Queen of Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant

Ooh man, Queen of Sheba is so good. I got the Taste of Sheba combination platter (tibs wot (9) menchet abesh wot (10), menchet alecha (11), gomen besega (15), bozena shiro (16), wot (1), and yebeg alecha (2)) for $24. I don’t know what all those numbers mean on the menu and I don’t know what those dishes are. Too much work to search for each description. Anyway Sheba tastes delicious!

But one thing! I know you traditionally eat Ethiopian food with your hands at a Ethiopian restaurant. But I’m thinking it could be just as good with utensils …and your fingers won’t be smelling like Ethiopian food the next couple of days …which isn’t a horrible thing. But what if you or your friend just took a dump and wiped their butt? I don’t care how good we just washed our hands. I kind of don’t want us to be eating with our hands on the same platter.

Larb Ubol – Isan Authentic Thai

Yoshie had a Ramen and Friends lunch at Larb Ubol in Hell’s Kitchen. She and Rob like the chef’s other restaurants in Queens.

I got lost because there were so many Thai restaurants in this area on 9th Ave. I remembered it had Larb in the name though. I always wanted to know what Larb was. I’ve seen it on menus. Turns out it’s minced meat salad. I tried the Chicken Larb. Kind of tasted like Chicken Salad …you know, like if you got a chicken salad sandwich?

I felt like Homer Simpson saying, “Larb! Larb! Larb! Larb!” in silly melody. I don’t know if he ever said that, but it seems like it he would.

I liked the Roast Pork and Crispy Pork a lot. That was good.

Gyu-Kaku Japanese Restaurant

Every Tuesday for the past few weeks, I’ve been going to Gyu-Kaku in Hell’s Kitchen for a quick beer before my acting class. They have a $6 Mega Beer (25oz of Kirin Draft sometimes in a icy cold mug). I’ve learned that one of those big beers is the perfect amount before a class. Anything more is like “whoa, what’s going on?” Although my teacher has asked me twice if I was drunk or on drugs.

The happy hour at the bar is until 7pm. You pretty much get everything 50% off. So most other regular sized beers are $3 or a Lychee Martini is $5.

They also have a happy hour food menu at the bar until 6pm. A lot of small plates to share. The Sukiyaki Bibimbap is pretty big though ($6). I didn’t finish it, but I was full on beer. They bring out a super hot stone clay bowl and mix up your Bibimbap. It got crispy. It was pretty decent. I love the presentation …although, I think I like my rice softer rather than crispy and stuck in my teeth.

Another time, I got a Ginger Chicken ($5). Pretty good pieces of fried breaded chicken cutlet with some ginger flavor.

I regret never have gotten the Gyu-Sliders. Those look good on the menu.

I’ve been here when it was crazy at the bar and other times when it was easy. But it’s a good place to get a happy hour drink and not be at a real bar. It helps me think I’m not an alcoholic.

Daisy May’s BBQ USA’s Texas Style Chili

This one’s from several months back when I took a Skillshare class about Youtube Strategies at the ad offices of Ogilvy & Mather (on the West side). It was cool. I was hoping to see a few Don Drapers.

I was hungry after and Daisy May’s was right across the street. I had ribs from them at a BBQ fest a long time ago and they were pretty good. I thought this place would be a sit-down restaurant, but it’s a counter and then a dining room.

I got one of the cheapest things – “Bowl O’ Red” Texas Style Chili ($10.50). It looks small, but it’s all meat –12 ounces of meat and some gravy. The first few bites were great. Tender beef chunks. But after a while, it’s just too much meat and the chili gravy gets too salty. It comes with a tortilla, onions, cheese and sour cream.

This day was sort of memorable since it marked when I really got interested in learning again and bettering myself. Since then, I’ve taken acting and improv classes and just today I signed up for a class on Body Language. Pretty good deal too. $29 on LivingSocial. I can’t wait to find out who the fuck’s been lying to me.

Ember Room Opening Night Party

Here are photos from the grand opening party at Ember Room, a new American-Asian Barbecue restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen. The oven with the spinning grill was awesome. Glad they put that out in front where people can see it. I’m not sure how the menu will be, but whatever they gave me to eat was pretty awesome.

The menu at the Ember Room was created by celebrity chefs, Todd English and Ian Chalermkittichai. I remember Todd English way back when he was the Iron Chef American on Iron Chef USA, the first American adaptation of Iron Chef on the UPNstarring William Shatner as the chairman. This version didn’t last long though. Only two episodes were produced according to Wikipedia. I wish they moved Shatner over to the Food Network’s version. He was a badass chairman. FYI, the current chairman is not the real nephew of original Japanese chairman, Takeshi Kaga. It’s all a terrible lie.

Anyway, I remember Todd English being the alpha male all-American Iron Chef. I think he flipped a spatula or something and the audience went nuts. There’s a photo of him on the Ember Room website. I’m not sure, but is that duck face?
