Arrogant Swine BBQ

Finally tried the newish barbecue joint in East Williamsburg/Bushwick, Arrogant Swine. I’ve heard mixed reviews about this place from friends, but I thought it was pretty good.

Got the Outside Brown (chunks of Western North Carolina Outside Brown Shoulder $11) and East Carolina Whole Hog (think pulled pork with cracklings on top $12). Both really good with the different BBQ sauces they have.

Their bar has lots of craft beer. The outdoor seating has some nice picnic benches.

Only thing that sucks is that seems far from the train …or at least it’s pretty far out in a very industrial area.

The Shop – Bushwick’s New BBQ Motorcycle Bar

There’s this huge motorcycle garage/bar/Barbecue restaurant/music venue that recently opened up right off the Jefferson L stop in Bushwick, aka Jefftown. I just can’t believe how huge it is. Big American flag behind the stage with a backline. Sports on several TVs. Looks like it’ll be a good spot to watch football when Fall rolls around. Not many places to watch football while eating food in this area.

Even though it’s in soft open right now, I’ve come by a couple of times. First time I had the Bloody Mary with the Rib in it. Looks awesome. Rib was cold though. I guess it has to be, because it would fuck up the Bloody Mary. I came back and got the ribs hot and they are really good. Great rub flavor on the bark. And the pulled pork sandwich was tasty. Really good barbecue for New York. And for barbecue not being existent (previously) in Bushwick, this is awesome.

Now looking at the pics, I see that you’re supposed to pick up your own food at another window. LOL. I think that’s why we ended up eating someone else’s order. There was some confusion. I was drunk, I didn’t realize. The other people ordered well at least.

The Shop is going to open officially during the Bushwick Open Studios (June 5th-7th). That’s an art festival spanning all around the neighborhood in art spaces and even people’s personal apartments.

3 Stacks Smoke & Tap House

Went to Dallas to visit my family for Thanksgiving. Pretty cool city. I posted a lot on Facebook how I couldn’t wait to some Dallas BBQ. I’m not sure my family got my joke. I was making reference to the NYC chain, Dallas BBQ (which has nothing really to do with Dallas, except that they have Texas-sized Margaritas …which I also made a joke about.) So we ended up getting some BBQ in Dallas and also a bucket of Margarita mix while I was there. My Facebook statuses were manifested!

I over-ordered on the phone with 3 Stacks Smoke House. Only because I got confused with the different sizes of sides in particular. It says $3 for the sides a la carte on the menu. So I had already planned out okay, they are small little things and I’ll order 2-3 of each thing. But then they asked me if I wanted a small or large (pint and quart), which I kind of knew a quart was big, but then in my mind, that meant the small or pint is the size of the small sides at KFC or Popeyes. Then I started second guessing myself if pints and quarts were based on volume or weight. Then I figured well, if the pint is $3, let’s just order all quarts. But I don’t think the pints are $3, because it ended up costing a lot more.

Anyway it was pretty good BBQ food. I’ll blog about the bucket of Margarita mix next!

Hometown Bar-B-Que

Had a pretty great meal at Hometown Bar-B-Que in Red Hook for Dan’s birthday. Look how huge this Beef Rib is! Very tender.

05 Big Beef Rib - Hometown Bar-B-Que

The barbecued meats were smoked nicely and of high quality. I think the brisket is the best thing there. Sides and sauces were just okay.

A little out of the way, but a big fun space to party.

Blue Smoke BBQ

Diana and Abel took me out to dinner so we can talk about plans for their wedding next month. I’m going officiate. Apparently, Diana asked me a long time ago, but I had too many sushi boats that night and forgot. Cool, but I thought it was weird they asked me unless they wanted me to do magic tricks in front of a fog machine …which I guess that’s what I will do.

We got the sampler ribs and I like how there are different sauces to try. I remember liking the sides too, but that photo I took of the coleslaw looks really sad.

It’s interesting that I post this now. Because I just read about Abel all over the Internet getting abruptly fired by AOL’s CEO over a conference call to over 1,000 employees. It’s viral. On the upside, the FOX News segment about it is kind of funny.

Pulled Pork Sandwiches

I like going to Ross and Rebecca’s ranch. They make some good pulled pork in their Brooklyn apt. Put it on a Martin potato roll, add some coleslaw and a pickle. Dang. Hope that gives you some ideas this summer.

Tio Wally Eats America: Barbecue Kitchen

I’m happy to have Tio Wally (long-time Me So Hungry reader) aboard to send in his eating adventures from across America. Here he is in College Park, Georgia.

Greetings from College Park, Georgia
N 33° 39.585’ W 84° 26.193’ Elev. 1034 ft.

