during lunch and it’s very easy to get a table. It’s similar to Bhatti Grill in that it is unlimited food, but not a buffet. They bring the dishes out to you and they give a lot, even before you have a chance to ask for seconds.

Of my two recent visits, the food was a lot better the first time. Still good the second time though, but not as amazing. The naan can be super pillow-y and nice and the curry sauces very rich.

I think considering all the factors compared to more busier restaurants in the area, this is a great option. “I’ll be back.” –Arnold

Anjappar’s Unlimited Chicken Meal

They are advertising this Unlimited Chicken Meal (or Vegetarian) for $10 at Anjappar –Monday-Thursday only. Sounds good. Tastes good too!

It came out as a Thali (tray of a variety of different Indian food). Lollipop Tandoori Chicken drumsticks, pickled stuff, curry chicken, lentils, yogurt, brown liquidy thing and a dark purple sludgy thing. I think the dark purple sludge was some kind of slightly sweet chutney, probably made out of fruit.

I really liked this. You could order more of whatever you want. Although, I was good on just one tray though. Filled up.

Malai Marke Indian Restaurant

Jeff was in town and we went out to eat Indian food on the 6th Street strip. Went to Malai Marke –a more modern Indian restaurant among all the Indian restaurant there. Prices are higher. No BYOB or free complimentary wine. But pretty dang good food. The quality seems better.

The Fried Okra (Kukuri Bindi) was good. It was like fried shredded bits of stuff that’s leftover from frying stuff that you’d pick at.

The least impressive was the Mulligatawny soup. It was weird, because Jeff asked a few times if it was Mulligatawny. It didn’t look like what any of us thought Mulligatawny was. It was kind of important to find out what it was, since he’s vegan. I tried it. It had lentils and a lot of flour. I think it might have been vegan. But still, we weren’t positive it was really Mulligatawny. We were thinking it was going to be more like a brown thin vegetable soup, instead of creamy yellow soup without vegetables. But after Google Image searching, it’s possible that it was Mulligatawny.

The other entrees like Lamb Curry and Saag Paneer were really good. I ate too much and really felt the pain. I could have stopped well sooner. I don’t know what it is with good food that you feel like you should stuff your face.

Milon Bangladesh-Indian Restaurant

Justin asked if I wanted to meet him and his friend at Milon (one of those Christmas tree-lit Indian restaurants on 1st Ave and 6th St …see Panna II). I told him I wasn’t going to make it, but came anyway to surprise him. Joke was on me. I waited for twenty minutes inside the tiny restaurant before I went ahead and ordered. It reminded me of when I was young and had a bloody nose running down my face. I thought it would be funny if I laid in my sister’s bed acting dead. I heard her watching TV in the living room with a friend. Joke was on me. It was a long movie. I must’ve waited over thirty minutes. So I eventually cleaned up and went back to my room. She never knew.

I ordered the Chicken, Lamb, Beef and Vegetable Malai curry dish. It tasted good. It was made with almonds, bananas, mild spices in a cream sauce. I think this is the first dish I ordered when I came to one of these Indian restaurants ten years ago.

Justin and his friend eventually came. They ordered the Lamb Kurma, which is similar to my Malai, but not as sweet. The Coconut Naan bread was amazing. First time I’ve ever had that. I’d get that again definitely. The Reshmi Kebab (boneless pieces of chicken breast cooked in curry masala sauce with onion, pepper and tomatoes) was really good. I finished off the rest.

It wasn’t crowded this particular night, but there were two birthdays. They turned on the birthday techno Indian song and brought out free mango ice cream. Justin told them it was his friend’s birthday. We got free mango ice cream too. Then afterwards, they brought out ice cream for everyone else. It was a constant birthday party.

Tandoor Palace

I stopped by Shonali’s place to be a part of her podcast with Christian. I haven’t heard it yet. I’m always scared to listen to my voice. Anyway, afterwards Shonali took me to Tandoor Palace nearby in the Financial District. It’s above a shoe repair shop.

We got the lunch specials. If you get the option, get the Naan bread over the rice. It’s huge and made to order. The size is what makes it such more impressive than the rice. Rice is just rice.

The food was decent oily fast Indian curry style. Nice spicy heat.

Lahore Deli

Lunch break in Soho at Internet Week. It’s hard to find a cheap hole in the wall. Lahore is one of the few places –tiny unassuming Pakistani deli on a short off-shoot block.

The group in front of me was interesting. A guy brought his out-of-town female friends and he was so proud to them them this place, like he knew this was a great hidden gem in NY. I helped explain to one of the girls what Snapple was. I’m not sure she spoke English though.

I went with the Curry Chicken, Lentils and Eggplant $7 –forgoing the rice. I’m slow-carbing it. That and cutting back my drinking to two-thirds of the week. I’m so skinny now. I now have a jawl line.

I waited for them to microwave the food and received a container of slop with everything mixed up together. It was actually a really tasty container of slop. I’m sure the rice would have kept everything separate, but I enjoyed the mixture. Every now and then I spat out pieces of bone. That makes me feel cool while sitting on a bench outside of a boutique and watching the Soho girls walk by. I think I saw the T-Mobile girl.

I love the sweet Chai Tea!

Lahore Deli - 132 Crosby St (btwn Houston & Jersey St) New York, NY 10012

Oh, I also got front row seats to see Deepak Chopra at the Internet Week conference. He was wearing some slick red shoes. I wish I had a photo of them.
