Brunch at Fanny (Brooklyn)

Brunch with Bonnie. We were craving pancakes and sat down at a place we thought would have them. They didn’t and we were sat in awkward corner in the shade on a nice sunny day. That was the first time I’ve ever walked out of a restaurant. So we went up the street to Fanny. My first time there. Bonnie got the Baked eggs over Ratatouille and I got the Fried Fish Sandwich, even thought I really wanted the ratatouille. It’s weird how no two people are allowed order the same thing. I understand why I do that, but why do other people when they don’t share in the first place? I ate both anyway and it was good.

Billy, who we ran into over at the Blue Stove bakery, says Fanny also makes a pretty respectable burger. I should try it. It was funny running into him. I walked into the bakery and stared at the pie he was carrying out and didn’t even realize it was him. That’s what happens when you become a food blogger. It’s like being distracted by boobs, but a cherry pie instead.

Brunch at Diner (Williamsburg, Brooklyn)

The weather’s so nice to walk over to Diner and meet friends for brunch. The Bourbon & Toffee french toast –awesome looking. The omelette was huge. The burger looked nice. The fried chicken sandwich that passed our table looked delicious. Three of us ordered the pork belly because it sounded awesome. It didn’t look as awesome as the other food, but it was pretty good tasting. Came with some tangy applesauce and scrambled eggs with pieces of baguette in it. The bread was mushy extra texture to it. I tried to Photoshop the pork belly. Hopefully it’ll be good enough looking for Tastespotting.

Elote’s Brunch

Rusty and I were walking around Grand & Union for food when we ran into a friend. We said “hi” and then she introduced us to her friend as “weird guys.” Then I started acting even really weird …I’m not sure if intentional. They recommended the Mexican restaurant, Elote, right around the corner. So we went.

From the outside, Elote looks like a real Mexican hangout with the beer special posters on the window. In actuality, it’s very much a hipster joint. $11 brunch special comes with a cocktail. My pulled pork sandwich was pretty good. I enjoyed it. Nice to sit in the sun out back and enjoy some brunch. I can’t wait for the rest of the Spring.

Going back to being weird. I get why she might have said that, but wasn’t that more weird to introduce us as that? It really got to me though. I felt like it destroyed my new mindset of confidence that I’ve been building the past few years. …Then I realize what if I didn’t run into her or didn’t know her –I wouldn’t have felt down on myself at all. So it has nothing to do with me, right? Meaning I shouldn’t make this random encounter my identity.  And what if I just thought it was funny, which I initially thought until I dwelled on it? It was all in my own perception. I decide for myself how I feel and if I want to be weird. And that’s my self-therapy of the day. New self-development/food blog? …Me So Positive

Mesa Coyoacan

I got my newest issue of Time Out and they have ceased to put Mesa Coyoacan in the “New & Approved” section after four or five issues in a row. I’m not sure if I’m the one to blame, but I’d like to think there’s power in food blogging. Now I’m not sure if I should feel good or bad if I did that, but it really was confusing. I kept thinking it was Groundhog’s Day, but that was Tuesday.

So here I am, finally dining at Mesa Coyoacan for brunch. Alyssa got the Chilaquiles with eggs. It was different than the kind at Grand Morelos, which I’m to understand is pretty authentic.  Mesa’s was much less mushy and wasn’t mashed up into the sauce. It was still a tortilla chip –a little soft from the ranchero sauce. It was closer to the kind I had in San Francisco. Bonnie’s Huevos Rancheros tasted like the Chilaquiles, since it was the same ingredients –just in a different form.

My Fish Tacos (tilapia) –three small two-bite sized tacos at $9. Pretty tasty with a squirt of lime. I’m usually in need of hot sauce on my tacos and they did bring out three homemade varieties. I tried all them, but it was best without. The tacos were plenty flavorful in each small bite.

Russ asked me what kind of place this is. I said you’d take your out-of-town guy friends to Grand Morelos. For Mesa Coyoacan, your out-of-town gal friends …or whoever you happen to wake up next to. It’s like the Sea or Planet Thai of Mexican restaurants.

Cafe Nijasol

An unexpected little Bushwick cafe in the middle of the residential block. I got the Monte Cristo sandwich, which instead of being deep fried, it used french toast with syrup on the side. I suppose it’s a little healthier. I wonder if my taste is becoming more refined, because I think it could have used some mayonnaise and maybe a tomato slice.

WNBA Willie Mae Rock Camp Brunch

Mia had a fundraiser WNBA game & brunch on her rooftop for Willie Mae Rock Camp for girls. She made fancy bagged lunches for everyone, along with salmon quiche and prosciutto wrapped wheat sticks. Fancy. There was a shiva (funeral mourning) being held by a different Mia on the 9th floor. So there were a few slipups where the brunch guests ended up at the shiva and the mourners ended up at the brunch. When I was in the bathroom, Mia texted me to bring back the matches from the banister on her foyer. It didn’t help that I didn’t know what a banister was or a foyer …but I did know what matches looked like. So with “shiva” I learned three new words.

I never thought I’d be at a WNBA game. There were a lot of kids there. When the crowd yelled “DE-FENSE!”, it was very very young sounding. Mia joined the Willie Mae Rock Camp crew at half court for a giant check from the NY Liberty. And the food stand had an ad for a hot dog wrapped inside a knish (Coney Combos). They didn’t have any for me. WTF? Food blog fail.

Brunch at Il Passatore

I never thought of having pasta for brunch, but now I know it works. I got a little flip floppy when ordering. Got the gnocchi. Then later decided to make it the pre fixe at $14 with the Bellini. Then almost switched to eggs benedict, but I’m glad I didn’t. You can get that anywhere. Time to get their specialty –Italian pasta. It was delicious. I should go there more often especially since it’s the closest food place, except for the crack store.

Philip Marie’s Brunch – Unlimited Bloody Marys

Yoshie and Ramen & Friends hosts brunch at Philip Marie’s in the West Village. There’s a $16.99 brunch special with unlimited bloody marys. I got the crab cake benedict. Delish even though I’m allergic to shellfish. I pounded down three drinks. Definitely got my money’s worth.

There were a lot of cute girls walkin about in the West Village. I was all thugged out listening to Dre, Snoop and other 90’s MTV pop/gansta rap. I see a cute girl walk by and I give her a nod in my gangsta style. And they laugh.
