The Bounty (Greenpoint)

I was wandering around hungry last night and poked my head in at the Bounty in Greenpoint. I’m glad I did.

I had the Lamb Ribs (slow roasted with black garlic. cauliflower, radicchio, arugula, pickled raisins, polenta $26). So good. I was warned that it was heavy/fatty. But very moist and flavorful.

Good choice. “Job well done,” I said to myself.

Calexico’s Burrito Bowl

My workplace forced me to take a vacation day because I hadn’t been using them. So I decided to get a massage and went to Calexico nearby in Greenpoint while I waited for my appointment.

Pork Burrito Bowl - Calexico Greenpoint

Ordered the Chipotle Pork Burrito Bowl ($9) with guac ($3) and crack sauce ($1). That bowl was delicious. Yummy!

Then I went to my massage and I realized –man, I really don’t like massages. They tickle and they hurt. Why do people like that? I just want someone to scratch my back softly. I was telling my friend about this and he sent me a link where hot girls rub their naked oiled bodies against you as a massage. I don’t know if I’m ready for that, but that sure sounds like it hurts a lot less.

Northside Bakery (Greenpoint)

My friend Jody told me a few months ago that he found a place that has awesome Polish food in his neighborhood of Greenpoint. He thought it was called Nassau Diner and it was on Nassau Ave at Humboldt St. I was I like I don’t think those street intersect. But turns out they do. Todd sent me this list of Greenpoint cheap eats on Brokelyn.com and it had this place, but really called Northside Bakery (Division of Old Poland Foods LLC). Then when I was going to check it out, Todd was already there just finishing up his meal. LOL.

I tasted their White Borscht soup that had gotten cold. It was meh. But I went on their recommendation and got the red stuffed cabbage (Guwumpkis) that were only $2.50 or $3.00. Really cheap. Then I added a side of beets and cucumber salad. The total jumped up to $5.99. Still a good deal.

The Guwumpkis was pretty darn good. I ate it all up. Also, there seems like a lot more hot Polish girls in the area.

Five Leaves Brunch

This time we went to Fives Leaves in Greenpoint early, around 10am. We thought we could beat the brunch rush. Nope. Still crowded. I think it was around a 20 minute wait. We stuck with it.

Pretty good brunch. I got the Moroccan Scramble – merguez sausage, scrambled eggs with spiced chickpeas, crushed avocado & grilled sourdough ($12). I enjoyed it.

Battle of the Sushi Boats in Greenpoint

We finally cracked the code on Sushi boats. Where a Sushi Boat for Three at Sakura 6 is cheaper than a Sushi Boat for Two at Sapporo Haru, you actually get a ton more food at Sapporo Haru in the boat for two.

SUSHI BOAT COMPARISON

It’s funny, because Todd and I have been eating numerous sushi boats all over and we always thought Sakura 6 was the best. But last week during the 4th of July, Sakura 6 was unfortunately closed. So we went to Sapporo Haru and got a sushi boat for two, but it was surprisingly huge. I thought they made a mistake and made one for four. So yesterday, we went to Sakura 6 for a boat for three. We went through it quick, but still satisfied.

Then somehow we decided to go to get another sushi boat at Sapporo Haru. I think it was all the free sake talking. We were like let’s just get a boat for two to share. We really just wanted to drink more. But it was insane how big it came out again. It wasn’t a fluke. Sure, it costs more ($55 vs a boat for 3 at Sakura 6 for $49), but it’s way so much more food and it looks better. I guess you get one less soup or salad. But the salad is so much bigger there too.

Both places give you free unlimited hot sake. Maybe Sakura 6 seems a little more generous. But I feel like Sapporu Haru is the clear winner in this boat race.

Dang, that was pretty stupid eating two sushi boats in a row.

Amber Steakhouse

So I owed Sam some meat for winning last season’s Fantasy Football, which ended over six months ago. I figured I should I finally pay up. I took him to Amber Steakhouse in Greenpoint. It seemed to be very affordable, easy to get a table and they accept credit cards …which all seem hard to find in NYC for some reason. And this place was pretty awesome.

We got a 48 oz Porterhouse for Two ($72), which came with two potatoes (we chose Mashed and Home Fries). Plus we got a side of Creamed Spinach ($5). The steak was really nice. So big …it was really difficult to finish, but we did it. We also really liked the sides.

This place is great. I figure it would have cost around 50% more anywhere else in NYC for all this food. I don’t know if the steak is as good as Peter Luger’s, but it’s really good at this price and convenience (easy to be seated and takes credit cards).

Why don’t more expensive places take credit cards in Brooklyn? I don’t get it.

Manhattan Inn’s Brunch

We were out to get brunch in Greenpoint, but an hour wait at Five Leaves. It’s usually hard to find a nice brunch place that’s not crowded. But we walked over to Manhattan Inn and we weren’t sure if they were open because no one was there. I figured brunch would be pretty good since I’ve been there for good cocktails at night. And yeah, it was pretty awesome.

Nice quiet place with a piano player for our entertainment.

Todd got the Burger. I got the Biscuits & Gravy and Eggs , with a side of Hash Browns and a Bloody Mary. Really good.

It eventually filled up with more customers, but still plenty of tables. I don’t understand why it wasn’t more full. Good food, spacious, easy to get a table, piano entertainment, air conditioned. But I guess if it was packed and had a wait, I might not have felt the same. Here’s to easy brunch.

Wasabi Restaurant – Free Unlimited Hot Sake

I really can’t stop eating sushi and free hot sake. Todd and I went back out to Greenpoint to try another sushi/free sake place. We first went to Kyoto Sushi. They had a sign for free sake and Todd even called to confirm. But then I overheard that the table next to us were going to be charged for their second carafe. Turns out you only get one free. So we left. I think that couple were jealous that we left. For real, how do you think you can survive as a sushi restaurant in Greenpoint without free unlimited hot sake?

So we were about to go back to Sakura 6, but saw that Wasabi also had free sake. It turned out to be unlimited! They should really advertise it better online. It’s hard to find out which places are really free unlimited hot sake.

Wasabi didn’t have a sushi boat. So we got a Su-sa-ma Platter (for 2-3 people $49). It was a lot of food, but we somehow finished it.

They were very generous on refilling our hot sake. Even taking our half filled ones and filling it back up. Also generous on giving us wasabi when we asked for more. Looks like a broken off penis statue.

12 Wasabi Restaurant

On the menu, there was a Bedford and Greenpoint roll. Although I’m not sure what makes it Bedford and Greenpoint. Oh, the Greenpoint has avocado.
