Dining with Dondero: Buffalo House (Proctor, MN)

American singer-songwriter, David Dondero, is reporting in his meals from his current tour. He’s living my dream of playing music and eating on the road. Here is Buffalo House Bar & Restaurant in Proctor, MN.

The Buffalo House in Proctor, MN.  Just up the hill from Duluth, MN where i was born..  I used to go there as a kid back in the 70’s.  I remembered riding down the roller coaster dirt road between fences and white birch trees.  Inside those fences were hundreds of buffalo.  The Buffalo House sold the meat from the herd.

I returned last week to check it out again after over 30 years.  Much has changed.  The buffalo herd is gone and the pasture is now a baseball and volleyball field.  They’ve added an RV Campground and it’s now in a completely different new building.  Not sure if the old place burned down or was torn down.

I dined with my Uncle Bob and we decided to split 2 entree’s.  I got the Buffalo Steak with waffle fries and chicken & rice soup on the side.  Uncle Bob got the fresh Lake Superior Walleye grilled with Cajun spice and garlic mashed potatoes.  We split both dishes.

Uncle Bob raved about the rolls at the old Buffalo House.  The rolls came out but i could tell right away they weren’t the same.  “They used to be fresh”   he said..  “It was one of the best things they had..”  not the same now.  They were okay.. kinda like rolls from the high school cafeteria.

The soup came next.  Chicken and wild rice.  It was not really soup..  It was more like a gelatinous clump with bits of chicken and swollen white rice.  You could eat it with a fork but was really bland.  I had to add alot of salt and pepper to give it any flavor.  It was like the soup at the senior citizens home I used to work at.  It was horrible.  Uncle Bob seemed to like it.

The main course came up and the lady plopped it on the table like returning bowling shoes at the bowling alley.  Then she clomped off in her Buffalo House t-shirt.  The Buffalo steak portion was tiny.  About the size of a hot dog.  I ordered it rare but it came out medium and was hard to cut through with a steak knife.  It was tough meat.  Not horrible, just not very good.

The only redeeming quality to the meal was the fresh Walleye.  That was delicious and i wish i ordered it too.  Basically grilled with cajun seasoning sprinkled all over it.  It’s not hard to go wrong with that.

They had 64 ounce beers but I got my usual Miller Lite long neck vortex bottle to wash it down.  It was great catching up with Uncle Bob and he paid for the meal.  Thanks Uncle Bob.  It wasn’t his idea to go there by the way.  He said he hadn’t gone there in 15 years..  It was nice to see the new Buffalo House but probably wait another 35 years to go back.

The Tap & Grill Clambar at Rockaway Beach

The weather’s been great for us to check out Rockaway Beach. First stop was to get a beer of course. And that first bar we past was The Tap & Grill. It’s Rockaway’s oldest clambar since 1934. Some cool old pics on their site.

I ordered some fish tacos. Glad I did. The Rockaway Taco line around the corner was nuts. I just want to eat, not buggin out waiting. Fish tacos were great. Fish was like the kind you’d get if you ordered fish & chips. Cod I believe. The ceviche-style salsa punched up the flavor.

Rockaway Beach was cool. Not crowded and stinky like Coney Island and closer than Long Beach. Huge recycle bins you can lock your kid in and a prison-style concrete picnic yard.

Grabbed another beer on the way back to the train at the divier Rockaway Beach Inn. The bartender there said Rockaway Tacos are “out of this world.” I started to regret not trying them.

Everyone was really nice in Rockaway …at both bars. Even the lady wearing double denim (jeans and jacket) with the black eye. I can’t wait to come back.

Halal Food Cart 5th Ave and 21st St

It’s a beautiful day to get skin cancer. I grabbed a platter of Fried Fish over Rice from the Halal Cart on 5th Ave (between 21st & 20th St). They had three different rices. A brown one, a light yellow one and a bright saffron yellow one. The light yellow had some vegetables and the rice had big granules.

Overall a decent plate of fish and rice. The guy also tossed on some chicken. Same thing happened with the two people ordering fish ahead of me. Isn’t that a little presumptuous?  Maybe it’s just the company I keep, but usually I assume most fish eaters are pescatarian (vegetarian except for fish/seafood). Most of my friends would have freaked if someone threw chicken on their fish/vegetarian platter.

