McDonald’s Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Sandwich

Fried Chicken Sandwiches have been trending, at least here in New York. So it’s fitting that McDonald’s has come out with their Chicken Sandwich.

I got one late one night. I remember reading reviews and watching a Daym Drop YouTube review of McDonald’s new Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Sandwich and they all said it was over-cooked and had too much mayonnaise. I figured they probably just got a bum sandwich that particular time and I believe you can never have too much mayonnaise. I love mayonnaise. So let me try it.

Unfortunately, my chicken was also way over-cooked and dry …and they did put way too much mayonnaise. Even though I love mayonnaise, this was too much. So maybe that’s how these chicken sandwich just are, unfortunately.

I might just stick to the Egg McMuffins once they start selling them all day and night.

Fuku Spicy Chicken Sandwich

I finally got to try David Chang’s Spicy Fried Chicken Sandwich at Fuku in the East Village.

The line and wait wasn’t that bad around 7pm on a Friday. The line initially looks bad leading out the door, but it’s actually short. The person taking the order is only a few feet from the door. And they are quick. The menu is small (Spicy Chicken Sandwich $8, fries $3, a daily salad, a daily Milk Bar dessert and drinks –one beer choice, Tecate $5). Also they only take credit cards, so it’s quick. Also no gratuity option when you sign.

I got my Chicken Sandwich with pickled daikon ($1 extra). I thought that made it taste better, but possibly made half of my sandwich soggy. Half of it was great, but that soggy half wasn’t so much. The seasoning on the chicken is good.

I didn’t think the Ssam sauce they have in bottles on the counters helped the sandwich. I don’t think it was the right flavor for it. We saw a couple next to us that couldn’t wait to try their sandwich, but they doused it all over with ketchup and the Ssam sauce. They should have tasted it plain first, but I couldn’t say anything in time. They gave a face that didn’t look like they really enjoyed it, but were trying to be polite while inside the restaurant.

It’s a good chicken sandwich. A good deal at $8 for it’s size, particularly for NY prices and coming from such a popular chef. A lot of chicken. They use dark meat, rather than the breast.

I would say it’s more in the vein of Chick-fil-A –Seasoned Fried Chicken with pickles on a bun. Simple assembly. But I’m more of a lettuce and mayo type of chicken sandwich guy though. I’d eat this Fuku Chicken Sandwich again though.

Wendy’s Jalapeño Fresco Spicy Chicken Sandwich is Spicy!

I’ve been a fan of Wendy’s Spicy Chicken sandwich since college. Ate it all the time. It’s a good quality piece of chicken for fast food.

Now I tried their new Jalapeño Fresco Spicy Chicken sandwich (spicy chicken breast topped with fresh, diced jalapeños, ghost pepper sauce, Colby pepper jack cheese all on a red jalapeno bun). I never expect when fast food chains say things are spicy to actually be spicy. Even with words like “Ghost Pepper” in their ingredients, it tends to be very much toned down. But the Jalapeño Fresco Spicy Chicken sandwich is spicy. I was sweating a bit. Probably not as spicy as what I think Ghost Pepper/Bhut Jolokia (the world’s hottest natural-grown chili pepper) should be like, but it is the spiciest food I’ve had from a fast food chain. It’s great!

I don’t know about the bun though. I took one half off when I ate it –open-faced. But that’s only because I’m trying to low-carb. I didn’t realize it was a jalapeno bun when I ate it. I should’ve tasted it by itself to see how spicy it was.

Fritzl’s Palace Fried Chicken Sandwich

Now that I live in Bushwick, I can have one of the best burgers ever at Fritzl’s. However, I chose the “Palace” Fried Chicken Sandwich instead –Homemade chicken patty (brined breast and thigh) with lettuce and mayo on a roll $9. That sounds really good and it was.

I assume it’s modeled after Palace Fried Chicken restaurants that’s around New York. This tasted like a really good Burger King Chicken Sandwich …or a Palace Fried Chicken Sandwich. Instead of a ground/mashed up formed frozen patty, it’s real bits of chicken formed into a crispy hockey puck.

You know what I think makes it taste especially good is the mayo and shredded lettuce. Something about that makes it taste good. I think SNL was right on target when they made this skit about a new fake KFC item called KFC Shredders –a bag of lettuce where you put mayo and then shake.

Then I remember McDonald’s soon followed and made something very similar called Salad Shakers, where you shake up the lettuce and dressing in a sundae cup. Or maybe SNL was making fun of McDonald’s, but I remember the timing was the other way around.

Wendy’s Pretzel Pub Chicken Sandwich

You’ve seen the commercials for the Wendy’s Pretzel Pub Chicken Sandwich, right? It looks good. Or at least interesting. I saw it one late night when I was drunk and immediately emailed the publicist that had just wrote me about it. I said I want it and she said okay. It was that easy. I’ve never asked before. I didn’t know you could do that.

