City Kitchen – Times Square’s New Foodie Food Court

I stopped by City Kitchen’s opening party last week. It’s Times Square’s new foodie food court. They’ve got Dough Doughnuts, Sigmund’s Pretzels, Luke’s Lobster, ilili Box, Gabriela’s Tacos, Azuki Sushi, Wooly’s Shaved Ice and Ippudo’s Kuro Obi. Pretty cozy place to try a taste of some well-known NYC foodie spots.

The party was a lot of fun. The food was good. I really liked ilili Box’s Duck Schwarma.

I ate so much food that I wanted to barf. I had a date the next night and told her that. She thought it was TMI. I don’t think it was too TMI. Maybe if I said I was about to explode out the other end. That might be TMI.

New World Mall Flushing Food Court

We left the Mets game early and went a couple of stops East to Flushing to get some food. I had already eaten the Pat LaFrieda Steak Sandwich and had dinner plans soon. So I didn’t get anything, but luckily still got to taste everyone’s food.

We went to the New World Mall food court. So many choices of Asian food. I noticed this time, there were a lot more plastic and styrofoam containers versus real bowls and plates. I couldn’t wait to see what everyone got.

Todd and Daniel split a big bowl at LaoMa MaLaTang. It ended up costing $28 at $8/lb. I asked why they got so much food? He said because the Chinese lady was an asshole and just grabbed a bunch of meat and put in the bowl. Now he thinks all Chinese people are mean assholes.

It was really good though. Beef, Chicken and vegetables (mushrooms, broccoli, bok choy) cooked with mouth numbing spices. Really good. Just too much food. I saw two small girls sharing an even bigger bowl next to us. They were taking phone pics of it, obviously.

Sam and Dave got food at Conway BBQ. A BBQ Noodle Soup and a $5 Teriyaki Chicken with Rice. Much more affordable per person and pretty decent.

And the Matcha Green Tea was really tasty from Kung Fu Tea. Man, I would love to come back when I’m ready to eat a full meal.

South Street Seaport Food Court

I went out to the South Street Seaport last night to check out Best Coast. As you may know, the secret is to go to the food court in the mall to get a huge 32 oz beer (Bud at about $4.50) —at the Pizza or Seafood shop. I walked by all the other food counters. There were a number of them —Japanese, Chinese, Cajun, Seafood, American, but all of them were serving Chinese food with the same $6.99 pick two items over rice or lo mein noodles. Every one I pass, they were yelling at me to try their chicken sample on a toothpick. I felt scared with everyone yelling at me. I finally caved in for the bourbon chicken sample at Cajun Cafe. It was decent. I got that with shrimp and vegetables over lo mein. Yeah, tasted like Chinese-American Food Court food. I was wondering if I should’ve just gone to the Chinese place.

I watched a family go one-by-one tasting the chicken samples around the food court. They ended up getting their food at Cajun Cafe. That made me feel better about my decision …unless it was really all the same chicken and there was no reason to choose.

Matt’s Singapore Food Photos

My burger buddy, Matt Drdek, recently came back from a teaching gig in Singapore. He brought me back some food photos. I was hoping for a t-shirt.

Matt: “These are all from the Hawker Centers which are little food courts all over Singapore. Basically it’s about 100 or so little stands that specialize in a couple dishes. Indian, Thai, Chinese, you name it. One of the pics is the seating situation at the Centers. The last close up is of Chicken and Rice which sounds boring but is apparently a Singapore specialty. They do all sorts of weird stuff with the chicken. Boil it, then put it in ice, somehow it make the fat do weird things in the skin. Weird tasty things.”

Thanks Matt!
