Wahoo’s Fish Tacos in NYC

They recently opened up a Wahoo’s (the west coast fish taco chain) in Manhattan. The first couple of weeks, it was packed full of people in business suits. It’s calmed down a bit since, but still a good crowd. Sam and I were able to get a table pretty easily.

You order at the counter. But if you dine in, they bring it to you on real plates and silverware. The tacos look pretty good on real plates.

Tacos are $2.99. I got the combo (2 tacos with rice and beans) for $7.99 …a fish and a pork. I also ordered a Wahoo’s Green Sauce ($0.69).

The first bite was pretty good. Then I don’t know what happened. Everything was kinda dry and bland. At least it was saved by that tasty Green Sauce (think Sophie’s style green sauce). I don’t know what I would’ve done without it. I’ll probably just come back to buy the Green Sauce (12 oz for $2.69).

Dining with Dondero: Izzoz Tacos (Austin, TX)

American singer-songwriter, David Dondero, is reporting in his meals from his current tour. He’s living my dream of playing music and eating on the road. Here’s Dave at Izzoz Tacos in Austin, Texas.

Austin, TX is one of my favorite towns on this planet to eat.   Breakfast tacos are very popular and can be found pretty much anywhere around the city.  In the past several years the food trailer trend has taken off like so many other places around the country.  On South 1st, my favorite trailer had recently moved to a new location.  They always blast terrible alternative modern rock like Puddle of Mud or some other similar shit.  They have the best tacos though so it’s worth suffering through their horrible musical taste.  Even better than Torchies.

They have a taco called the Bac Spin.  It’s scrambled eggs, bacon bits and spinach on a flour tortilla.  Their salsa is really distinctive with a more smokey flavor.  The price is cheap.  One taco fills me up for $2.25.  Their queso is also great.  That’s only if i’m really hungry.

I ordered the bac spin again and sat underneath a shade tree in the 105 degree heat.  This time i ordered 2 of them and was only able to finish 1 and a half.  I like Topo Chico sparkling Mexican mineral water to wash it down.  A nice way to start the day.  I wait at least 30 minutes before diving into Barton Springs.

Dining with Dondero: Taqueria Lupita’s (Detroit, MI)

American singer-songwriter, David Dondero, is reporting in his meals from his current tour. He’s living my dream of playing music and eating on the road. Here is Taqueria Lupita’s in Detroit, MI.

Mexican Village, Bagley and 18th. Detroit, MI. Wow who would have thought Detroit could bring it with the Mexican food. I went to a place called Lupita’s which claimed to be the house of the original Mexican taco. What attracted me to having Mexican food in Detroit was the fact that the flour tortilla factory was just down the street. I prefer tacos on flour tortillas so I was in. Not sure what part of Mexico that comes from but they offer that option here. I ordered 1 carne asada and 1 pollo asada.Plus a coctel del camaron. All this for only $8.48.

First I got the tacos. The carne asada seemed fresh but the pollo was dried out like it’s been sitting on a prep line for 5 hours. Traditional tacos served with onion and cilantro.. plus the various salsas which came with the chips when I sat down. I give the carne asada a B+ and the pollo asada a C+. The flour tortillas were obviously just made and excellent. They made the whole dish a grade higher. A+ plus for them.. The service was really quick. I got the tacos about 3 minutes after I ordered them.

The shrimp cocktail came after I finished the tacos. This was basically shrimp, avocado, onions, and cilantro in a watery brine served with crackers.. I usually avoid seafood on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. Due to most restaurant delivery schedules. A chef friend of mine told me once that most restaurants get their fresh seafood deliveries on Wednesday or Thursday for the upcoming weekend. Thus if you order it Sunday-Tuesday chances are higher of being spoiled. Not sure how true that is and I’m sure it varies wherever you go. The finer restaurants probably get it delivered daily. The cheaper restaurants don’t especially if not by the coast. This was a Sunday but I took a chance on the shrimp which were probably frozen anyway. I’m glad I did. I fished them out with a spoon and put a little ketchup and hot sauce.. then salt and pepper on a cracker. It made for the perfect lunch. Not too much food and not too heavy. I was happy and I’d go back there.