There’s a framed article on the wall of the Barbecue Kitchen from Georgia Trend magazine with the headline: Frequent Flyers Don’t Have To Starve.

I didn’t read it but perhaps it has to do with the Barbecue Kitchen’s proximity to the College Park MARTA (Moving Americans Rapidly Through Atlanta?) station; MARTA serves Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. It may point out that, if you’re willing to make the 1.25 mile trek from the MARTA station, you can find some really great viddles at a very reasonable price on your way to or from that god forsaken hell, er, airport. But who’s to know? I didn’t read it.

The Barbecue Kitchen is a classic “Meat and three sides” place. But should it be your druthers, you can also choose a meat, two sides and a dessert, as I did. I asked my waitress what she would recommend and went with it: One-Half Smoked Chicken, Squash Casserole, Mashed Rutabagas, and Peach Cobbler ($8.17). Since it was such a classic Southern-style meal, I washed it all down with Sweet Tea.

When I pulled the drumstick off the chicken my first thought was: This isn’t fully cooked. But it was. Had I been smart enough to read the top of the little Specials insert I would have known this. Written right there is “Due to our smoking process our BBQ Pork and Chicken may be red in color but it is fully cooked.”

The chicken was really, really great. The smoky flavor wasn’t overwhelming and the chicken wasn’t too dry. Although it was served with a tangy barbecue sauce, it really didn’t require any extra help to be truly delicious.

The Squash Casserole was also pretty good. It’s sort of like a moist, baked dressing, with just enough Cheddar cheese to be tasted, and cubes of yellow squash.

But the real highlight of the meal was the Mashed Rutabagas. I’ll never understand why you don’t see rutabagas more. They are delightfully, naturally sweet, much like yams; they are even sweeter when baked. Still, you just don’t see them anywhere.

When the guy — once again an ever-reliable (loading) dock worker — told me about Barbecue Kitchen he noted that they’ll bring you as much vegetables as you want for free. Armed with this important bit of knowledge, I had a second bowl of them and found myself yodeling “Rutaba-e-aga, rutaba-e-aga” like Mark Volman (aka Flo) in the Just Another Band From L.A. version of Frank Zappa’s “Call Any Vegetable.”

The Roll and Corn Muffins were also really good, especially with real butter (Not!) and a little honey on them. I don’t know what kind of honey they had in their Honey Bears but it didn’t taste like the standard-issue clover variety. It sure was tasty.

The Peach Cobbler was another real treat. It reminded me of the peach cobbler my Mom used to make. I really liked the textural contrast between the hard, sugary crust, the soft dough beneath and the tender, syrupy peaches. The only thing that could possibly improved it, not that it needed anything, would’ve been if it had been served warm with a few tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk poured on top. Awesome stuff to cap off an awesome meal.

So good was this meal that I didn’t even read my book as I normally do while eating. I was all-consumed consuming the delectable delights and couldn’t take my eyes off the task at hand. Indeed, this was the best $10.35 I’d spent for a meal in a while. And I ate the whole thing!

Another really great thing about the Barbecue Kitchen is its general ambiance. It’s very casual, with great service, and a lot of really cool metal sculptures adorning the walls. Where else are you going to see a bunch of brightly painted metal flying pigs? There is also a really interesting sculpture mounted right above the toilet in the men’s room. (Am I developing a bathroom art fetish?) I kept staring at it thinking it was an insect of some sort. It wasn’t until I was leaving that I saw that it was actually the front view of a motorcycle.

Before the SS Me So Hungry casts off I feel I need to reiterate something: We really love rutabagas. That said, I beseech one and all to make a vow today to do everything humanly possible to support and popularize this sadly neglected root vegetable. The world needs, no, deserves to enjoy more delicious and nutritious rutabagas.

And so we roll.

Daisy May’s BBQ USA’s Texas Style Chili

This one’s from several months back when I took a Skillshare class about Youtube Strategies at the ad offices of Ogilvy & Mather (on the West side). It was cool. I was hoping to see a few Don Drapers.

I was hungry after and Daisy May’s was right across the street. I had ribs from them at a BBQ fest a long time ago and they were pretty good. I thought this place would be a sit-down restaurant, but it’s a counter and then a dining room.

I got one of the cheapest things – “Bowl O’ Red” Texas Style Chili ($10.50). It looks small, but it’s all meat –12 ounces of meat and some gravy. The first few bites were great. Tender beef chunks. But after a while, it’s just too much meat and the chili gravy gets too salty. It comes with a tortilla, onions, cheese and sour cream.

This day was sort of memorable since it marked when I really got interested in learning again and bettering myself. Since then, I’ve taken acting and improv classes and just today I signed up for a class on Body Language. Pretty good deal too. $29 on LivingSocial. I can’t wait to find out who the fuck’s been lying to me.
