Jasper and his team painted some awesome photo-realistic billboard copies of some of Dennis Hopper’s iconic photographs, now showing at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery. I was walking around exhibition trying to find their paintings, but forgot they did photo-realistic and were right in my face. It’s that good.
There were some major stars at the opening reception. Bonnie and I had a shared experience with Matt Dillon and his girl trying to get there. We all kept walking back and forth together across the street around the construction to try to get to the gallery. I wonder if he thought we were following him. He had a disturbed look when I ended up opening the door for him. Other sightings were Salman Rushdie, Stephen Dorff and Sean Penn. A friend and I were trying to find the hot girl with Sean Penn. I’m not sure what our intention was if we found her, but I wanted to tap her on the shoulder and tell her that my friend likes her. I guess the other would have to distract Sean Penn. Salmon Rushdie had a hot girl with him too.
Then while Jasper and (photos courtesy of) Shonali went to the after party dinner, Marcellus and I had our own at Ramen Setagaya on St. Marks. This Setagaya has a slightly different menu than the one a few blocks away, with a few more appetizers and the option for a set menu combination (ramen + gyoza dumplings or buta-don pork & rice bowl or curry rice) for only a few dollars more. I chose one of the Tsuke-men (dipping noodles with stronger broth) ramens with the buta-don ($14). I would have been content with just the pork & rice bowl if I knew how much food I was getting. I should have thought twice about eating a bowl of rice and then a bowl of ramen. Stuffed on anti-Atkins.
