Indonesian Spicy Fried Cow’s Lung

Dear Rusty and Bonnie,
Mar (our upstairs neighbor) is going to drop off a bag of Indonesian Spicy Fried Cow’s Lung in front of our door. Please put it in the fridge.

I was expecting it to look like fried battered popcorn chicken. It turned out to be more of a dried snack …like beef jerky, but livery tasting. I liked it. The seasoning on it was nice.

Mar also threw in a bag of Spicy Cassava Chips …tasted like sweet glazed dried plantain chips, but super spicy. These were awesome!

She says these came from Indonesia and you probably can’t find the Fried Cow’s Lung here, but maybe the Cassava Chips.

SCRATCHbread Sandwich @ Guided By Voices Northside Festival 2011

No re-entry at the Guided By Voices show yesterday at McCarren Park. So we’re stuck with Heinekens, Fred water, vegan Empanadas, Asia Dog, Cemitas and SCRATCHbread. Not so bad. Although Fred water looks like a bottle of hand sanitizer. I’m sure it’s fine. It probably taste like clean water.

I went with a Bacon, Grape & Goat Cheese sandwich ($5) from SCRATCHbread. Probably the best deal there in my opinion. I really enjoyed it. Crunchy bits of roast pork and skin. Greasy as hell, but I think that was the bread that was making my fingers oily.

The show was amazing. I enjoyed spacing out in the outdoor lot-turned-venue. A beautiful day. Surfer Blood got a lot of applause. But then the weirdest thing. I couldn’t hear anyone clap for Wavves after each of their songs. It was like the Twilight Zone. Maybe it’s where I was standing, but I would look around after each song and everyone was just standing still. So strange. I wondered if I was high from that bacon sandwich.

Guided By Voices was awesome. They reminded me that it’s never too old to rock. They have the luckiest roadie, who stands in the back on stage –smoking, drinking, dancing and singing all the lyrics. Four encores and there were still a few songs I wished they played.

A great day all in all. Pee’d in the park next to cops, gnawed on t-bone and rib bones at Rocco’s, then went to a magazine party where entrance fee was $5 or I show them my dick. I didn’t get into that party. I spent all my cash on Heinekens.

De Hot Pot’s Bake & Shark and Doubles

Yasmin joined me for a Caribbean food adventure this past weekend in Lefferts Gardens/Prospect Heights. The B43 bus dropped us off near De Hot Pot …and holy mang! I’m glad they did. Festive music blaring out the store. A lady walking by on the sidewalk started dancing.

The Doubles (small flat sandwich filled with chickpeas). Sounds boring, but whatever sauces the guy put on it was amazing. A small little packet full of flavor. I think it was only a dollar.

We also got a Bake and Shark sandwich ($5). I’ve heard of these. But I wasn’t sure if it was real shark or just fish. The guy confirmed it was shark. Dang. Fried shark pieces in a Coco bread sandwich. Tasted good. Maybe too much bread. Needs more awesome sauce. I picked up a bite on the tray that I thought fell out of the sandwich and put it my mouth. It turned out to be a piece of cartilage Yasmin spit out.  I didn’t finish eating that piece.

The rotis the guy was making was huge. Like the size of two big burritos. As we left, an old man came dancing in. De Hot Pot!

De Hot Pot – 1127 Washington Ave (between Lefferts Ave & Lincoln Rd) Brooklyn, NY 11225

This is what happened to Yasmin after doubling down (via Fat Booth phone app). If you order double doubles, how many will they give you? More Caribbean adventure to come. Stay tuned.

Kang Suh Korean Restaurant

My sister’s flight was canceled because of the snow. So we went out for Korean food. Pan Jeong (scallion pancake $15.95) and Samgae Tang (stewed baby chicken with ginseng $20.99). Wikipedia says, “Samgyetang is traditionally served in the summer for its supposed nutrients, which replaces those lost through excessive sweating and physical exertion during the hot summers in Korea.” It didn’t taste like anything until I added salt. Then it was pretty good. But I wonder if I would like eating salty warm water?

Best Things I Ate in 2010

I just looked back at my 2010 posts. I can’t believe all the shit I ate. Here are some of the best.

Best Lunch Sandwich: Johny’s Melissa Munchie. All sandwiches should have onion rings and/or french fries stuffed in it.