So I got $5 gift card in the mail. Headed over to the Wendy’s on 5th Ave near the Empire State building, but it was so packed. The line was insane. The next day, I went to the one on 14th St near Union Square. No line. I walked right up to the cashier.

Unfortunately, the sandwich alone was about $6 after tax. I guess that’s Manhattan pricing. So I owed a dollar. But it was weird, because I got a bunch of change back from the coin dispenser.

I sat in Union Square and opened it up. Looked good. The pretzel bread was soft and had a crusty bottom. Tasted almost like Chinese bakery bun bread. Not so much like how I imagined a pretzel bun would taste like. But it was a really good sandwich. I like it a lot. Seemed like quality ingredients. Sauce was tasty. A really good chicken sandwich.

I’m already a big of Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich. Had it very often in college. I should try the Pretzel Pub with Spicy Chicken next time.

Burgers, Shakes & Fries (Darien, CT)

We were on our way up to Massachusetts for Diana and Abel’s wedding. I was going to officiate. My first time. We stopped at Burgers, Shakes & Fries in Darien, Connecticut. The running joke in the car was “I wonder what they have there.”

Pretty decent food here. The tator tots had cheese. The chicken sandwiches were good. Although, I don’t understand why Rebecca’s BBQ chicken sandwich (fried chicken strip on a bun) was totally different from my Buffalo Chicken Sandwich (grilled chicken strip on toast). It was under the same “Build Your Own Chicken Sandwich” section. If it was up to me, I’d get it fried on a bun like Rebecca’s. If it was up to her, she’d probably ordered grilled on toast like mine.

So during our meal, I confessed to everyone that I just looked up the other night what a officiant is supposed to do and realized that weddings and marriages were all bullshit. I didn’t get it. I felt like a fraud going into this wedding.

Rebecca told me how when her and Ross got married recently, they took different parts of weddings from different religions. One that was a Jewish thing with a blanket …and somehow that symbolized that a marriage is between two people and a wedding is about the community (your friends and family supporting your bond). Then it clicked. I got it. That makes a lot more sense. For some reason, I thought weddings were a selfish thing. But it really is more about your family and friends witnessing and supporting two people’s bond, promise and vow to each other. I buy that.

When I took the stage the next day, I threw away the script at the last minute and my speech was mostly about our trip to Burgers, Shakes & Fries. How up until then I thought weddings were bullshit, but now I get it. This wedding is for you guys, the family and friends in attendance. Also now I get that even though I can’t understand the idea of a marriage vow for myself, I can understand that Diana and Abel must be strong people to be willing to stick it out with each other till death do us part. The kids liked it when I cursed.

McDonald’s Southern Style Chicken Sandwich

So you know I like the $1 (or so) Hot & Spicy McChicken Sandwich. I decided to finally try the Southern Style Chicken Sandwich. I remember I kind of like Chick-fil-a. And this McDonald’s sandwich is supposed to be a rip-off of it. If you guys don’t know, there’s no real Chick-fil-a in NYC …except for the tiny express store in an NYU food court, but I think you need a student ID to get in. Lame.

Anyway, SeriousEats said the McDonald’s Southern Chicken Sandwich is pretty tasty compared to Chick-fil-a. The last time I had one was last year. But I kind of don’t remember really. So this McDonald’s was alright. I don’t think it was amazing. Decent. But I think I like the Hot & Spicy McChicken more! I know the McChicken is some kind of re-pressed meat, but I think it tastes better. And it’s a better deal. $4.29 vs $1.69 plus tax. Dang, I might get a Hot McChicken tomorrow.

McDonald’s Hot ‘n Spicy McChicken Sandwich

Man, long lines everywhere today. Not just to get Powerball tickets, but for lunch. Maybe everyone is out for lunch today, so they could get Powerball tickets. Dang. I walked everywhere and was so annoyed by the lines.

Somehow I said fuck it and ended up at McDonald’s to try that 99cent Hot ‘n Spicy McChicken sandwich I keep seeing on TV. It looks very similar to the Checker’s 99cent Spicy Chicken Sandwich that I love so dear –that Spicy Chicken Sandwich that I used to ride home from college on my bike and pick up on the way –that sandwich that has a few shreds of lettuce and a decent amount of mayonnaise to cool off that heat –that chicken sandwich that is reminiscent of something you get in the high school cafeteria –that Checker’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich that I missed a flight home from Atlanta for.

Well in Manhattan, McDonald’s Hot & Spicy Chicky isn’t 99cents, but $1.69. Whatever. It was very close to my memory that Checkers’ 99cent Spicy Chicken Sandwich. Dang. I like it. It’s such a cheap little sandwich. Pretty spicy.

Man, that’s the only thing I’ve eaten all day. 380 calories. It’s 10:41pm now and I had that Micky D’s Chicky at lunch. Now I had maybe five whiskeys. I’m too scared to go upstairs.