I took it back to Madison Square Park and sat with all the young folk on the lawn, where they have the new Echo sculpture. It’s surreal sitting next to it. A lot of people taking photos and everyone else acting like it doesn’t exist.

I took a Fatbooth photo of Echo.

Japanese Dried Fish Snacks

Shane brought me back these Japanese Dried Fish Snacks from Japan. Actually he didn’t know what they were when he got them and I didn’t know what they were when I ate them. One is Wasabi-Nori, which I assume is wasabi-flavored seaweed. The other had a picture of grilled Eel on the package. Both tasted very similar. Very fishy, sweet and soy sauce flavored. Not brittle like a cracker, but very chewy.

Sam translated the package to me. Both are made from fish. The Wasabi-Nori package has the cartoon saying “Up your nose” (like how wasabi burns up your nose) and “Mmm-chewy-munch-munch”.

It’s kinda like Fish Fruit Roll-Ups.

Grand Seafood’s Free Fish Steam

Grand Seafood & Fish Market (formerly An’s Seafood —soft shell crab & fish sandwich) has been advertising their “Free Steam” on their signs. I’ve been wanting to check this out.

When I got there, there were already kids getting clams/mussels, shrimp and vegetables steamed up. I picked out a little red snapper fish. The guy cleaned it up and spiced it up with Old Bay and garlic powder. There’s an option to add vegetables for $1.50.

It didn’t come out pretty, but it sure tasted good. I only had to pay for the fish ($4.60). Free cooking. That’s a sweet deal. Make sure you get a side of fried shrimp.

They also advertise that they take food stamps. We saw a guy buy 6 lobster tails with them. Well, it is food.

Mother’s Tilapia Fish Sandwich

Rusty and I have been spending a lot of time at Mother’s bar lately for an after-work Gaffel or three. I always see people eat there and finally took my shot at the Tilapia  Fish Sandwich. Dang, it’s good. Maybe needs a little more of that fancy sauce, but it’s a nicely cooked & seasoned piece of fish. And yes, farm raised tilapia is bad for you …apparently worse than bacon (see this article). But I would be happy to order a bacon sandwich just as well, so I know what I’m getting into. I could really taste the delicious heart clogging oils coating the flaky clumps of fish and it was heaven …which might not be too far off eating the way I do.

The Commodore’s Hot Fish Sandwich and Fried Chicken!

Two different friends this week told me that The Commodore in Brooklyn has the best fried chicken they’ve ever had. They ain’t kidding. I got some friends to meet there for happy hour. The fried batter was so light and mix that in with the honey butter and hot sauce …hot dang. The Hot Fish Sandwich with spicy fried fish topped with cole slaw was amazing. I gobbled it up so quick because I didn’t want to share no more.

Then we headed over to Good Company, where Sam Jayne was taping his “Hi Mom, I’m on the Sam Jayne Show” –a television variety show filmed in a bar before a live studio audience. He kills two birds with one stone by bartending and hosting a show at the same time. I took a lot of photos with my new Canon EOS T2i DSLR camera I got this afternoon. What you think? I had a difficult time with the 50mm f/1.8 lens, only because I had to be like ten feet away from the food to get it in frame. But luckily this means I can take photos of other people’s food from another table.

After, Rusty and I headed back to The Commodore to give Yasmin (my ex and ex-bandmate) a Justice of the Unicorns shirt. She made us a coconut tiki drink. Russ invited her back into the band. I wonder if that means I’m kicked out.

We ended up at Carmine’s II where we saw Carmine. I think we had too much to drink because Rusty told Carmine the same thing ten times and tried to pay twice. They got a real nice backyard there. Then back home, Rusty modeled a bunch of different Justice of the Unicorns shirts that his friend JB (American Crossroads Apparel) made for us. Not just shirts, but skirts, aprons, negligee and a karate outfit. They are badass.

Deep Fried Largemouth Bass

We started cooking up some fish as soon as we landed from our flight back from New Orleans. Rusty deep fried the Largemouth Bass, one of which I caught. It was somewhat symbolic when he dropped the fish into the oil. Perhaps oil was his fate if we caught him or not.

And no stopping Tony’s creole seasoning. I add it to everything now. Open a can of green peas and sprinkle it with love.
