Peaches HotHouse

I ended up in Bed-Stuy this past weekend. Good time to try Peaches HotHouse. I want spicy Hot Chicken!

There was a wait for this popular place. And because it was Easter, I guess there was a less of a wait. Overhearing other people, it seems there’s always a much longer line.

Then when the host called out for a girl for one seating, there was a dick that said, “Oh, that’s sad. For one?” I guess he didn’t realize I was also there by myself. His female friends said, “What’s wrong with that?” To which he replied, “Nothing, unless your whole family died in a plane crash.” I wonder if he always needs someone to go out with him when he eats or hold his hand when he goes pee pee.

The Hot Chicken was good.

Ali’s Trinidad Roti Shop

I took the bus down to Bed-Stuy looking for some Caribbean food. I went to Ali’s Trinidad Roti Shop and got a Doubles (fried flat bread filled with curried chickpeas $1.25), Salmon Pie ($1.50) and Irish Sea Moss drink ($4).

06 Doubles and Salmon Pie - Ali's Trinidad Roti Shop

The Doubles was good, but not as good as De Hot Pot, where they put some other sauces on it (I think).

The Salmon Pie was interesting. I don’t know what I was expecting. But it was like fried dough with a pocket of salmon filling.

The Irish Sea Moss drink was really good, although I didn’t expect it to taste like a vanilla milkshake. It’s supposedly good for sexual virility and for making babies. Then I realized, why am I drinking this? I don’t want to make babies right now.

I was thinking of walking around and getting a roti somewhere else, but I was already full. That’s the problem with going on a food adventure by yourself. You buy like an empanada and then you’re full. I think I need a girlfriend …to help me eat food and to make babies with.

Brisket Lab @ Bobby Redd’s Church & NCAA Football 13 Review

Okay, dang. It took me a long time to get to write this post. NYC is takes a toll on my time and body. I’m too tired to party from all the partying.

We went to Dan Delaney’s Brisket Lab at Bobby Redd’s Church in Bed-Stuy/Bushwick this past Tuesday. The old former-church is rad –converted to an art space. I’m impressed that all the stained glass windows are still perfectly intact. There was a beer tap in the confession booth. Rusty kept making Sandusky jokes.

The brisket was good. I asked for the fatty cut and it was delicious. A half pound of meat is quite a lot though. I read somewhere you should really eat 1/4 lbs of meat per serving. So we were all stuffed by the end.

Brother’s Green of Youtube’s Hungry channel make the side salad. Tall Six Points cans for $2. The Grand Street Stompers band was really good. I see them perform at Harefield Road sometimes. This was a really fun event. I have 3 more events to go to to collect all the meat I pre-purchased. I’m going to be meated out by the end of this summer.

All the brisket (2,500+ pounds) are sold out, but check http://delaneybbq.com/brisketlab for future events.

I had some other things to bring home that night after I was done partying at BrisketLab. I just got a Frogg Togg Chilly Pad towel to keep me cool this summer. You just wet it and it cools you down. Why didn’t anyone tell me about this thing before? Or at least tell me that even a plain wet towel would work too?

Then I played the brand new NCAA 13 for PS3 –preordered at Game Stop for the exclusive Tim Tebow bonus. You can put him on any team you want, but surely EA is going to go to hell for allowing this…

I started my season with Tebow leading the Gators. It was fun, but I kept losing to Texas A&M. This game felt like bullshit. Why weren’t there any Option Run plays called with Tebow? Why did Tebow throw so many interceptions? You look at his college stats and he’s an amazing passer –with passing yards, TDs, completion percentage and QB rating comparable to an Andrew Luck …and Luck didn’t have all those rushing yards and TDs like Tebow nor had to play against SEC defenses. I couldn’t believe I was losing to Texas A&M so badly. It felt like EA made Tebow’s abilities more like how critics see him in the NFL, rather than how he truly was in college. I felt so jipped.

