Tio Wally Eats America: Five Guys Burgers and Fries

I’m happy to have Tio Wally (long-time Me So Hungry reader) aboard to send in his eating adventures from across America. Here he is in Richland, Washington.

Greetings from Richland, Washington
GPS 46.258787, -119.310578 Elev. 518 feet

A recent YouGov survey found Burger King and Five Guys Burgers and Fries tied for “Best Burger.” Am I missing something? Methinks the BK crowd has never been to a Five Guys.

My daughter once described Five Guys as “The Subway of … wait, that’s a bad comparison. They’re the Quiznos … no, wait. You get to choose whatever you want on your burger. So they’re kind of like Chipotle but it’s burgers instead of burritos. They’re my favorite.”

With that in mind I went and met Five Guys and their burgers. And they are awesome. A little pricey but awesome. I loved it so much I had to go back again — I was actually jonesin’ for a FGs burger and I’m not a burger guy — with the kids (daughter, son-in-law and grandson) in tow for another fix.

She nailed the quintessence of the place with the selection aspect. There are 15 different options to put on your burger. It could conceivably take you some time to decide exactly what you want. That may be why FGs provides free salted in-the-shell peanuts to fiddle with while you figure it out. I thought that was a great touch because, well, I really like places classy enough to have peanut shells on the floor.

Once you opt your options your burger is made to order. When your burger is finished they put it on a square piece of aluminum foil (a wee bit of aluminium wrap if you’re from the Commonwealth), fold it diagonally corner-to-corner, then corner-to-corner again, give it a spin and, voilà, your burger is encased in what now roughly resembles a metal cylinder worthy of the prop shop for Plan 9 From Outer Space.

I ordered a regular Cheeseburger ($6.49), with mustard, ketchup, mayo, tomato, onion and grilled mushrooms. The older kids ordered Little Bacon Cheeseburgers ($5.79) with various fixins, and regular drinks ($2.19) they got from a high-tech sugar-water dispenser. We also got a regular order of fries ($3.49).

When ordering at Five Guys one needs to know basic things. For example, a regular burger is a double burger; the “little” is a single patty. And a regular size fry will feed three adults.

The fries are great. Skin-on, fried in peanut oil. That they’re served in a paper bag is a nice touch as it soaks up any excess oil. Five Guys may take great pride in their fries. They are great! They even have a sign on the wall informing you where that day’s spuds came from. (The aforementioned survey had McDouches, er, McDonalds fries at number one. Baffling.) And the kids did something I’d never seen before. They added malt vinegar to the little cup of ketchup to cut the sweetness. Brilliant, I thought. And incredibly tasty! Ah, the wonders of ketchup.

The burgers are, I think, nonpareil. All the toppings are free, the burgers are cooked to perfection, the veggies are fresh, ripe, and they have grilled mushrooms — Grilled Mushrooms! It’s impossible to go wrong. But I did, of course. I forgot to ask them to grill the bun. I suspect they would do that for me. Next time.

My son-in-law eats FGs burgers with a knife and fork. He says they’re messy. There could be a reason he thinks this but I dunno. My Punkin’ on the other hand holds her burger with two hands, just like dear old dad. Of course, to be fair, her beard is removable.

I’ve had many burgers in my life, including Back Yard Burgers, which are very similar to Five Guys’, and In•N•Out Burgers. I like FGs burgers better; I’d like them more if they were about a dollar cheaper. I’m still baffled that Five Guys tied with Burger King in the survey; third place for burgers, after Wendy’s(?), was In•N•Out Burgers).

While I may think Five Guys has a better burger than Burger King, the thick, creamy, malty goodness of an In•N•Out milkshake (not rated) was noticeably missing. Oh well.

And so we roll.

The Gander’s Sirloin with Fries and Bone Marrow Mayo

I was looking at this Thrillist photo of The Gander’s Dry-Aged Sirloin. I couldn’t stop looking at it. I kept IMing it to my friend.

I noticed that the lunch price is much cheaper for this steak is $28 vs $40. I figured it must be smaller. I was right. But I think they are portioning the lunch size wrong. Instead of making it thinner, they should keep the same thickness and give me half. I might be wrong, but the thinner steak looks weak and I don’t think it tastes as good. You don’t get that nice medium-rare middle, because it’s so thin, it’s cooked through. It was topped with rich Garlic Butter.

It included Hen of the Woods mushroom. I never heard of it, but it is interesting …like eating an edible pine cone.

Fries were good. It came with Bone Marrow Mayo, which doesn’t really tastes like much …maybe a little buttery. I preferred the ketchup or the Bone Marrow Mayo with ketchup.

