Taking a break from the West Coast bloggin, here’s blood sausage from George’s Spanish & American restaurant in Bushwick near the Flushing JMZ stop. I kept seeing it at a lot of the Latino restaurants and counters down there and was curious. Only $1.50 for a half link (around three inches). Inspecting the innards of the casing, I see grounded dark blood-cooked meat mixed with rice. It was very rich, salty and quite difficult to describe. I suppose it’s what you’d expect if you’re imagining what blood sausage taste like. I only ate two bites before giving in. It would be more ingestible if mixed with a big bowl of fried rice …a big giant bowl with a ton of rice.

Right next to Mission District BART station where a lot of strung-out homeless hang, I came across Western Restaurant selling Donuts, Smoothies, Ice Cream and Chinese food. Super cheap at $1 per Chinese item over rice. There wasn’t much left at late afternoon. Pretty much scrapings. The Chinese owners seemed pretty happy to help me choose. I got the stewed fatty pork with daikon over rice in a small take out box for only a buck. Plenty of food for a small meal.
As I walked out, a strung out man with his face peeling off walks right into me with his cup of ice and drops it. Then he starts yelling at me and tells me I owe him a dollar. I didn’t know what to do, mostly because I felt bad for the owners having ice all over their floor so I just stood there looking at the guy. As the guy continued to swear at me and try to scam me out of a dollar for his free ice, the old Chinese owner waves at me to get out of there and don’t bother–he’d take care of him. It’s funny that I was about to fight over ice.
I suppose I was a huge target walking in with my Entourage/Miami night club blazer and skinny jeans. They probably thought I was a Jonas bros.

Tonga Room
Pavan took me up a super steep hill to enjoy some tiki drinks at the Tonga room at the Fairmont hotel. They had a pond in the middle of the room with a boat that occasionally rained. The drinks were strong.

Getting a craving for that tomato/ketchup based sauce and beef flank steak that my dad used to make for me over lo-mein noodles, I tried my luck at Lin’s Chinese next to Madison Square Park. I was hoping for some red sauce, but it was brown. Not bad, but not what I was hoping for. So much sauce leaking all over my bag, I had to finish it all because I didn’t want to clean it up to save for leftovers. I’m not sure if that’s a bad thing.

BB Sandwich Bar
So this shop is telling me that they have the world’s best cheese steak period. Bold claim for a NY Cheese Steak. I got one and the sandwich is good. I don’t know if I would consider it a cheese steak, but still tasty and sweet. The shop doubles as a cupcake shop, which look pretty good. They should have a cheese steak & cupcake combo, if they don’t already. Maybe a weird meal combination, but why not since they are the same store front. I think you get a discount if you say you are a student. Thank you cashier for thinking I’m so young. And thank you all bodegas who keep carding me for buying lotto tickets.

Jennifer Cafe’s Roast Pork
Little lunch stand in the East Village serving latino food and empanadas. I wanted to revisit the roast pork lunch platter that I’ve had years back. I remembered it was really good. This time, the pork had a funny aroma …like a horse? But actually, I think this is what it smelled like when I made my last pernil pork shoulder. The stand now uses styrofoam containers rather than the round aluminum platters I remembered. It now reminds me of halal cart with latino roast pork instead of gyro meat. I want to try their empanadas.

La Isla Cuchifritos’ Pig Ear
On my quest to finally try pig ear, I walked down Ave of Puerto Rico (Graham Ave) with Bonnie. We found this small bustling counter serving fried things in the window along with other Latin dishes like roast pork, chicken, rice & beans. On the menu, there was oreja (pig ear), lengua (pork tongue), cuajo (pork stomach) all for a $1 each! After a bit of confusion ordering from the guy, he finally figured I really wanted an ear after I wiggled my lobe. He giggled. It was under the “Chuchifritos” menu, so I assumed it would be fried. Instead he pulled out what looked like a boiled ear and chopped it up on the counter, put it in a cup and added some sauce from one of the stews. Wow it is basically cartilage and thick rubbery ear skin. I almost spit it out. Instead, I tried one more bite before I threw it out. I do want to go back and try the tongue. Only $1. A real bargain!

Anna Maria Pizza
Anna Maria’s, the pizza spot right off the Bedford stop. Yeah, the place full of “hipsters.” You’re a hipster. I’m a hipster. Who gives a shit. Jody got a slice with arugula and mozzarella globs. I took a bite and it was amazing. Look how pillowy that mozzarella is! I’m looking forward to being around that area again. The regular cheese slice is pretty tight too.