The Tap & Grill Clambar at Rockaway Beach

The weather’s been great for us to check out Rockaway Beach. First stop was to get a beer of course. And that first bar we past was The Tap & Grill. It’s Rockaway’s oldest clambar since 1934. Some cool old pics on their site.

I ordered some fish tacos. Glad I did. The Rockaway Taco line around the corner was nuts. I just want to eat, not buggin out waiting. Fish tacos were great. Fish was like the kind you’d get if you ordered fish & chips. Cod I believe. The ceviche-style salsa punched up the flavor.

Rockaway Beach was cool. Not crowded and stinky like Coney Island and closer than Long Beach. Huge recycle bins you can lock your kid in and a prison-style concrete picnic yard.

Grabbed another beer on the way back to the train at the divier Rockaway Beach Inn. The bartender there said Rockaway Tacos are “out of this world.” I started to regret not trying them.

Everyone was really nice in Rockaway …at both bars. Even the lady wearing double denim (jeans and jacket) with the black eye. I can’t wait to come back.

La Norteña Tacos in Greenpoint

After walking out of Manhattan Inn, I was like whoa, Calexico is packed. Ben says it’s like that all the time. So he took me down the block to La Norteña. No one in there. We got carnitas pork, steak and spicy beef tacos. Complimentary chips and salsa in a little piggy bowl. The tacos were good and cheap. Why no one in there? Gringos scared to be gringos? You would think the takeout menu with the picture of the cowgirl & horse would be enough bring in the hipsters. They had me at the horse.

Oh yeah, check out Ben’s new seafood series, Hook Line & Dinner. It premieres June 7th on the Cooking Channel. That shit’s gonna blow up.

Brooklyn Taco Company

Went to Brokelyn‘s Spring Gala party last week at Public Assembly. Brooklyn Taco Company set up shop there. I was a little skeptical because it was $4 for one taco and who are these young non-Mexican’s making tacos? …But then I saw that brisket meat stewing in the pot. Dang. It was actually pretty good. I should stop being prejudice against non-Mexican taco makers. It’s racist against hipsters.

Check out brooklyntaco.com to see where they’re serving up.

I walked up behind Ryan when they were giving away the 3-day Greenpoint Coworking office space raffle. I told him I was going to win it. A second later, they called my name. I can’t believe I wasted my visualization on winning more work. Maybe I can food blog it.

Really weird thing happened later. I started talking to this girl who won something right after me. She gave me her card later in the night and I Google image searched her. Oh shit. I came up as the first image and I was wearing a fake stache from a year ago. I don’t know what to do. I’m hesitant to email her about it, because I’d be admitting to Internet stalking. But I guess I just did.

Choza Taqueria

One of the first nice days out in a while, Anthony and I got some tacos and a burrito bowl from Choza Taqueria and sat in Madison Square Park. I want to say Choza is like a smaller Chipotle. Similar prices, but taste is more simple and fresh. I think getting the burrito bowl is the way to go. I think you get a lot more food in that bowl than the three tacos. I was stuffed.

I like how they have Cholula brand hot sauce packets. Every place should have hot sauce packets, but not like Taco Bell packets.

It was a beautiful lunch day in the park. I made eye contact with a really hot girl from afar while eating my burrito bowl. She ended up sitting right behind us on the statue steps. Her legs were pretty much in my Horchata …which was very cinnamon-y. I didn’t know what to do, so I talked loudly to Anthony about Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville Bar & Grill in Orlando. I said they should serve a buffet in there. I wish she laughed.

Tacos Morelos Food Cart

Dang. Good taco cart in the East Village across from Bar 2A. Went to two birthday parties there this week. A good opportunity to get a taco.

The cook told me the Barbacoa goat taco was the one to get. I liked it. $2.50. Tender shredded meat. Juices dripping all over my fingers.

Also tried a Tlacoyas. Never heard of this before. Looks like a vegetarian Huarache with beans, sour cream, onions and red & green spicy sauce $2.50. Not bad. I think some of that Barbacoa on it would make it even better. But maybe that makes it a Huarache?