Tim Tebow Passing Rushing
Season Team GP Rating Att Comp Pct Yds TD INT Sack Att Yds TD
2006 Florida Gators 14 201.7 33 22 66.7 358 5 1 0 89 469 8
2007 Florida Gators 13 172.5 350 234 66.9 3,286 32 6 13 210 895 23
2008 Florida Gators 14 172.4 298 192 64.4 2,747 30 4 15 176 673 12
2009 Florida Gators 14 155.6 304 213 70.1 2,895 21 5 25 217 910 14
Totals 55 170.8 985 661 67.1 9,286 88 15 53 692 2947 57

Now that I am less drunk and pissed off, maybe I was getting beaten so bad because I’m playing with this year’s Florida Gators and Urban Meyer isn’t calling the plays. That’s probably why I sucked. But still… Tebow. They did make him able to scramble well though. Anyway, it’s really not much better than the NCAA game three years ago. They tricked me into buying this for Tebow. I guess it’s still worth it.

Restaurant Abidjan – West African Cuisine

I met up with Justin near Woodhull Hospital (at the corner of East Williamsburg, Bushwick and Bed-Stuy) for brunch –Ventured out to try someplace new. Here’s a scary looking dentists office we passed …for children.

We ended up walking Southeast along the JMZ line. A few taco places that looked interesting to me. We almost walked into a divey dark bar for Eggs Benedict, but took a chance at a few more blocks. Whoa, what is Abidjan? …a West African restaurants with a big photo menu taped to the window. A lot of good looking stuff and cheap. $3 Spaghetti Sandwich? Dang.

I didn’t order the Spaghetti Sandwich. In fact, I’m not sure if everything on that window menu is available all the time. There’s a shorter menu on the table. It looks like rather than getting a single entree, you also have to get a side for a single larger price. But actually, it’s still the same price if they were separate, but now a combo. (See photo #6. I’m not that good at explaining shit.) Still pretty cheap prices.

Our server, who I assume is also the chef, brought us our own gallon jug of water. And from the sign on the window, the water is specially Kangen ionized and alkalized water. Sounds fancy.

Justin and I split the Peanut Sauce (Chicken Stew) with Foutou (mashed Cassava) $10. The sauce was amazing and chicken so tender. The Foutou has the glutinous/doughy consistency of mochi, but instead of rice, it’s made out of cassava. Justin thought it tasted brothy. Dipped in the Peanut Sauce, the Foutou were like dumplings. Interesting.

We also ordered a Fried Fish with Attieke (Cassava Couscous) $10. A nice sized whole fish –crispy and great with the sauce, oil and onions on the side. The Attieke, also made with cassava, was awesome with the Peanut Sauce.  Looking at the menu, I’m not sure if the couscous is an option with the Peanut Sauce. It should be.

Oh, and the homemade Ginger Juice that the guy makes and bottles himself is amazing. Strong with ginger flavor. Only $2. I bought an extra to take home.

I can’t believe the tables were empty here. It’s so good and nicely good priced. They even have DVDs for sale. I love this restaurant.

Bed-Stuy Fish Fry

Todd took me to Bed-Stuy Fish Fry. Dang, we were hungry. They were out of my top two choices 1) Fish & Grits and 2) Fish & Waffles. Too bad. Those sounds so good.

We both got Fried Fish Dinners ($10 with 2 sides). The whiting fish dinner is 6 pieces and the catfish is 4. I usually like whiting more, but this time catfish was superior. Both fish were fried nicely. Seasoning was a little bland, but dipping it in the sour cream and the salty hot sauce made it quite tasty.

My black eyed peas had a chunk of ham in it and was good. The mac n cheese and string beans were decent.

Our wait was long and Todd fell asleep, but they do say “The Fish and Shrimp are fresh and cooked to order. So give us 3 mins to catch it, 1 min to shake in the batter, 10 mins to cook it and another minute to serve it!!!! Hot and fresh so you can enjoy the best fish on the planet!!”

Although we were the only white people in there, we didn’t feel out of place. The ladies were quite nice to us. Huge ass container of Kool-Aid!