The Gander also has complimentary Parker House Rolls. Free! Not like John Dory Oyster Bar where’s $4.50, although those are fucking good. These rolls came with salted butter. I love salted butter.

I felt like ate a lot of butter.

BXL Zoute’s Lunch Prix Fixe

Went to BXL Zoute for their $17 lunch pre fixe. Seems like a pretty good deal.

Choice of:
Soup of the Day, House Salad or Terrine Maison

And Choice Of:
1Lb Moules, Sandwich of the Day or Omelette

And
1 Stella Artois, House Wine or Soft Drink

I got the Terrine Maison. Here’s a tip. Get that if you are on the fence with that or a salad. Because it comes with salad! I saw a guy next to me order the house salad and it looked like mine minus the Terrine Maison.

The Mussels were good, but the broth wasn’t as drinkable on its own like I expected.

The fries were great!

They have All You Can Eat Mussels on Sundays and Mondays by the way.

Fatburger in NYC

Well I never heard of Fatburger before. I’m all East Coast. They just opened one of these West Coast burger joints this week in Murray Hill …the first of several to open in New York.  They’re even opening up some in India with lamb burgers. I kind of wished they had lamb burgers here.

My beef burger was pretty good though. I like how you can add a fried egg. Mine wasn’t runny though, unfortunately. Also unfortunate was the wait. I assumed it to be quicker for fast food, but they are cooked to order and there was a line of customers. But they have a bar serving beer and wine while you wait.

They have several sizes of burgers. Medium, Large, XXL …and XXXL, which if you can finish, you get your name on the wall. I got the smallest one and was satisfied with just eating half. I put the rest in a bag along with some Fat Fries (steak fries) and was going to eat it later. But I went out to buy some underwear and socks and realized I was smelling up the stores. So I gave it to a homeless guy. He looked so psyched. I think he knew about Fatburger.

Red Star Bar Food

We went to Red Star Bar in Greenpoint for a Sunday night comedy show. This is when we saw Reggie Watts three times in one week.

I’ve been curious about the wings here since they hold the annual Best Wings In Brooklyn Competition here. So I was glad to see that Elissa ordered the wings. Their Raspberry Wings won a People’s Choice last year. I don’t know. They were okay and sweet. I think I like their regular wings better though.

The Pub Fries look cool with a heavy load of melted cheddar cheese, bacon, scallions and sour cream. I think it needed some sauce though. Like gravy. Amirite?

The sliders were the best of the order. I liked dipping the slider in the cheese sauce.

The next Best Wings In Brooklyn Competition is a month away –March 16th. Get there early. The lines were long last time.

Smithfield’s Chip Butty (French Fry Sandwich)

After our successful UCB improv graduation class show yesterday, we headed over to Smithfield bar for drinks and food. I ordered the Chip Butty ($8) which was french fries over buttery bread. I asked the waitress what that was and she said it was a french fry sandwich. Okay.

It came out and it really was a french fry sandwich. It was actually pretty good though. I think it was the buttery bread that made it. I haven’t had buttered white bread in so long. I was sort of impressed and it wasn’t as dry as I thought it would be. Again, it was probably the butter that kept it from being too dry. Ketchup also helped, but I don’t know if it made it taste any better.

I never heard of this Chip Butty, but there is a wikipedia page.

I’m proud of my classmates. We put on an awesome show for a 101 level. One of my classmates found this on Twitter right after our show. It’s Vinny from Jersey Shore. I’m confused. Did he think he was in our class?

…he probably had his show right after ours. That’d be cool if he’s in my 201 class.

Allswell’s Burger and Fries & The House Party Art Show

Last night, there was an art opening in Williamsburg —The House Party by Andrew Ohanesian at The Boiler. The guy built a suburban house inside of a big warehouse. Everything was really detailed as if it was from the late 90’s – early 2000’s. Even a working toilet. People did keg stands. I hung out mostly in the bedroom, playing Grand Theft Auto with a 5 year old kid while some dude was smoking a joint in the corner.

Then on our way home, we stopped in at Allswell …which used to be that polish restaurant, Raymund’s Place. This place is much hipper. I got a burger and fries ($14). Dang, really good burger and I loved the big steak fries. And they gave me a thing of mayonnaise. Every place should give me mayonnaise. I love mayonnaise. Good way to end the night. Allswell that ends well.

Sel de Mer’s Lobster and Fish and Chips

Oh man. Sam was back in town and we grabbed dinner at Sel de Mer. They had steamed lobster on the menu again ($17) with fries. Got that and the Beer Battered Fish & Chips ($15). We split that shit. So dang good. My hands were a mess. I dipped my fries into the lobster head. Green gunk is the new ketchup.

I live so close to this place. I don’t know why I don’t eat here more often.
