New World Mall Flushing Food Court

We left the Mets game early and went a couple of stops East to Flushing to get some food. I had already eaten the Pat LaFrieda Steak Sandwich and had dinner plans soon. So I didn’t get anything, but luckily still got to taste everyone’s food.

We went to the New World Mall food court. So many choices of Asian food. I noticed this time, there were a lot more plastic and styrofoam containers versus real bowls and plates. I couldn’t wait to see what everyone got.

Todd and Daniel split a big bowl at LaoMa MaLaTang. It ended up costing $28 at $8/lb. I asked why they got so much food? He said because the Chinese lady was an asshole and just grabbed a bunch of meat and put in the bowl. Now he thinks all Chinese people are mean assholes.

It was really good though. Beef, Chicken and vegetables (mushrooms, broccoli, bok choy) cooked with mouth numbing spices. Really good. Just too much food. I saw two small girls sharing an even bigger bowl next to us. They were taking phone pics of it, obviously.

Sam and Dave got food at Conway BBQ. A BBQ Noodle Soup and a $5 Teriyaki Chicken with Rice. Much more affordable per person and pretty decent.

And the Matcha Green Tea was really tasty from Kung Fu Tea. Man, I would love to come back when I’m ready to eat a full meal.

Eating at a Mets Game

We all got free tickets to the Mets vs Marlins opening weekend. I guess they weren’t selling, so they were giving them away. Actually all our tickets were in different sections. But because there were so many empty seats, we easily just chose to sit together.

Jody came over with a burger, fries and coke that was $17. I was like fuck. I guess that makes sense, since my Bud Light was $11.

I went to get my meal during the 3rd inning. I ran into an open food area that had a Pat LaFrieda’s Filet Mignon Steak Sandwich stand. $15 for the sandwich and the cashier warned me it would be 10-15mins. I said cool.

The cashier asked me to stand over to the right side to wait. The girl behind me in line thought the cashier was talking to her. Then she was like, “oh, she means her (pointing to me).” She thought I was a girl. But I think she realized I was a dude right when she said that.

I thought it would be embarrassing for her when she came over to wait with me. But instead she stood in front of me against the counter. I figure that was fine, but turns out there were no order numbers. The guy was just putting out sandwiches as they came. So that first sandwich that was mine, she grabbed and touched it and was like “oh, we have three more sandwiches.” So while she was standing there with that lone sandwich that belonged to me, I had to wait another ten minutes for them to bring out more. And she couldn’t leave either because she didn’t have her full order. Why didn’t she just give me that sandwich? Then I could leave and eat? I hated her so much. I was so pissed, I couldn’t enjoy the sandwich. Anyway, it kinda sucked.

I spent $37 on two beers and a sandwich that I didn’t like. Now I can see why those tickets were free. They can totally make their money off concessions. Well the free pickles at the toppings bar are pretty good.

Then it got so cold and windy. Everyone was leaving. We left too. Turned out it was an exciting game with a 9th inning comeback victory for the Mets. I don’t think I really cared.

Yi Lan Halal Restaurant

Sam has a car and decided we needed to drive to Flushing to eat Chinese food. Cool with me. We looked at the Village Voice 10 Best Chinese Restaurants in NYC (…which coincidentally, Sam had just shot the cover for the Voice). We picked #1 Yi Lan Halal Restaurant. Why not? Go for the best on the list.

We picked the Lamb Dumplings (20 for $6), Beef Tongue and Tail with Brown Sauce ($16.95) and Sea Cucumber with Scallions ($17.95). The Lamb Dumplings were amazing and a good deal. The other two dishes, I don’t know. Maybe overpriced for what I thought it would be looking at the restaurant. The tongue and tail meat were tender. I just didn’t like the thick browns sauce too much. And the Sea Cucumbers were so difficult to pick up with chopsticks. So slippery, gelatinous and swirmy.

If I go back, I’d stick with the cheaper options like the dumplings and noodles. I just didn’t realize Sea Cucumbers would cost that much. But when we went to the Chinese supermarket across the street, they were expensive. So were the bullfrogs surprisingly.

Sam had also shot my headshot this weekend. I’m available for private events.

Flushing Golden Mall

The last place I took my family was the Golden Mall in Flushing. We pretty much ate all the same great food I had with Brian and Jimmy. Beef Tripe with Hot Pepper Sauce and the best Dumplings in Chili Sauce from the Cheng Du Tian Fu stall, Lamb Burger and Qi Noodles from Xian Famous Foods and a bowl of Hand-pulled noodles from the Lan Zhou stall.

I think this was a winner with my family, even though I don’t think we were supposed to feed my parents so much spicy food.

Oh and we took one of those Chinatown to Chinatown busses. Only $2.75 per person. The trip was around 20-30mins from Manhattan Chinatown to Flushing. Sure beats the long ass train.

Mini Golf in Flushing Meadows

Adam organized a putt-putt outing in Flushing Meadows, Corona Park. First stop was at the Creek and the Cave in Long Island City for tacos and happy hour. My beer-battered fish taco was surprisingly good. I felt bad that the cook had to do all the work of frying my fish for just one taco. I don’t know how the menu works, but the sautéed spinach plate is $9.50 …you can add chicken for $0.95. I thought it would be the other way around. But I did watch Food Inc …so that might be right.

We hit the 7 train and only a short walk from the Mets-Willets Pt stop to the golf center. Concession stand for $10 pitchers of beer and a game of mini golf. There aren’t any windmills or tubes to hit the ball through, but it was still cool. There’s a 2-for-1 coupon special here if you sign up. It was super cool walking around Corona Park late at night. It looked like a Boris Vallejo painting.

