Nyonya Curry Fish Head Casserole

I was watching some Anthony Bourdain and saw him eating some curry fish head. It looked so good. So I went out to find some in NYC.

I ended up at Nyonya in Chinatown/Little Italy. It’s a solid affordable Malaysian restaurant. I’ve been here once before about 5 years ago. It seems pretty popular among younger Asian adults.

The Nyonya Curry Fish Head Casserole is $19.95. There’s actually several other fish head casseroles at this price on the menu. I went with the one named after the restaurant.

The curry sauce was awesome. The actual fish head was a lot of work to eat actually. If I’m ever craving for this flavor, I’d probably go with non-fish head. Actually just the mixed vegetable curry casserole at $13.50. The curry sauce is the star.

Sanur Indonesian & Malaysian Food

We hit up Sanur for some Indonesian and Malaysian food in Chinatown. I’ve only previously gone to the upper floor for take-out and always loved it. This time we went down into the basement for table service.

Oh man, it was so good. We got Roti Canai, Satay Chicken Skewers with Peanut Sauce, Curry Beef Stew, Pork with Ginger, and sauteed Bitter Melon.

The Curry Beef Stew was my favorite. The Roti Canai was good, but I’ve had better.

New Malaysia Restaurant

I met up with friends for pre-partying dinner on New Years Eve at New Malaysian Restaurant (where I’ve had Ducks Blood) in the Chinatown Arcade on Bowery. Yes, start off with Roti Canai. I like it! …pancake roti bread with lovely curry chicken sauce.

I also ordered the Ipoh Rojak appetizer, which I was thinking was this Malaysian Popiah. Turned out totally different, but really good. It was cucumbers and butternut squash with peanut and some kind of sauce that made it taste a little sweet.

Marcellus ordered the Indian Mee Goreng. He asked the waitress if there was meat in it. She said no. When he got it, there was shrimp all in it. He asked the waitress again. “I thought this had no meat?” She said, “Yeah, no meat. Just seafood.” That’s funny. That reminds me how some restaurants you order Vegetable Fried Rice or Lo Mein and there is no vegetable in it. They just call it that because there is no meat.

I liked my Curry Hainanese Chicken Noodle Soup. Great creamy broth. Took a long time to get. I think they forgot.

The prices are good if you stick with the Noodle Soups, Fried Noodles and Lunch menu (which you can still order at night).

After dinner, we made our way to separate parties. Some of us headed to my friends Dave and Janet’s party. That was a lot of fun. I saw a black and white movie on the TV and I asked if it was “My So Called Life,” when you know I meant “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

After the party, we went downstairs to the bar where I came across the Williamsburg Empanada guy. I couldn’t believe he was out on doing his thing on New Years Eve. I guess it’s a good night for business, but I hope he got some partying in himself. I got a beef empanada with hot sauce ($2). It did good.

On my way home, I passed by a couple of groups where there was one drunk asshole who seemed to try to harass me for either being a hipster or Chinese. That’s weird. Don’t they know they’re partying in Williamsburg, Brooklyn?

When I got home, I looked in the mirror and noticed I was wearing a stupid glow necklace that whole time. Shit. I would’ve harassed me too.

Another thing happened when I was walking home that night. I don’t know if it’s appropriate to talk about on a food blog, but it’s been in running through my head the last couple of days and you guys know this website is pretty much my Livejournal. Here goes…

As I passed by this garage, I heard someone talking, like whispering. Then I saw a guy on all fours, back turned to me, in a corner next to a car. I thought that was weird. So I walked back and this time, the guy turned around to look at me. I had to walk back again to get home and he was still looking at me.

I thought that was just weird. Then I heard some more talking. I knew in my gut something wasn’t right. Like maybe there was a girl under him? It took a few seconds to get the nerve to walk back again, but it felt like minutes.

