SoCo’s Buttermilk Fried Chicken & Red Velvet Waffle

I’m a fan of Chicken and Waffles. I remember the first time I’ve ever heard of Chicken and Waffles, I was in Atlanta as a teenager with my mom and sister in the early 90’s. We kept driving past Gladys Knight’s Chicken & Waffles restaurant. I was like what? So my mom let me out to go in to get an order. It turned out to be an upscale restaurant with mostly an African American clientele. So it probably seemed really weird for a young Asian boy to walk in with shorts and a t-shirt. I bet they thought I was lost.

Anyway, I wanted to try this Fried Chicken and Red Velvet Waffle ($20) that looks so good at SoCo in Clinton Hill. It’s an interesting take, because of the Red Velvet Waffle. Pretty good overall. It works. I guess it’s slightly sweeter than regular waffles. But I’m going to put syrup on it anyway. So it’s going to be sweet.

The Mardi Gras cocktail reminded me of those sweet bottled Looza fruit juices.

White Castle’s Chicken & Waffle Sandwich

Signs just went up today at White Castle for their new Chicken and Waffle slider. Chicken patty between two Belgian waffles with white gravy and bacon crumbles. Two for $5 or $2.69 each.

The also have a breakfast menu with the waffles. Waffle sandwiches with egg and cheese with a choice of bacon or sausage $1.99. Waffles and Mrs. Butterworth’s $1.69.

I ordered one of the Chicken and Waffle sandwiches. I saw the lady carefully assembling it, neatly wrapping it up and sliding it into a slider box.

It was really good! The white gravy and bacon had a good peppery taste. It kind of was like eating chicken and waffles.

I imagine if they used the chicken breast from their tasty Chicken Breast Sandwiches, it would be even better. I wonder if you can special order it that way. It probably wouldn’t fit into the box though.

Sweet Chick – Chicken & Waffles

I tried out Sweet Chick last night after seeing Solange Knowles sing at the Northside Festival/McCarren Park. I sat down at the bar and these two guys started to chat it up with me. I asked if they got the fried chicken and waffles. They didn’t. They were black and I wondered if I sounded racist with my assumption. Then I asked if they also came from the Solange show, which a lot of black folks were at. They didn’t. I was on a roll. Although I was curious why else they were hanging out in Williamsburg.

Anyway, my conversation ended when one of the dudes basically asked one of the bartenders if he was gay, because he liked him I guess. Not that I’m homophobic and didn’t want to talk to them. It just ended because my food came.

I got the Chicken and Waffles ($16) Classic. They also have other versions –Bacon & Cheddar, Rosemary & Mushroom and on the day’s special was General Tso’s Chicken and Waffles.

The Fried Chicken was great. The crust was crunchy and tasted kind of like Chinese Take-Out Fried Wings, which I like. I think the waffles were good, although I wasn’t really thinking about it when I ate it. But I remembered I really liked the whole thing mixed with syrup and the three butters (berry, chive and regular). And $3 cans of Genesee.

I know I’m on a low carb diet, but I guess I decided to wait until the next day to regret it.
