King Crab Legs, Lobster Tails and Whole Boar at Sun Sweet Market

I’ve been eating surf and turf every day this past week for lunch, because I just noticed this deli, Sun Sweet Market, a few blocks from my office. They have a pay-by-the-pound buffet bar that includes lobster tails, king crab legs, scallops and a lot of different shrimp. I also see on Yelp, they’ve had whole cooked lamb and whole boar before. That looks ridiculous on the buffet bar.

05 Whole Boar - Sun Sweet Market
[UPDATE: I went today and they had the whole boar. Pretty crazy looking. It was just okay. Rubbery skin and average pork meat. But good enough with mayo]

It’s a dollar more than my favorite deli, Sunac, at $8.99/lb. Not bad. It’s actually average price for the area, but they have pretty high ticket priced items.

What I like to do is get a half lobster tail, some steak, a couple of scallops and the bacon-wrapped shrimp, along with a small cup of soup. It ends up being around $8-9. It’s not amazing tasting lobster, but it all works out if you grab some free mayonnaise packets.

El Comal Deli and Grill

I got a comment here the other day from Evan:

Hey. You need to go to El Comal on Orient and Metropolitan. Seriously. Amazing. Mexican Food cooked to order in the back. So cheap. Also, they need our business. I don’t want them to go away. Been there two months and I don’t see a lot of people. We need more food in the Orient, maspeth, olive triangle. Support the hood! Get people going there.

I’ve seen this place. I thought it was just a regular bodega. It was shortly a 99cent store pretty recently.

I told Todd about this and he went there yesterday. He confirmed that the tacos are good.

I went here today with Rusty and Dave Dondero. The bodega is large. Spacious, but not a whole lot of products. They have steam tray tables meant for some kind of buffet, but they are empty. There’s a shelf of tortilla shells, cheese, salsas and raw meat you can buy to make tacos at home. And then the grill is in the back.

They make all sorts of things, Mexican food (tacos, enchiladas, sopes, tortas) to breakfasts platters and sandwiches.

I ordered three tacos for myself ($2.50 each). I got a carne asada (beef), carnitas (pork) and lengua (tongue). They all came out looking the same, but did taste different. I think what was the carne asada was the best. But all really good. Very authentic Mexican style tacos.

If only this place sold beer and stayed open later. I’ll be back.

HIT Deli & Korean Food

This tiny deli is inside a building. I guess most are in New York, but I mean you have to go inside the building and down a hall to get to it. The thing that interests me is that they have Korean food. So I gave it a try.

I got the most expensive meal – Bulgogi Deopbap Beef Box $12. The other Korean boxes are cheaper at around $9. It came in a hefty platter sectioned off neatly –with potatoes, cellophane noodles, salad, rice and the Korean sliced marinated beef.

The food was alright. Looked pretty, but didn’t impress me. It got me stuffed though. The soup was too salty, but I’m not sure if it’s one of those things that you pour over the rice? I don’t know. That makes more sense.

The people were nice in there. They seem to have regulars like this old guy who apparently gets coffee all the time. In my photo, it looks like he doesn’t have a head. No photoshop.

Mike’s Coffee & Deli

I really like the look of this deli in the 32nd St wall. Although I think they might’ve put up a new awning. Places like this should look as old and scummy as it could in my opinion. That’s the only reason why visit them.

I walked up to the wall and ordered a hot pastrami sandwich ($4.50) with lettuce and tomato (50cent extra). And they made it so quick. A good solid deli sandwich –fast, cheap and from a wall. I’m going to try their $2 burger next.

Jamaican Me Hungry Sandwich

A few nights ago, I was at my local corner deli, Golden Star Corner. We were talking about taking a photo of their great new True Grit sandwich (roast beef, honey turkey, turkey bacon, lettuce/tomato, cheese on a hero) for them to hang up. I had been drinking and I was trying to impress a girl that was ordering a sandwich. I told her to get one with a Jamaican beef patty in it. That sparked the idea behind the Jamaican Me Hungry.

Jamaican Me Hungry (beef patty, cheese, ham, peppers, onions, mayo and hot sauce) …dang. My dreams have become a reality. I can only imagine all the kids from Legion ordering one after a wild late night.

I hope you enjoy them.

God Bless Deli’s Chicken over Rice Platter

Stopped into the 24-hour God Bless Deli in Greenpoint one late night. I ordered the “Special” Chicken over Rice Platter $5.99 w/ a free can of soda. It’s the heaviest carton of street-meat style food I’ve ever held. White sauce, hot sauce. It was solid. If anyone ever wanted street-meat food late night in Greenpoint, God Bless Deli.
