The Dubliner

I met up with Shonali on Stone Street in the Financial District. Holy moly! I didn’t realize this street existed –cobblestone street full of outdoor restaurant seating. It looks like a European town that you see in the movies!

There are several restaurants. We chose the Dubliner, an Irish pub… because I thought the Fish and Chips looked really good on someone’s plate. Although, I ended up getting the Guinness and Beef Stew $16. Shonali saved the day and got the Fish and Chips, so we could split both. They were both good.

Stone Street is really cool!

Mahzen Grill

I was walking around for two hours looking for a new place to eat a late lunch last week while I was stuck in Brooklyn because of the storm. Either I was turned away or the places I wanted to try were closed. I started walking back home and saw that Mahzen Grill (a newish Mediterranean restaurant) was open.

It was already 4pm and I missed their lunch window. Whatever. I was starving. I hadn’t eaten all day.

I ordered a beer and the Hunkar Bengendi (Beef stew on a bed of creamy roasted eggplant puree $19). It was good. Tender meat. The Eggplant Puree was like Baba ghanoush. They gave me bread, but it didn’t really help the dish. Although it looks like it needs bread or something, it really doesn’t. Actually warm pita bread might’ve been good.

It’s not often I spend $30 on lunch. But whatever, I was starving. And I’ve been very fortunate after all this Sandy mess. Very fortunate. I can celebrate that at least.

This place gets pretty good Yelp reviews. I saw that they were doing a lot of delivery. It’s weird, because it doesn’t look like a place that would do delivery. Maybe because it looks like an art gallery.

Naranjos Taco Food Truck

There’s a food truck that now parks next to Trader Joe’s on 21st St and 6th Ave in Manhattan. There’s never a line. I feel bad for the guy. I got the beef stew $5. Pretty decent for no line truck.

Be Like Don Draper: Dinty Moore and a Budweiser

In Mad Men Season 4 Episode 08, Don Draper sits in his bachelor apartment opening a can of Dinty Moore Beef Stew and a Budweiser. My roommate Bonnie “awed” in his loneliness …while I on the other hand felt it very manly. Little did Bonnie know that I had microwaved a can of Krasdale baked beans and a hot dog for lunch that very day. Isn’t that how a man on his own would eat? Isn’t that the kind of apartment and life he would keep? I don’t think anyone should feel sorry for Don Draper. Every man at one point wants to be Don Draper. So this is how I came to eat a can of Dinty Moore Beef Stew and drink a Budweiser.

It did explode in the microwave. I always feel like the directions are to keep it in there longer than they should be. I even went 30 seconds less than the minimum.

It’s surprisingly not bad for canned food. My first thought of the beef was it was so tender. Then on second bite, I realized that the meat was just ground meat shaped into a chunk of beef. So sorta like a Chef Boyardee meatball, but worked better with the gravy. Meat and Potatoes and a Bud. That’s a man meal.

I was a little worried how the bottom of the can was stained with the stew after numerous rinses.

UPDATE: I might be delirious (because I’m at home sick), but I’ve been smelling Dinty Moore Beef Stew for the past half hour. I ate this two days ago. I really smell it right now and no one else is home.

UPDATE 2: I think my arm pits smell like Dinty Moore Beef Stew. I’m pretty sure I don’t have a fever.
