Bierleichen Heavy Metal German Beer Hall

There’s a new Heavy Metal German Beer Hall in Ridgewood, Queens. Nice place. They have big giant beers, including a big boot shaped mug, and sausages and pretzels. There was a guy there that looked like Brendan Fraser in Airheads. It was fitting.

Croxley’s Abbey’s 10cent Wings

I’ve always been intrigued at places with cheap wing nights, because wings can be pretty expensive at around $1+ at most places. I know that Croxley’s in the East Village has always had them, but I figured it was probably always packed. So they just opened up a Croxley’s in Williamsburg and they also have the 10cent wings (boneless) and 20cent classic wings (with bones). The deal is during Sunday all day & night, Saturdays 12-5pm, Mon-Thurs 4pm-1am. So pretty much almost all the time. Plus they are doing it during all the March Madness games. Sweet!

05 Twenty Cent Wings - Croxley's Abbey

I was thinking of getting some boneless and classic, but at 10 wing minimum per order (read the ordering rules below in the pics), I knew I couldn’t finish. So I went with ten 20cent classic with bones. They have lots of flavors. I asked the waitress what the “Fighting Irish” was. She told me not to get it. “It is gross.” I’ll trust her and just get the regular classic like a real man. They came out quick and were really crispy. Reminded me of how Korean wings are really crispy. Great deal!

I’m pretty excited about this new sports bar in Williamsburg. It’s huge. Easy to get a table during some pretty big games. Good attentive service. Great deal on wings!

Ben Sargent (aka Doctor Klaw) met up with me there for a drink. He had this really awesome red Cushman truckster parked out front.

Battery Harris

We went out to hang out at Battery Harris. I forget the occasion. Anyway, this place used to be the Williamsburg Loreley. They kept the same cool outdoor patio.

Instead of German fare, they had Caribbean food. Interesting for the location. Got some Jerked Chicken, Coconut Cornbread, Braised Kale, Burgers, Catfish Sandwich, Rum Raisin Pudding.

It was fun. Not sure I think of it as a Caribbean restaurant though. It’s a cool outdoor bar.

Bait & Hook’s 25 cent Wing Deal

Bait and Tackle Wings

Suzy and Conner were in town and we went out for drinks after work. I was hungry and I saw a sign for 25 cent wings at Bait & Tackle on 14th St and 2nd Ave. Sounds like a really good deal. Turns out they will be having 25 cent wings during the first half of all NFL games. 50 cent in the 2nd half.

We were even there right when happy hour was ending and 25 cent wings were beginning. Bartender let us do both. Cool!

And it’s a pretty nice bar with big TVs to watch football and opened windowed walls …great for a nice New York day. Even if that means sirens going by occasionally and honking cars, it’s nice.

Another note: I had been eating wings for 4 days in a row. Guess what my fingers smell like.

Eastwood’s Israeli Scotch Egg

Last week, I was at Eastwood to drink for Sarah’s bday. They had a pickup/ordering window in the bar. I got the fried fish, which I thought was good.

Then when I was leaving, Sarah’s was urging me to get the Israeli Scotch Egg. A hard boiled wrapped in a falafel with tahini sauce on the side. I took it home. It was interesting. I’m sure it would have been good if I ate it when it was hot. I’m learning all the time.

Limerick House’s Guinness Burger

I walked out of the office during lunch with one of my co-workers. I think we were talking about my shoes. Then I said, “Excuse me, I’m going in here.” He eyes got big. Yeah, I was going into the Irish pub downstairs, The Limerick House. They’ve been advertising a $10 lunch special that includes a beer and also a $12 Guinness Burger.

I was really tempted to get the $10 lunch special, which I could also get a burger with. But this Guinness Burger (Guinness infused cheddar, Irish Bacon, Stout Onions and Fries) $12 sounded temping too. I got that.

It was a decent burger. However I don’t know if I could really taste the beer. Maybe because I was also drinking a Guinness. Maybe that fucked it up. The toppings were dripping in dirty brown sauce, probably the Guinness infused-ness. Pretty good tasty greasy mess. However, I think I wouldn’t have done much worse with a regular burger. So the $10 lunch special with a beer is the way to go. You get a cheap beer with that, FYI.

Looking at that lunch menu again, maybe I’ll try the Traditional Irish Breakfast or the Smoked Irish BLT deal next time.

The Oxford Saloon & Cafe (Missoula, MT)

My buddy Will was showing me some photos from one of his favorite places in Missoula, MT –The Oxford Saloon. It sounded awesome and their J.J.’s Chicken Fried Steak looked great. Somehow he was able to send me these photos and type this all while we were both talking. I don’t know how he did it.

“It’s like drivin 22 hours on a high mountain pass close to runnin outta gas and feeling tha lord ticklin yer hiney cuz you honna eat simethin divine!!! Amazing. Makes me feel like Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.”

The Oxford Saloon Menu

He elaborated further in another email…

“The Oxford Saloon in Missoula has been running since 1883. Missoula was incorporated as a town on a few years before that so its definitely a community fixture. It is part Saloon, All-Night Diner, and Casino where there is live poker played through the night. It used to have a strip club called Mulligans that was in the rear but sadly that went out of business about 10 yrs ago. When it was open it was interesting to say the least, the place was a one-stop shop of vices I guess.

It is known for its brains and eggs, which I heard they can’t serve anymore due to health code, WTF? But its really an awesome place to people watch and take in the vibe of a classic western saloon. There are definitely some rough characters that frequent the place but its worth putting up with them to eat their classic JJ’s Chicken Fried Steak. This is an 8oz chopped sirloin fried and smothered with a unique red eye gravy, accompanied by eggs, texas toast and hashbrowns.”

I like his email subjects for the photos…

“Oh one other thing to note is their world class gun collection that sits over the bar, just in case someone gets a hankerin’!”

Mulholland’s Chicken Wings

Chicken Wings from one of my favorite sports bar in Williamsburg …the only sports bar in Williamsburg?

The sauce on these wings are freakin strong and pungent. Kind of reminds me of KFC’s Buffalo Wings …opening up a box hits my nose like shoving a wad of wasabi up there. I love that!

Mulholland’s buffalo wing sauce is strong and creamy. Maybe too much? Would be great with these wings over white rice.
