Faro (Bushwick)

There’s a new restaurant in Jefftown from a former chef from Northeast Kingdom. It’s a pasta restaurant. But I don’t eat much carbs. So I got the Mallard Duck Breast. The duck was good. I don’t know what else to say. I give up.

Eugene Mirman Will Cook A Whole Lamb On A Spit This Sunday

Eugene’s Comedy Festival kicked off last night in 3D with Emo Philips, Tony V., Larry Murphy, Ron Lynch and Jon Glaser. There were surprises like Louis C.K., free hair styling and mounds of Roast Duck from Great NY Noodletown all for the taking. I forgot how much I love Ginger Scallion Sauce on meats. I had two plates of duck and totally got my money’s worth. Well I did sneak in for free, but I would’ve.

Anyway, there are sure to be more surprises and great comedy (David Cross, Kristen Schaal, Marc Maron, John Oliver, etc) to come the rest of the weekend festival. It all ends with cooking a whole lamb on a spit this Sunday at the Bell House. Fuck.

East Corner Wonton

Yasmin took me to East Corner Wonton …not for their wontons, but for their duck. Yeah, the wonton noodle soup wasn’t anything special. The duck, however, was awesome. It didn’t look fatty, but tasted like the fat flavor melted into the meat. Cheap too.

Wombat Brunch

Met up with friends for brunch at Wombat (where we got the $13 lobsters). They have some interesting items on the menu like Stuffed French Toast and Duck Hash, for which I went for the latter. Not too bad, but maybe not enough salt. Then I realized how much salt I kept adding. I wonder what that says about what I normally eat.

I was worried all morning about my band’s new album cover …if I can get the rights to the artwork. Then a man selling African carved/leather animals on the street came up to our table. I saw it right there. A deer that looked totally stoned. Turns out my photographer friend saw that guy too and really wanted to take a photo of that same deer. So now I got the deer and the photographer. The world works in mysterious ways.

Wombat – 613 Grand St (btwn Lorimer & Leonard) Brooklyn, NY 11211

Laura from brunch sent me her Zampa diet chart. I’m not sure what she said about it and why she said she was going to send it. I think my mind was occupied with the African leather deer.

Matt’s Singapore Food Photos

My burger buddy, Matt Drdek, recently came back from a teaching gig in Singapore. He brought me back some food photos. I was hoping for a t-shirt.

Matt: “These are all from the Hawker Centers which are little food courts all over Singapore. Basically it’s about 100 or so little stands that specialize in a couple dishes. Indian, Thai, Chinese, you name it. One of the pics is the seating situation at the Centers. The last close up is of Chicken and Rice which sounds boring but is apparently a Singapore specialty. They do all sorts of weird stuff with the chicken. Boil it, then put it in ice, somehow it make the fat do weird things in the skin. Weird tasty things.”

Thanks Matt!

Family Noodle

I got off at the East Broadway stop for lunch on this Christmas Eve and came out of the exit where I always get lost.  I decided to stick with it and see what I can discover. After a little walk, I saw a window with peking duck, roast pork & chicken. Just what I had in mind. I got a generous plate of roast duck & pork on rice for only 5 dolla. Pretty awesome. That’s like the price of a VCD/DVD bootleg.

I saw them prepare some of the dishes behind the counter. It reminded me the time when I was little chinolam hanging out in my father’s kitchen at Lam’s Garden. I would throw peas from the peapods into the deep fryer. They slowly sink, then pop right up and spin around like a speedboat.