Flushing Golden Mall Food Stall Adventure

Headed out to Flushing to finally try the Golden Mall everyone always blogs about. The last time I tried to find it, I didn’t have an iPhone to tell me where to go and what I should eat. I still don’t have an iPhone, so it’s smart to go with Brian and Jimmy, who can speak Chinese really well and even read what’s on the menu. Although they now have a lot of English writing everywhere, probably because of all the blogging folks, so don’t be too scared.

First off, the place is amazing. Nothing I’ve really seen before. A bunch of tiny food stalls down in a basement all cramped together, making regional dishes that look exotic. This here is the food blogger’s wet dream.

We started off with Liang Pi Cold Skin Noodles ($4) and Savory Cumin Lamb Burger ($2.50) at Xi’an Famous Foods. The lamb burger is just as tasty as the newer Manhattan location. The Lian Pi Cold Skin Noodles have a great flavor, but why is it cold? I can imagine it tasting better hot.

Then we walked around and into the first stall, Cheng Du Tian Fu, specializing in Sichuan. Brian asked the lady what their best dishes were. She recommended the Beef Tripe with Hot Pepper Sauce and the Dumplings with Chili Sauce. Then she told us to go ahead and sit over at the Lanzhou Handmade Noodle stall where we were going to get some noodles and she’ll bring it over to us. We noticed a lot of people doing that –taking things from different stalls and enjoying them at any table.

I’m not a huge fan of beef tripe, but this was the best tripe ever. Thinly slice and so tender. I’d order this again. Then the dumplings came over and that was the most awesome dumplings in the world. There was some garlic butter on top, like the stuff they put on garlic knots at pizzerias. So good. I want to eat that now.

We also got a bowl of Mutton Handpulled Noodles from Lanzhou and some veggies from a neighboring stall. They were decent. As I was watching the guy hand pull our noodle, I realized that the way he was doing it is just making one super long noodle in our bowl. That’s interesting. You could really go to town with a giant slurp. Jimmy and I almost did Lady and the Tramp.

The plum drink was hardcore. Really strong. Couldn’t drink more than a few sips, but interesting enough to try.

Funny enough, we ran into Todd and Sirin there. But I guess it makes sense. New York is a big city, small world. So I guess that makes Flushing, Big Trouble in Little China.

Corner 28 Upstairs Restaurant

Matt got the cravings for some Flushing Chinatown food late in the evening. So he picked me up in the rain and we headed over to Corner 28. The downstairs $1 Peking Duck Bun window was closed and so was the cheap pick and point prepared steam tray selections. They have an upstairs sit-down restaurant.

The menu was a big book with photos of the dishes (like Denny’s) mixed with photos of their bubble tea drinks. Sorta difficult to find what you want, but I love to see what the food looks like. So I’ll take that. A late night menu with a lot of selections at $6.99. We chose the Chinese Sausage & Smoked Pork (possibly belly?) with Vegetables and Shrimp w/ Lobster Sauce. Matt also ordered the Shrimp Dumpling Noodle Soup and I got the Pumpkin & Clam Congee (rice porridge) at $3.50 each.

I been hankering some Chinese Sausage and vegetables for a while. It did the job. The Pumpkin & Clam Congee was interesting. I don’t think it would appeal to someone who’s used to bland or salty rice porridge, but might work for an American taste who’s never had congee. The Shrimp w/ Lobster Sauce was a little chalky, probably from the flour to thicken up the sauce. The food overall was good and affordable. The selection and quality is comparable to Congee Village House in Manhattan, but a little cheaper. And they’re opened until 1am.

We could barely finish it all. Partly because it was a lot of food and also because I had just turned Matt onto Paul McKenna’s weight loss hypnosis system. I might have screwed him with that. Look how skinny he is.

MKZ Day 3: Flushing Chinatown

The last adventure with the Lincoln MKZ. Before our trip out, Jody and Christa got sandwiches from an Italian deli in my hood. The big guy making Jody’s meatball sub seemed to get agitated when Jody asked for cheese after the guy already cut it. Well Jody was pushing it. Not going to name names of the deli in fear that I’d get my noggin beatin with a bat.

Back in the car, we realized it had air conditioned seats which was nice on this hot day. Also got to play around with the seat positioning, which included lower back support. It was cool. I couldn’t tell what it was doing at first because the seat wasn’t moving. I thought it was a back massager.

Headed to the Queens Museum of Art in Flushing to check out this cool Panorama exhibit, short scale model of the entire New York City. Jody was able to sneak some shots.

We finally figured out how to make the GPS work. Apparently the car can’t be moving when typing in the destination. The option was always disabled when we tried before while driving. This is our first time using GPS navigation and it was really cool. Only one day with it and we don’t know how we would live without it. It talked our way to Chinatown Flushing. My first time there. Seems a little more hectic than the Sunset Park version and a lot more storefront window food places. I got a Peking Duck on a steamed bun for $1 from Corner 88, spicy fish balls on a stick for $1 from AA Plaza, and pan fried dumplings 8 for $2 at Super Snack. I really want to try the point and pick take out boxes from Corner 88 some day.

We went to a grocery store there in Chinatown to pick up some salmon, shrimp, and veggies to bring back for a cook out. They had a bucket of live frogs that two little kids were kicking. The live bucket of turtles freaked Christa out. Who knew the spicy fish balls on a stick would be a precursor for the skewered shrimp and Rusty’s Cheetos on a stick?

Thank you Ford, Rachel and Social Media Group for the lovely car. Had a great weekend!
