Sage Thai Brooklyn

We were very fortunate that we didn’t get it hard with Hurricane Sandy in Williamsburg. With a lot of friends without power, internet, hot water, we were very fortunate here.

I met up with Justin for lunch nearby, since all the subways were down after the storm. We went to Sage for Thai food where Cono & Son O’pescatore used to be. It’s weird. This newish restaurant doesn’t quite look like a Thai restaurant. But since the neighborhood has been changing a lot, I guess it makes sense. I’ve walked by a few times before and never seen so many customers as there was this time. I imagine it’s because everyone was stuck in Brooklyn.

We got lunch specials –For around $9 each, Pad See Ew noodles, Red Curry and an appetizer each. The Tom Kha soup was served in a coffee mug, but it was still good. Lots of vegetables in there. The shrimp dumplings were pretty good too. Pad See Ew and Red Curry were solid.

Overall, I was impressed or maybe surprised that it was pretty decent Brooklyn Thai food. The service was really spotty though. Maybe they’ve never been this busy before.

Tandoor Palace

I stopped by Shonali’s place to be a part of her podcast with Christian. I haven’t heard it yet. I’m always scared to listen to my voice. Anyway, afterwards Shonali took me to Tandoor Palace nearby in the Financial District. It’s above a shoe repair shop.

We got the lunch specials. If you get the option, get the Naan bread over the rice. It’s huge and made to order. The size is what makes it such more impressive than the rice. Rice is just rice.

The food was decent oily fast Indian curry style. Nice spicy heat.

Upi Jaya Indonesian

I went to Upi Jaya, the place Mar recommended for authentic Indonesian food. It’s a family run restaurant on a quiet street. Maybe quiet, but has some character –as I saw a man in front of me on the sidewalk stopped to turn his head as a girl walked by. Then he gave lip smacking smooch as he stared at her behind. I wonder if that has ever worked.

I went with the Nasi Rames Ayam Gulai (Curry Chicken) $7.50. Nothing too fancy, but I feel like it’s like eating someone’s ethnic mother’s home-cooking. The decor even seemed like how someone’s mother would decorate –like what they think looks nice. And like someone’s mother, no alcohol, but you can have soda.
