Harefield Road’s Brunch

It’s strange that it’s taken me years to eat brunch at Harefield Road. I come here all the time and it’s one of the closest places for brunch.

I remember one time I watched Marcellus eat brunch. He had just turned Vegetarian a week before and didn’t know what Chorizo was when he ordered the Breakfast Burrito. I think he might have eaten it anyway.

Well this time I made it there for brunch myself. It’s a pretty good deal. $12 for entree, coffee or tea, and choice of Bloody Mary or Mimosa. I like their Bloody Mary’s. I had the Harefield Eggs (Eggs Benedict with Salmon instead Canadian Bacon). Poached eggs nicely cooked. Todd’s Huevos Rancheros looked good.

A good deal. I can see why they’re always packed for brunch.

Gwynnett St. Brunch

Todd and I met up at Gwynnett St. for brunch. For years, this location had previously been several rotating Italian restaurants that never stayed open for long. Never really busy, except for the occasional suspiciously large family I’d see strolling out. It made me think those restaurants were mob fronts. Gwynnett St. looks exactly like the restaurants before. I didn’t even notice that it was a new place …so it was surprising to hear from friends that this place is really good.

We started off with the Whiskey Bread with cultured butter and apricot. Dang, this bread is really good. It’s dense and reminds me of a homemade beer type of bread. Great slathered with the cultured butter.

I didn’t know what a Kir Royale was, so I ordered it. It’s like a sweet/tangy mimosa.

Todd and I split the Pork Shoulder Steak and the Oxtail & Onion Marmalade ($16 each). The latter was like toast with meat spread. Both pretty good and more fancy of a brunch than I’m used to. It’s nice to treat myself now and then.

Looks like brunch is only on Sundays. Take note of their open hours. I came by on Day Lights Saving Day and was confused because I couldn’t tell if it was 3 or 4pm. Unfortunately, they were closing when I came in, but sincerely helpful in helping me figure out what time it was. That’s where I walked for another hour and finally ate Barzola’s Fish and Shrimp Casserole.

Rosarito Fish Shack’s Brunch

I was at Smorgasburg (Food Flea Market) this past Saturday and really couldn’t decide what to eat …plus the lines and crowds were too much for me. So I went back to Rosarito Fish Shack that I saw on my way there to the waterfront. It’s right where Williamsburg Cafe used to be. I loved that placed years ago. But now Rosarito Fish Shack is there and it stands out like a fake Disney-esque touristy restaurant. I think that looks cool.

I ordered a Bloody Mary with tequila, which I don’t think is as good as with vodka. But it does the job.

I had the Chilaquiles con Camarones (Crispy tortillas, tomato-chile de arbol salsa, garlic shrimps, two fried eggs, queso, crema $12). This plate was big. The shrimp were frickin’ huge. I tend to describe Chilaquiles as plate of soggy nachos, but these were the best soggy nachos I’ve ever had. There were still plenty of crispy and crunch to it. By far, better Chilaquiles than from Grand Morelos.

I just read the Yelp reviews for this place and it’s funny how many people hate Rosarito. I had an excellent brunch with excellent service. The plates next to me all looked awesome, with the exception of the crab cake sandwiches. I had a nice and easy experience. A lot less hectic than Smorgasburg down the street, which I did go back to meet up with my friend (I’ll post more on that soon).

Marlow & Sons Brunch

I met Todd and Elisa this past Saturday at Diner in Williamsburg. The place was packed and there was an hour wait. We got on the list, but went next door to Marlow & Sons for a quick and easy table. We ran into Todd’s old friend Sean who lives in Tokyo. Someone he used to hang out with everyday in college, but hadn’t seen in years. It’s funny how NYC is such a small world.

We couldn’t decide what to get. Everything sounded pretty damn good on the menu, but I just wished I knew what they looked like. Sometimes I think all restaurants should be like Denny’s with pictures on the menu.

Todd got the Fried Chicken, Elisa got the Pork Rillons and I got the Beef Stew. Everything was good, although different than what I expected. Things were smaller and fancier. The beef stew for instance was not thick with gravy, but clean and liquidy.

There was one thing I saw people getting that looked big. I think it was the grilled cheese. That looked good because it was big.

It was weird. Our food looked small, but we were stuffed.

I wasn’t sure if we needed to go back to Diner to tell them we already ate.

Late Night Sandwich @ Mulholland’s

Had to see my boy Tebow start for the Broncos at my favorite Williamsburg sports bar …or possibly the only real sports bar in Williamsburg. It was packed. I didn’t know kids in Williamsburg cared about sports.

I got the Late Night Sandwich (2 SUNNY SIDE UP EGGS ON COUNTRY STYLE WHITE BREAD WITH MONTERAY JACK CHEESE, BACON, LETTUCE, TOMATO AND MAYO). Dang this was tasty mess of a sandwich. I got egg drippings all over the floor. Then mopped it up with $10 Bud Light pitchers.

What a game. What a sandwich. It truly is Tebow Time!

Clary’s (Savannah, Georgia)

I’ve posted snippets from the road, but now I’m ready to share our full-on adventures and photos from our Shonali Bhowmik 100 Oak’s Revival tour down South…

Day 5: We made it through the Savannah party night. Matt, Jill and I went for breakfast/lunch at Clary’s. Freshly made Corned Beef Hash …spiced up so it tasted sorta like summer sausage. On our way out, I stared at the giant eclairs.

The Brooklyn Star – Brunch

Danny and I had brunch at the Brooklyn Star. I’ve always wanted to try this place, but the original location burnt down. Then I forgot the newer place was even closer to me, when it took over the Lazy Catfish spot.

First started off with a Bloody Bull (a bloody mary with beef broth). I like the idea, but to me, it tasted like a regular bloody mary. I couldn’t really taste the beef broth. And we just had a couple of bloody marys at Harefield Road right before.

I ordered the Apple Johnny Cakes ($12) with bacon and jalapeno cooked inside for only an extra 50cents. That’s a good reasonably priced upgrade.

Danny got the Fried Pork Chop ($11) which came with grits, chow chow (a Southern relish) and a fried egg. He asked if they could cook the egg well done, but the waitress said the chef wouldn’t do that. I was pretty stunned. I understand there are stubborn chefs who only do things their way (No Changes, No Substitutions), but I never imagined having an egg on the griddle for an extra 30 seconds would be a big deal. I was about to say fuck this place, but Danny went ahead and ordered it sans egg. And dammit, the Fried Pork Chop was the best fucking thing. Huge. I didn’t know a pork chop could be so big. It looked like a big fried fish filet …even had a tail. It probably would’ve tasted amazing with some runny yolk on it.
