Checkers’ Fully Loaded Fries

After the Ramen and Friends baby shower, I just had to stop by Checkers in Brooklyn Heights to relive my college days riding my bike home with a 99cent Spicy Chicken Sandwich. It isn’t 99cents anymore, at least at this New York location. I suppose it’s understandable, since I’m thinking back 8 years ago in Gainesville, Florida. At $2.69, it’s not as memorable as it was back then or at the Atlanta airport, when we missed our plane because I couldn’t find the Chic-fil-A.

What was memorable was the Fully Loaded Fries. Checkers seasoned fries with cheddar cheese, bacon and ranch dressing. Hot dang. This is one big pile of awesome-mess. I think it ended up tasting like a Wendy’s baked potato with the same fixings. Makes sense.

Free Chick-fil-A Spicy Chicken Sandwich Premiere

From May 31 – June 5, Chick-fil-A is offering a tasting of their new Spicy Chicken Sandwich before it’s officially added to their menu. Make a reservation at http://www.getspicychicken.com

Still plenty of reservations available at the store nearest me (which is still so far). I’m thinking about renting a car just for this. I’ve done crazier things for Chick-fil-A, like missing my plane looking for it at the Atlanta airport. Little did I know they close on Sundays.

Thanks Todd for the link.

5th Avenue Street Fair 2010

Both my bands (Tigers and Monkeys & Justice of the Unicorns) joined Strega to play at the 5th Ave Street Fair in Park Slope yesterday at Bar Reis. Had a great time. Ate my MozzArepa (corn arepa with mozzarella cheese in the middle). It’s one of those things that look really awesome and taste good for the first few bites, but then you gotta pass it off to a friend …I mean share. That’s what I did.

Met a new friend, Nimesh, who had his first oyster there and even had his first brunch earlier that day. And it’s not like he just moved to the States, he’s from New Jersey. Funny guy.

I think one the best things I saw at the fair besides tube socks was Chip Shop’s huge fish and chips for $6. I also got a deep fried mac n cheese. It tasted like gooey mac n cheese with fried batter on top. Why’s it gotta be fried? I guess why not.

Near the end of the day, Adam and I roamed around for some food and we came across some Peruvian chicken that Coco Roco was trying to get rid of, $3 end of the day special! I didn’t hear what the girl said and decided to look at some ribs I saw earlier down the street. Adam must’ve thought I was crazy to pass it up, but maybe he trusted me as the food blogger. We ran back to grab those last two $3 chickens. The green and orange sauces they have are awesome. When are people going to bottle these for me?

Ran into a lot of friends. Ate good food. Left a drum stool in front of S’Nice and had to walk all the way back to get it. Slammed a beer at Great Lakes. Came home pooped from all the grill smoke and beer. My coughs sound like I’m dying right now.

Also ran into photographer, Stefano Giovannini. Check out his rad photos at http://stefpix.com/

Matt’s Singapore Food Photos

My burger buddy, Matt Drdek, recently came back from a teaching gig in Singapore. He brought me back some food photos. I was hoping for a t-shirt.

Matt: “These are all from the Hawker Centers which are little food courts all over Singapore. Basically it’s about 100 or so little stands that specialize in a couple dishes. Indian, Thai, Chinese, you name it. One of the pics is the seating situation at the Centers. The last close up is of Chicken and Rice which sounds boring but is apparently a Singapore specialty. They do all sorts of weird stuff with the chicken. Boil it, then put it in ice, somehow it make the fat do weird things in the skin. Weird tasty things.”

Thanks Matt!

Pi Day @ Pies-N-Thighs

Celebrated Pi Day (3/14) with members and friends of ScienceBlogs & Serious Eats at the new Pies-N-Thighs. We were supposed to meet up at 4pm, but found out last minute that they close from 4-5pm everyday. So 5pm it is. Luckily it was Daylight Savings (Spring forward), so we sorta did meet at 4pm after-all.

The new Pies-N-Thighs is a much nicer and cleaner version of the old place. Looks small, but there’s extra seating in the back. Everything I tasted was pretty good. The collards are cooked more than I’ve ever had, but still good. I liked the mac n cheese that had hot sauce on it. We ordered a slice of each pie they had. Banana Cream was a crowd favorite. I liked the Boozy Raisin. The Coconut Cream tasted like my lotion, but in a good way. We almost had to start dinner all over, because I forgot to take a photo of my own food (Carolina Pulled Pork Sandwich Box).

Check out ScienceBlogs for the latest on the 2010 Pi Day Bake-off. Plenty of entry photos up!

Upi Jaya Indonesian

I went to Upi Jaya, the place Mar recommended for authentic Indonesian food. It’s a family run restaurant on a quiet street. Maybe quiet, but has some character –as I saw a man in front of me on the sidewalk stopped to turn his head as a girl walked by. Then he gave lip smacking smooch as he stared at her behind. I wonder if that has ever worked.

I went with the Nasi Rames Ayam Gulai (Curry Chicken) $7.50. Nothing too fancy, but I feel like it’s like eating someone’s ethnic mother’s home-cooking. The decor even seemed like how someone’s mother would decorate –like what they think looks nice. And like someone’s mother, no alcohol, but you can have soda.

Rice-n-Tea’s Chicken Feet

Hit up another Chinese spot in Elmhurst. Another pick and point place (3 items over rice w/ soup for $4.75). Then there’s a bakery on the right and congee, dim sum, bbq on the left. There was a good crowd in there. All different types of people, although all Asian.

I went with the chicken feet (Phoenix Talons) from the dim sum section for $2.75. Some chili sauce and I was ready to go. If you were wondering, it’s mostly soft stewed skin and some tendons you’re eating. I used to like this as a kid. Then I learned it was chicken feet and was disgusted. I’m not afraid anymore, now that I know what other stuff I’m putting in my mouth. The chicken feet were good here. I ate it all.