This time, the guy and a girl were standing up. Okay, there was a girl there. I asked, “Everything all cool?” The guy said, “Yeah, it’s all cool.” I wanted the girl to respond, but she said to the guy what sounded like, “Can’t I just get a hug?” …as if they were having an argument and she just wanted it to be over. From that point, I assumed they knew each other and left.

It still bothered me that night and the next day when I told Rusty. Then he went out to the bodega and called to tell me that there is crime tape and police guarding that very spot in the garage. I went to talk to the cops and detective. I don’t know the whole story, but it seems like the girl is telling a story that doesn’t quite fit with mine. Actually, they don’t know who the guys is, which is weird to me because I thought they knew each other, like they were a couple.

So it still bothers me that there was an incident and I don’t know if I could have done more or what. The cops and detective seemed to be very thankful that I came forward. I know my friends think I did a lot more than what a lot of people would do in that situation. I get that. But it still bothers me.

[Update: The TV News said the guy had a gun.]

Cafetasia’s Malaysian Laksa Noodles

Suzy Q was in town and we ate at Cafetasia. It’s kinda like Sea or Planet Thai …trendy Asian Fusion packed with college students. I love the Malaysian Laksa Noodles with the coconut milk based broth. It’s the best thing. Although I haven’t had anything else on the menu, I can’t imagine anything being better.

Overseas Taste Malaysian Restaurant

After a Marcellus Hall & the Hostages set, we went out for Malaysian food at Overseas Taste Restaurant. Surprisingly good food here. Maybe the Princess Bean Curd dish was pricey at $15 for vegetables, but the other dishes were affordable.

I got the Double Boiled Chicken Thigh in Chinese Herb Noodle Soup ($7.50). Tasted medicinal, but really good at the same time. It made me feel warm and healthy …and I’m sure it was good for my yeet hay (in Chinese, means “hot air”. Something that makes the body sick. There’s no real medical translation in English. Something that I don’t think ABC’s or WebMD knows what it really is, except it’s something my parents told me I have when I’m sick and ate too many fried foods.)

I really liked the peanut satay sauce. That was my favorite flavor of the night. Although that probably gave me a lot of yeet hay.

Taste Good Malaysian Cuisine

Went out with Ramen and Friends to Elmhurst, Queens to eat Malaysian food at Taste Good …and it tasted really good. One of the best group meals I’ve ever had. We ordered a lot of food and it was only $12 each after tip. Luckily it was BYOB …beers next door at Hong Kong Supermarket. My favorite dish was the one Joe ordered, Indian Rojak Mee, which is described on the menu as “a ‘mamak’ hawker’s special.” The sauce was nice and sweet. The Singapore Kari Laksa was delicious too –one of New York Magazine’s recent Fifty of the City’s Tastiest Soups.

New Malaysia

Dinner at New Malaysia with Rob and Yoshie. Always start out with roti canai. I love that chicken curry sauce. Then happened to get more of it in my Nasi Lemak (coconut flavored rice with belacan anchovy, chicken, hard boiled egg & peanuts). I figure next time I’ll just get a big bowl of that stuff by ordering the Curry Chicken.

Then we went to the CMJ party lounge to check out Lavalier. It was supposed to be a pizza party, but I didn’t see any pizza …just PureVolume cellphone skins. I was successful acting really retarded with the cellphone skin girls and they just kept giving me more of them. That happens a lot.

Afterward, we went to my housewarming party that I was supposed to be at. Now after three years, we were finally having a housewarming. Then we surprised Rob with a surprise birthday party. It worked out well. I was even surprised.

Ramen & Friends: New Malaysia

Down in Chinatown at New Malaysia for some Asam Laksa and Ducks Blood. Gotta try more types of animal blood. Rob & Yoshie pointed out how duck’s blood is in the vegetarian section of the menu. Funny. I love me the roti! Then over to Egg Custard King for dessert. I got the green cheese cake. It was green, but not sure if it was cheese cake. I love dan tat!
