Big Sausage Roll @ Cafe Minutka

Well I don’t know if this place is really called Cafe Minutka, because of all the Russian letters. But that’s what it says when I Google the address. This was in Brighton Beach after our lunch at Elza Fancy Food …right next to the train stop.

They had a sidewalk sale where I bought this big sausage roll for $2. I didn’t realize there was a big sausage in there, I thought it was part of the braided bread.

Took it back to the city to eat while watching Tebow. It was like a smoked kielbasa wrapped in a buttery croissant roll. Pretty good. Really filling. Big sausage.

Brighton Beach is pretty cool.  Their liquor stores have bottles shaped like rifles, stallions and veggie penises. They also have their own Best Buy.

Rocio’s Spanish Bakery

My first time inside Rocio’s Bakery on Grand. This is the same place that I saw this poor Dora the Explorer cake in the window. There were a lot of flies inside, but they got an A rating, so what do I know.

I ordered the Bistec a la Mexicana ($7.50) and a tamale. The steak and rice platter had avocado, refried beans, peppers and onions and came with tortillas. It was surprisingly tasty, especially with their green hot sauce. So much food. It was like the equivalent of 8 tacos. I should have quit half way. I came home and passed out for the rest of the day.

Chinese Baked Goods Adventure

Yasmin was trying to find this white Chinese steamed spongy rice cake (Pak Tong Koh). I pointed at the outdoor corner markets underneath the Manhattan Bridge on East Broadway, but she said she already tried there. So we walked around to find it.

We passed by Golden Bowl seeing if it was in the window. No luck, but I did see these scallion doughnut rings. The lady at Golden Bowl tried to get me in, but instead I walked over next door to Yi Mei Gourmet and got it. Why? There was one person in line and none in the other. Cheap. Three for $1. It was fried crispy scallion-filled dough. I thought it had sort of a fishy or seafood aroma to it. It left my fingers very oily.

We went into several bakeries. None of them had the steamed rice cake, but I did get a craving for mooncake after I saw so many. So we went back to the first bakery that had the cheapest ones, Golden Fung Wong on Mott. The Lotus Paste mooncake with Two Yolks was $2.25 I believe. I told Yasmin that the yolk is good luck, so having two yolks is double. I thought I made that up, but it turns out it’s true.

We were stuffed and parted ways. I headed back to the train and walked by one of the outdoor corner markets underneath the Manhattan Bridge (South East corner of East Broadway and Division), where I saw what we were looking for this whole time. A bag of the Pak Tong Koh steamed cake for $1. It must’ve been the mooncake yolk luck. The cake had a tad of sweetness and yeast flavor, but mostly bland. Airy, spongy and felt like fake boobs. Extra lucky.

Bakery Rzeszowska’s Cheese Babka

I picked up this Cheese Babka ($4.50) from the Polish bakery across the street from Jody & Christa’s BBQ. I actually didn’t know what it was, other than it looked pretty awesome. I wish there was more cheese to bread ratio …like a McDonald’s cheese danish in it’s own styrofoam container. What happened to those?

Bakery Rzeszowska – 948 Manhattan Ave (btwn India & Java St) Greenpoint, Brooklyn 11222

Lesson learned this night that veggie dogs don’t do well on the grill. A lesson I revisited the next night when I was in charge of the grill. Christa made some nice sugar-rimmed Snoop Doggs (aka Gin & Juice). Bring on the Summer!

Jess Bakery Menu

This Jess Bakery menu was on my desk and in the corner of my eye, I noticed something familiar. The photo of the storefront was crooked. I had a gut feeling about it. I looked it up and I was right. It’s my photo! I just had a Malcolm Gladwell “Blink” moment.

Whatever happened to my slanty shooting style?

Tedone Latticini’s Fresh Mozarella & Prosciutto

Decided to finally hit the old Italian mozzarella and meat shop on Metropolitan while its still around. It’s like how that older man, I met in my first food blog post, told me to go see Les Paul before it’s too late. Sadly I never got to see him perform …fortunately I learned my lesson. The famous 90 year old lady (great NYTimes audio interview/slideshow) was in there just like all the times I would walk by and look through the window. Another man was slicing prosciutto and handing us slices to taste. I asked if I can take a photo and the lady made a joke if her hair was presentable. Well, looks as good as mine. I think I can understand the Mozzarella Lady’s long youthful life. Just like Les Paul, she has a purpose for getting up to make the mozzarella everyday –to bring us happiness. And we depend on her for that.

The two people before me had grabbed bread from across the street at Napoli Bakery and brought them back for them to slice prosciutto and mozzarella directly onto, topped with marinated eggplant. Those costs $9, but looked fantastic, fresh and real Brooklyn Italian. I grabbed my 1/4 lb prosciutto ($4) and ball of the hand-made fresh mozzarella ($6) and went across the street to grab some bread at Napoli ($0.60) to make my own sandwich. Plenty of mozzarella left over, but not for long.

Speaking of Italian food shops on Metropolitan …we walked by our beloved Mario & Sons Meat Market, where they had a sign “We have Baby Lambs, Baby Goats & Rabbits for Easter.” Rusty thought they were actually live animals that you’d give your kids as pets for Easter. I had to remind him that it’s a meat market. I felt like I killed the Easter Bunny telling him that.
