Fish Bars at the Airports

At the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, they have Ivar’s Fish Bar right across from Anthony’s Fish Bar. I thought it was funny. Now I’m not familiar with these places. But after googling them just now, they are apparently well known Fried Fish & Chip places in Seattle and these are their airport outposts. My thoughts at the time: Ivar’s looks like fast food Captain D’s/Long John Silver. Anthony’s is fancier and is part of the bigger sit-down restaurant. Both about the same price, maybe even a few cents more at Ivar’s. So obvious choice went to Anthony’s for someone that doesn’t know who they are. Got the true cod fish and chips. I liked it. No complaints.

Layover in Los Angeles. My only options in my terminal was Burger King and Gladstone’s Fish. Great, another fish & chips place. The service reminded me of a crowded Denny’s. The table next to me to had this huge martini glass of fried fish & chips (I think in this case potato chips and not fries). It looked like they didn’t even touch it because it was so full, but they were just paying their bill (this is the one in the photo below). Then I saw 2-3 more of those huge fish & chips glasses being taken away from tables that were done. I thought something was fishy. Either they give you so much you can’t possibly finish or they’re just unbearable. I got their “famous” clam chowder. Tasted like thick starchy flour gravy. Burger King isn’t looking so bad now.

Chicken and Waffle Man

All food deserves a smiley face or at least an alien face. I got some fried chicken wings today at my local Chinese fast food —East Met West, strawberry jam, Aunt Jemima buttermilk waffles and Ms. Butterworth syrup. I don’t know which one is more politically incorrect. Well I always assumed Ms. B was white, but now looking at the bottle she is pretty dark. I suppose it’s not really a bad thing. Why can’t she be black mamy figure? Colonel Sanders is an old fart and the Hamburglar is a no good thief. Good thing they didn’t make him black.

I decided to try a new way of reheating the frozen waffles. Instead of sticking them in the oven where they come out hard and crunchy, I put them in the microwave to defrost and then put them on a frying pan to crisp up the edges. It leaves it soft and fluffy in the middle and toasty on the outside. Chicken and Waffle Man was happy. He’s supposed to be Chinese.

Wah Mei Pork Chop

Tried this hole in the wall for a fried pork chop over rice with some cabbage, pickled greens and brown pork sauce combination. $4.50 and hard boiled egg is 45cents. I was trying to decide if the trip was worth saving a dollar from the fried chicken at NYC Cravings Truck. Maybe if you’re on your way to buy a bubble blowing gun. As I’m writing this, I found a better post and pics than I could make about this place. So…

New Sea World Restaurant

Hot off the fish sandwich from SeaWorld restaurant in Tribeca, I headed to New Sea World in Murray Hill. They have Broasted chicken. What is Broasted chicken? It’s pressure cooked deep fried chicken. Looks and taste like fried chicken, but the meat isn’t so greasy. Is it worth a trip to try it? I think it tastes like fried chicken. But after reading this Washington Post article about Broasted chicken, you will want to go to there. It’s a rare find. Very fortunate that SeaWorld has it. Two pieces and potatoes $3.50. The Broasted potatoes taste like KFC potato wedges with a lot less flavor. At least they have fancy sauce to dip.

Sea World Restaurant

Took a nice stroll to look for a wok and a can opener. Walked through the Chelsea Market and somehow ended up in Tribeca/Chinatown and found Sea World Restaurant? Like Shamu? I always get confused with where Shamu’s eyes are. Anyway Sea World Restaurant is a fried seafood shack. I got the whiting fish sandwich for $4.50. Three big fillets on sliced bread. This loud skinny version of Redd Foxx came in after I ordered. He got really loud and confused. Then he thought I took his fish sandwich when mine came out. I never found my wok or can opener.

Fried Porgy

I always see people getting the fried porgy at the NY fried fish shops. They usually douse the thing in ketchup. This is my first. Five dolla. The head fell off in the deep fryer. Don’t worry. It’s hiding under the body.

Ramen & Friends: Cinco De Mayo

We planned on the outdoor patio at Papacito’s in Greenpoint, but it wasn’t open because it was raining all day. So we went across the street to Pio Pio Riko. The manager was selling us on the seafood hard. He ordered for us this big giant bowl of deep fried calamari, shrimp, fish, mussels, and crab called Jalea for our appetizers. It was mostly calamari. We were stuffed. I think he was planning to order us steaks for our entrees, but we passed. We went down the street to the Mark Bar and played a bunch of Buck Hunter. It was a great deal for $2 for 2 players for about 15mins of play. I totally turned into a dude. Some of us picked up a few tacos on the way. They had Vegan Setien Asada Tacos! That’s clever and whack.