Best Fried Chicken: There was a lot of new fried chicken this year (Hill Country Chicken, the new Pies N Thighs). All super good, but the Commodore edges them out just a bit for their super flaky skin and honey butter/hot sauce to dip with. Also they have the Hot Fish Sandwich you can eat on the side.

Best Food Cart: Veronica’s Kitchen in the Financial District. If only this cart was in my work-hood. The best and spiciest Jerk Chicken and Goat Roti. The hot sauce on the side is awesome.

Best Mexican: Plaza Mexico Dona Zita’s Pork Torta Sandwich at Coney Island’s Midway. This thing is so big and topped with tender roast pork pernil, avocados, and Oaxaca Cheese. Now I’m not sure if this place still exists or it’s fate (with all the Coney Island drama these past years.) Here’s hoping for another summer Torta.

Honorable Mention: Zaragoza Deli Tacos. Tongue Tacos!

Best Punjabi Food: Punjabi Deli. Cheap, quick, opens late!

Best Seafood: I loved the boiled crawfish at Franky & Johnny’s, but these Charbroiled Oysters at Drago’s are some next level shit. Tastes like a good steak. There’s so much awesome food in New Orleans. The Popeye’s is really good there.

Best Burger: Heartland Brewery’s HB Burger. So juicy and flavorful. Matt likes his meat raw and they made it just right.

Best Deal: Wah Fung No. 1 Fast Food’s Roast pork over Rice. Only $2.50 for this mound round of rebound.

Honorable Mention: 2 Bros Pizza Plus’ $2 Jerk Chicken (leg+thigh) and $1 pizzas …I ate so many Jerk Chicken and Veggie Rice lunches ($3) this year.

Best Offal: Cheng Du Tian Fu’s Beef Tripe with Hot Pepper Sauce in the Flushing Golden Mall Food Stalls. I never imagined tripe could taste so good. It was a much different experience from the one I had from the Grand & Bowery Chinese cart.

Best Buffet: DhaBa’s Indian Lunch Buffet. Great meat and veggie selection and definitely one of the better tasting spots in Curry Hill.

Best Pizza: Best Pizza’s Grandma Slice. Yes. The best pizza is served at a place called Best Pizza. I did have Di Fara’s only a few days before this. Sure, Di Fara’s has the best traditional Brooklyn slice.  But Best Pizza takes slices to the 21st century.

Best Ramen & Friends Dinner: Taste Good Malaysian Cuisine in Elmhurst, Queens. Thank you Yoshie for taking us here.

Best Homemade Cooking: Rusty’s Turkey Bacon Turtle Burger! More for show than taste.

Best Chinese: Lan Zhou’s Pork Bone Handpulled Noodle Soup. The guy hand-pulls your noodles out in the open. Dinner and a show.

Best Drunk Food: Carmine’s Philly Cheesesteak Pizza. Makes you feel as bad as waking up to a bunch of White Castle boxes next to your bed.

Best Vegetarian: Meskerem’s Ethiopian Vegetarian Combo. So good, you won’t notice there’s no meat.

Honorable Mention: 4 Course Vegan Underground Brooklyn Dinner. I really liked how spicy the food was.

Best New Restaurant: M. Wells in Long Island City, Queens. A lot of eccentric food made fancy in an old-style diner. Sweatbreads Sandwich and Escargots & Bone Marrow. Yes, please.

Best Overall Thing I Ate: Grand Bo Ky’s Beef Belly Noodle Soup. Booyah!

Thank you for reading my food blog. Let’s do more next year!

Australian Meat Pies from Tuck Shop

These pics are from a while back when Australia’s Darren Hanlon crashed on our couch. To show us his gratitude, he hosted Australian Night. Darren picked up some meat pies & sausage rolls (from Tuck Shop), Aussie beer (Coopers Pale Ale) and we watched one of his old favorites Wake in Fright with friends. Ketchup & minced meat, beer and a creepy Outback movie –made for a good Australian Night!

Lunch with Australian Singer Song-Writer Darren Hanlon

Today, I went out to lunch with our house guest, vegetarian and Australian folk singer song-writer, Darren Hanlon. I wanted to take him to the Dosa Guy in Washington Square Park, but we couldn’t find him. Instead I remembered one of the best vegetarian and best overall meals I’ve had was right around the corner at Meskerem’s Ethiopian Restaurant. The Vegetarian Combo at only $8.50. We got an order for two and got stuffed. This meal makes me remember that I don’t always need to order meat to enjoy myself. My favs were the brown ones. Darren’s fav was green string bean one …but all so good.
