Nathan’s Original Coney Island vs Nathan’s Satellite

So I’ve been to Nathan’s Original in Coney Island on Surf Ave. I’ve been to the one on the boardwalk at Coney Island. I’ve been to the one at MCU baseball park in Coney Island. I think I’ve been to one at some rest stop before. They should all be the same, right? It’s the same hot dog. You just heat it up and put it on a bun. Well, my friend Todd was like, “any other satellite Nathan’s is like eating a mall hot dog.” I was in Coney Island at MCU Park for the Burger Beach Bash music festival. Let’s put this to the test.

I started off with a hot dog at MCU Park in Coney Island …a short walk from the OG –Nathan’s Original on Surf Ave. It was basically $5 after tax and the change for tip. It was a small hot dog on a crusty broken bun. It was too salty and sucked. I guess it’s all uphill from here.

I realized that one of the MCU stands only had the small hot dogs. At another stand, I could buy a foot long for more.

I got some krinkled fries since they didn’t have the knish I wanted to buy. But it was pretty good. Although, there was barely anymore ketchup. I fought a cute girl for the last bits of it. We both took a packet of BBQ sauce to make up.

At the end of the night, I walked back to the subway and decided to try the Original on Surf Ave. I said I wanted a hot dog. I think there’s only one choice and it’s the foot long and it’s the same price as the small dog at MCU Park. I noticed they are cooking on a flat top grill, whereas MCU Park was on those rolling hot dog grills that you used to see at the mall and roller skating rinks in the 80’s. The hot dog at the OG was totally different. Well, it was still salty, but better snap and better bun. Just cooked a lot better.

My friend was right. The satellite Nathan’s sucks vs the OG. Fuck him.

I also got a Soft Shell Crab Sandwich ($7.19 plus tax). I would have never thought they had a soft shell crab sandwich …and seems like a pretty good price for one. It was pretty good. Tasted like the BK Whaler …or what they call now the “Big Fish Sandwich” for the last 14 years or so. But it had a little bit of shellfish taste to it. I liked it more than the hot dogs.

Siren Fest 2010 Recap

Out with friends in Coney Island for yesterday’s Siren Fest. The singer from Screaming Females was like the girl version of me. She had my hair. I always wondered what I looked like on stage. But this girl shredded hard on guitar, unlike me. They were badass.

For food, I’ve waited a year to come back to try that huge torta sandwich in the midway that I saw last year after I had already stuffed my face. Plaza Mexico Dona Zita, I’m glad you’re still around. I’ve seen two other Mexican spots there turn into a t-shirt store. Pork Torta –the lady took the big bread buns, spread it with mayonnaise and put them mayo side down on the griddle, spread refried beans and back on the griddle, then topped with lotsa chopped pork, pickled jalapeño peppers, half an avocado, tons of Oaxaca cheese, lettuce, tomato. It was as awesome tasting as it was awesome looking. Sam and I had to split this. $8. Worth every cent.

Watched some more bands and went back out with Shonali and Jasper for more food. We stopped over at the newish Kaplash Cuchifritos stand (I think that’s how they spell it. I can’t read the sign.) Got the mofongo and chicharrón (which I never had just as the pork rind and no meat). A nice lady next to us shared her fried plantains and meaty chunks version of chicharrón. She was really into the food there. Then Shonali and Jasper grabbed a chorizo & chicken taco and watermelon juice. I was about to say that Todd got diarrhea sick from the chorizo there last year, but didn’t because I didn’t want to put that in their heads. They did leave Siren early, so I do wonder.

Out on the beach, I think I was the hottest girl there. The lifeguard was so ghetto. He had a do-rag and smoked a cigarette. He yelled at some kid “No dunking!” I don’t think the kid was in the water. I’m not sure if he was a real lifeguard, but at least he was making sure everyone was safe.

We saw former WWF wrestler Virgil on the boardwalk, signing autographs. He said he was going to dinner with Michael Bloomberg and talked about how rich him and Vince McMahon are. I wonder if he was confused with the Million Dollar Man.

The rest of the night had a lot to do with cups of straight vodka …some from Dan Aykroyd and some from a man hiding behind a tent with a granny cart.

Great time at Siren! Thanks Neil, Diane, Shonali and the Village Voice.

My camera’s audio sucks.

Siren Fest 2009 at Coney Island Recap

The Siren Festival this year was a ton of fun, despite not knowing most of the bands. I noticed a lot of the food stands at the new flea market are coming from places from Brooklyn. The pupusa truck from Red Hook –it was delicious. Freshly pattied pupusas on the grill. I had mine filled with Loroco Flower and Cheese. I’m not sure what Loroco Flower is, but it added a green veggie like mild chives.

I walked along Surf Ave to check out that Dice’s Grab and Go that I was curious about last week and it turned out to be a souvenir T-shirt stand. However there was a couple selling soul food right next door. I got a small jerk chicken with rice & beans and cabbage for $5. I wasn’t expecting much, but they freakin piled it on. The jerk chicken came right off the grill and it was so awesome. I couldn’t believe how much I got. Spicy & flavorful!

I ran into my friends who just came from the Doña Zita Mexican stand in the midway. They thought the tacos were awesome. Rusty says a little nine-year old girl took their order. I investigated and saw them making these huge stacked Tortas (Mexican sandwiches) on the grill. Amazing.

I walked around the Flea Market food stands. Came across this latino stand where I got a small fried pocket of beef and potato for $4. I expected it to be like $2 for its size. It was alright. The filling was pretty decent, reminded me of monfongo. The outer crust was tough. Later, I ran into other friends where we got $1 Chicken Drumsticks. Pretty sweet deal. Jasper picked up an empanada and his own platter of pupusas. I walked along the backside and saw a few hidden stands with low foot traffic. Felt bad. One was a family with trays of Caribbean food that looked really good, but I couldn’t eat another huge platter. I went with a $2 pork taco from the Prospect Park taco stand. The pork chunks were so tender. They piled it on for me, probably because they were just happy for the business.

As far as the music, I’m glad I got to see Frank Black in his new band, Grand Duchy. I didn’t know he was even playing until a few days ago. Monotonix, the band I was most excited to check out again, were playing in the crowd. At least one point, the crowd was holding up the drummer and his drums so he can play above the sea of people. It was crazy. I had a ton of fun this year, although let’s forget about the crazy drunk girl rubbing her boobs on me. Thanks Shonali, Diane & Village Voice!
