Eugene’s Comedy Festival kicked off last night in 3D with Emo Philips, Tony V., Larry Murphy, Ron Lynch and Jon Glaser. There were surprises like Louis C.K., free hair styling and mounds of Roast Duck from Great NY Noodletown all for the taking. I forgot how much I love Ginger Scallion Sauce on meats. I had two plates of duck and totally got my money’s worth. Well I did sneak in for free, but I would’ve.
Anyway, there are sure to be more surprises and great comedy (David Cross, Kristen Schaal, Marc Maron, John Oliver, etc) to come the rest of the weekend festival. It all ends with cooking a whole lamb on a spit this Sunday at the Bell House. Fuck.
Two different friends this week told me that The Commodore in Brooklyn has the best fried chicken they’ve ever had. They ain’t kidding. I got some friends to meet there for happy hour. The fried batter was so light and mix that in with the honey butter and hot sauce …hot dang. The Hot Fish Sandwich with spicy fried fish topped with cole slaw was amazing. I gobbled it up so quick because I didn’t want to share no more.
Then we headed over to Good Company, where Sam Jayne was taping his “Hi Mom, I’m on the Sam Jayne Show” –a television variety show filmed in a bar before a live studio audience. He kills two birds with one stone by bartending and hosting a show at the same time. I took a lot of photos with my new Canon EOS T2i DSLR camera I got this afternoon. What you think? I had a difficult time with the 50mm f/1.8 lens, only because I had to be like ten feet away from the food to get it in frame. But luckily this means I can take photos of other people’s food from another table.
After, Rusty and I headed back to The Commodore to give Yasmin (my ex and ex-bandmate) a Justice of the Unicorns shirt. She made us a coconut tiki drink. Russ invited her back into the band. I wonder if that means I’m kicked out.
We ended up at Carmine’s II where we saw Carmine. I think we had too much to drink because Rusty told Carmine the same thing ten times and tried to pay twice. They got a real nice backyard there. Then back home, Rusty modeled a bunch of different Justice of the Unicorns shirts that his friend JB (American Crossroads Apparel) made for us. Not just shirts, but skirts, aprons, negligee and a karate outfit. They are badass.

Justice of the Unicorns was to play a few songs at Adam’s monthly comedy night (It is It) at Pianos last Monday. I totally forgot and had planned to go to the Faith No More concert. But it all worked out after I traveled all the way to the Time Square box office to find it was closed for the weekend and then come back home to find that tickets were sold out. I figured the Metal Rap Gods had something else in store for me this night.
Comedian Hannibal Burress had a few food bloggy jokes. One about Halal food. I don’t remember if there was a punch line, but he said “halal” and it was funny because I know that is.
Then upstairs they had karaoke, where they kept giving us tequila shots with every PBR. It got nutz. Christa rocked some Heart and I got my Faith No More fix.
One more stop at San Loco, where it was the perfect ending to all those tequilas and PBR. An aluminum tray of Gringo-Mex Enchiladas (beef enchiladas smothered in beef chili and topped with shredded cheddar, onions and sour cream). It’s everything you’d think it would taste like when you see it.

Friends Eric and Leo had a preview of their upcoming shorts for HBO’s “Funny or Die Presents” at Black Rabbit last night. Watched, laughed, ate. May I recommend the Welsh Rarebit Fondue (beer fondue made with White Cheddar, Hoeggarden Beer, dry mustard and spices. Served with toasted bread cubes). I should’ve ordered some more sliders to dunk them in.
The shorts were great. I’m glad to see the comedy duo of Slovin & Allen back together out front in the limelight. It’s been a while. I remember seeing them on MTV and Comedy Central back when I was little kid. I’m not sure if I ever told them that. I’m not sure if I should.

In the meantime, here are two high-schoolers performing an old Slovin & Allen bit…
Yesterday, I spent the morning on my friends’ (The Variety SHAC) comedy pilot shoot for IFC. It looks like it’s gonna be awesome and star-studded (including a famous food blogger in the background). I split a bacon, egg & cheese sandwich with Fred Armisen. I think he liked it. I thought it could use some mayo. That, donuts and coffee for the morning craft services. Then the table turned into snacks from Trader Joe’s –an array of cookies, fruits and energy bars. For lunch, big trays of Italian and Mexican food that smelled like Chinese take-out in the hallway.
And today, I was just picking up some blood sausages for tonight and happen to pass by Daniella’s Coffee Shop Diner which was shut down for some production crew. And then I saw my friends dressed as cops with mustaches in the window. Rusty said he did see a TV crew in his way when he was trying to come back from C-Town and wondered what assholes were shooting in there. Funny.
Went to this mardi gras house party in Greenpoint. They had food shipped from New Orleans. All so good. The turtle soup is what lured me in. Tasted like pork gravy sauce. I liked it a lot. Had a girl show me how to eat the crawfish. I think she freaked a little when I said I was allergic to shellfish after I ate two of them. Is turtle soup shellfish?
Monday night was a crazy fun. First stopped in for happy hour at Cake shop then went to Adam Lowitt’s comedy night at Pianos. UF represent. Ran into my friend Alex Castle. He makes some funny videos on his site. He suggested getting what he was having …the Red Wine Burger and request some red wine sauce on the fries. That sauce is awesome. So good.
Demetri Martin performed at Adam’s show. This guy’s is going to be huge. He’s going to star in a new Ang Lee movie (I don’t know much about it, but sounds like Brokeback 2) and his new TV series premieres tonight on Comedy Central. A little known fact: I had a bit part on his TV show he made for the BBC years back. I didn’t even know my character had a name until I saw it on IMDB. But they have my name mixed up with another Jason Lam who played Chinese Man #7.
Christa and Jody were still hungry so we went to San Loco. I got the Pork PeePee. It’s spelled Pork Pipian, but I swear it’s pronounced Pork PeePee. At least they understand what I’m talking about every time I say it. I made sure we had stupid sauce.
Then back in the burg for Sam Jayne’s new Monday night Karaoke at Legion. That was a lot of fun. I sang Highway Star with Sam. When I got home, I noticed all this lint on my clothes. I figured it was from the bar. It made me reluctant to go again, but then I realized that no one is making me roll around on the floor.
