Good Feathers

A rotisserie chicken and comfort food restaurant next to the projects and between the two crack stores down the street from me. But with an awesome painted mural like this, I’m willing and ready. I think the best deal is the half chicken with rice and beans for $6.50. They ran out of rice and beans and offered me mac n cheese instead, from which I think the owner said “because I just got divorced.” But that doesn’t make any sense. Well I rather have the mac n cheese anyway, so score. The chicken was nice and seasoned. I could taste a hint of lemon.

New Sea World Restaurant

Hot off the fish sandwich from SeaWorld restaurant in Tribeca, I headed to New Sea World in Murray Hill. They have Broasted chicken. What is Broasted chicken? It’s pressure cooked deep fried chicken. Looks and taste like fried chicken, but the meat isn’t so greasy. Is it worth a trip to try it? I think it tastes like fried chicken. But after reading this Washington Post article about Broasted chicken, you will want to go to there. It’s a rare find. Very fortunate that SeaWorld has it. Two pieces and potatoes $3.50. The Broasted potatoes taste like KFC potato wedges with a lot less flavor. At least they have fancy sauce to dip.

Joell Ortiz & The Kickdrums video shoot

On set for Rik Cordero’s video for a song from his upcoming movie Inside a Change by Joell Ortiz and The Kickdrums …right down the street from my apt at the Cooper Housing Projects. The outdoor common area was cool. Benches, chess tables, at least three playgrounds. Imagine if us hipsters had a common area like that. I guess that’s called Williamsburg/Bushwick.

A lot of hospitality from the residents. Grilling out, putting the mustard on my dog. One booty girl tried to get Rusty to go up and smoke a blunt with her. A lot of meat and drinks from Western Beef. It was a once in a lifetime experience hanging in the projects.

I put together the backing band for the video. I was really impressed …with myself (j/k). I didn’t know how it was going to go without everyone never ever meeting or practicing. Great job guys. You did awesome.

Rik is nominated for this year’s BET Video Director of the Year. Check it out Sunday June 28th, hosted by Jamie Foxx.

Meat on Meat 3-Way

Rusty got the spareribs and chicken thighs, Sam brought home the bacon and took the pics, and I touched the meat. I figure we could make some kind of meaty casserole pie out of all this. The first layer of pork spareribs seasoned with oregano and chili powder. Layer of bacon. Layer of chicken thighs seasoned with salt, pepper & Old Bay. Top layer of bacon with chili peppers and garlic cloves. We ended up cooking it for around 2 1/2 hours at 360 degrees. Is it worthwhile to cook it this way? Probably not. This is why we’re fat.com.

Update: This tastes so much better two days later. Drain the fat, dump BBQ sauce and crushed chili peppers all over it, reheat at 425 for about 15mins.

Roast Chicken and Honky Tonk Jamboree

Back to where I once lived in South Park Slope or Windsor Terrace. I had dinner at the Dominican restaurant right off the Prospect Ave stop. Had the roast chicken with rice and beans while watching Latino soap operas. Don’t worry if you start spilling beans and sauce all over the table …it’s happened to me before. I went to the Country Honky Tonk Jamboree at Buttermilk bar fronted by Alex Battles. My friend Dan plays his home-made gas-tank upright bass with the group. It was packed and anyone can go up and jam or sing. I’m practicing my Conway Twitty right now. Thank you, Youtube.

Grand BBQ Pollos

Walked by this place with the worse photos of their food on their windows. I figure the food can’t be that bad looking in real life. It really isn’t. All they need is photoshop.

Kakaw! Kakaw!

“Pio Pio” is how Peruvians think a chicken clucks. Like how Spanish people think dogs go “guau guau”. Oh I think they speak the same language. Anyway Jody and Christa take me to this cool Peruvian place in Greenpoint. A nice big plate of 1/4 chicken with beans and rice for $5.25. They have pretty cute waitress that are funny and dance and fight over the mp3 player playing classic 90’s oldies like the Cure and that song “How Bizarre How Bizarre”. I hear they also have a cool spanish band playing on Saturdays. Most importantly they have green sauce.

I got a huge appetizer plate that’s like a sampler of sorts (i.e. poo poo platter). It had this delicious potato with spicy cheesy sauce and the thing I really wanted to try –beef hearts. Call me Captain Beefheart. It tasted like beef teriyaki for real. I had beef heart leftovers that I brought to work. And when I was putting it on a plate to reheat, this cute voice actress came up and thought it looked really good. She wanted to know more. But I didn’t have the heart to tell her.
