Checkers’ Fully Loaded Fries

After the Ramen and Friends baby shower, I just had to stop by Checkers in Brooklyn Heights to relive my college days riding my bike home with a 99cent Spicy Chicken Sandwich. It isn’t 99cents anymore, at least at this New York location. I suppose it’s understandable, since I’m thinking back 8 years ago in Gainesville, Florida. At $2.69, it’s not as memorable as it was back then or at the Atlanta airport, when we missed our plane because I couldn’t find the Chic-fil-A.

What was memorable was the Fully Loaded Fries. Checkers seasoned fries with cheddar cheese, bacon and ranch dressing. Hot dang. This is one big pile of awesome-mess. I think it ended up tasting like a Wendy’s baked potato with the same fixings. Makes sense.

Five Guys’ Burger All The Way

Finally got around to trying Five Guys since Obama. I was wary of the free unlimited toppings, but I knew I wanted it all. I just wasn’t sure if they were going to give me stink eye. Been wary of unlimited toppings ever since my band almost broke up in New Haven because I wanted every single topping on the free pizza we were getting. Well Five Guys didn’t give me the stink eye and we didn’t almost break up. Burgers “All-The-Way” is actually programmed in the register.

(Toppings: Mayo, Relish*, Onions*, Lettuce, Pickles, Tomatoes, Grilled Onions, Grilled Mushrooms, Ketchup, Mustard, Jalapeno Peppers*, Green Peppers, A-1 Sauce*, Bar-B-Q Sauce*, Hot Sauce*) *Upon request only.

Now that I see the asterisks on the menu, I don’t think I got those. If you say “everything,” you would think you’d get EVERYTHING. Isn’t that what I requested? That’s what I wanted. I guess I have to request all of them in addition to “everything.” Maybe they would have given me stink eye.

However, Obama is right. Five Guys is good. People should stop comparing it to In-N-Out though …because they should compare it to Wendy’s. Five Guys tastes like a better Wendy’s burger. I can’t point my finger on why, but it does. I almost want to say it’s the ketchup, but that sounds silly. The Cajun Fries were heavily coated in Old Bay-type seasoning. I love Old Bay, but maybe there’s too much on the fries.

Afterwards, Matt showed me some puppies in the window down the street. Then we walked by Waverly Diner and I looked at the people eating in the window. I almost tapped.

Mulholland’s Chili & Cheese Waffle Fries

This monster is the Double Chili & Cheese Waffle Fries (Mulholland’s homemade chili, loaded with thick cut bacon, sausage, beef, kidney beans and tons of spices, topped with melted nacho cheese served over crispy waffle fries). I’ve mentioned like their chili. This dish is the closest thing to Waffle House’s Double Hash Browns All-The-Way that I know of in New York. It made all the DirectTV satellite sports outages during that rainy night almost tolerable. Go Gators?

Coco 66 – Fries and Sir Frog

This is from our show last week with our friends, Sir Frog, at Coco66. Got some fries and chip with guacamole ($4 each). They have specials like half-price chicken or pulled pork sandwiches on Thursdays and $1 oysters at happy hour. You can order food from either Coco 66 (the bar/music room) or Coco 68 (the restaurant next door).

I wasn’t sure if it was weird that my ex-gf jumped on stage and took my mic to sing on one of our songs. At least it sounded cool.

Eurotrash Food Truck – Fishin & Chips

Met up with the Brooklyn Fishing Derby gang at the N.5th and Kent Pier –beautiful and hidden behind the Dubai-esque sky rise condos and construction. A good amount of folks fishing there with kids running around and hipsters sunbathing. Unfortunately they’ve just closed down this pier for the rest of October, suspiciously when the fishing derby ends. I wonder what would happen if the derby ran a few months longer.

Russ and I had a few drinks and sportsmans at the Levy afterwards. There’s a food truck called Eurotrash right next door that I’ve never seen before. It’s in a lot that looks like it’s for a junkyard, small warehouse, an apartment or apparently a recording studio? I heard some drunk girl rave about about the fish and chips and it’ll only be fitting after a day of fishing. It was really good. The fries were Belgium style frites. I’m curious about the meatballs and Bangers and Mash.

Bar Matchless

I went to Bar Matchless a few times this past week to check out my friends’ bands —Clinical Trials, Prince Rupert’s Drops, RIBS. I was standing in the bar talking to my friends with my hands behind my back like an old man. Embarrassingly, a girl bumped into me and her vagina went right into my cupped hand. More embarrassingly, I didn’t know what it was and thought someone was handing me something, so I instinctively squeezed a little –like when you put your finger into a baby’s hand. I turned around and realized what happened. It was only a little awkward when I said hi. They have a big plate of fries for $4. Sweet deal w/ fancy sauce.

Absinthe Brasserie & Bar

After Aaron & Kristy’s wedding, Pavan, Sarah and I stumbled into Absinthe where their executive chef is a Top Chef contestant. We had the french fries, the summer squash & corn flatbread and the spicy fried chickpeas, which I don’t remember ordering. I really can’t remember if I liked the food. I was pretty toasted from the reception and all the dancing. I do remember I thought the flatbread tasted like pizza. Pizza taste good, right?

Frying Pan on the Hudson

After work Summer time drinks with friends from work at the Frying Pan barge & boat located on the west side of Manhattan. A beautiful day for food and drinks on the water. After one drink, I felt pretty tipsy and then remembered that I was on the water. It gets crowded pretty quickly after work, so best to get you a bucket of Coronas and sit back. You order your food with any of the bartenders and then wait to look for your number like kino to pick it up at the food counter. It’s all pretty looking food, but pretty average tasting. They do have all the condiments to make your own fancy sauce. I did a ketchup, mayo, cock sauce (Sriracha) combination. It makes everything taste better, except strawberries. I don’t know why I even tried that. I enjoyed myself out there. Great summertime spot. Thanks for setting this up, Kristen.
