Lorimer Market’s Meatball Hero

On my way to yesterday’s Brooklyn Comics & Graphics Festival, I stopped by Lorimer Market for lunch. Todd’s been raving about their sandwiches. Even goes so boldly to say it’s WAAAAY better than Graham Ave Meats. I’m thinking of ordering a Party Sub from Lorimer Market for next week’s party, so I figured I’d try it out first.

First impression: nice and clean place. The meat section looks really good and clean. I’m definitely going try my next steak there. Sorry, Mario.

I ordered Todd’s favorite, the meatball hero (named filomena on the menu). Yeah, great big meatballs! You can see the herbs.

$6.95 exactly for the sandwich. I would have been satisfied with half, but I stuffed myself all the way. Way to get fat.

St. Anselm’s Lamb Saddle Straddle

I started last night off at the Orchard CMJ party at Brooklyn Bowl. Ted Leo and Royce da 5’9 were playing. There was a British band called the Scoundrels (think Spoon meets John Mayer) that sang a song that goes “Makes Me Horny”. I was wondering if it was for real, because they didn’t look like a joke band. But then they played a song called “Sexy Weekend” and then I kinda liked them.

I ditched the show and headed off in the rain to the Knitting Factory to see my friends’ band play. Dinner first at St. Anselm next door. I’ve heard this place is the big shit now revamped as a steakhouse. I came here for a year ago for the Boar Belly Sandwich and Fried Pickles. There was no one in there that last time. Now it was packed.

Prices seemed reasonable. The Butcher’s Steak everyone was getting was $15 and looked pretty good.

I asked if they had a Ribeye for one (noted for two on the menu). The waiter asked and came back to tell me the smallest they could give me was 53 ounces. He kinda egged me on to be that guy everyone would be talking about. I’m into that, but I can only handle doing two or three stupid things a week.

I saw the Bone-in Ribeye on the grill. It was insane. I can understand why the smallest was 53 ounces …and meant for 2+.

The waiter led me to the Lamb Saddle. Fuck. He didn’t do me wrong. That Lamb Saddle was amazing. Better than the lamb saddle (Mutton Chop) at Keens. Having a bite on the fatty end was some of the best meat I’ve ever put in my mouth.

The Lamb Saddle ended up costing $40.25, which is a pretty decent price for what it was. Spinach Gratin was good too.

St. Anselm – 355 Metropolitan Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11211

Afterwards I had a blast at the Knitting Factory with The Berreracudas and my favorite band from the 4Knots Festival, Davila 666.

I Cooked This Porterhouse Steak

I asked Mario from Mario & Sons to cut me a Porterhouse Steak 1″ thick. It was probably closer to 2″, but I trust him more about meat than anyone else. So all was good.

I preheated the oven to 350 degrees, while I prepped the meat with olive oil, salt and pepper. You’re supposed to have had let the meat sit out to room temperature. Then I put it in a hot pan with the hood fan going and fried each side for about 3 minutes each. I put it in the oven for about 5 mins. Pull it out and let it rest for another 5. Came out medium. Still very tasty. I think next time, I’m going to skip the oven and go little more pink and bloody.

Steak Truck’s Habanero Steak Sandwich

Yesterday was the first time I’ve seen the Steak Truck in our hood on Park Ave and 23rd St. It’s normally a Midtown thing. No one seemed to care. A couple of guys looking for Pepsi ended up getting Cokes. That was about it.

I ordered the Habanero Steak Sandwich. The nice cook asked me if I wanted it super spicy. Sure, whatever that means. He charged me $5 even though the menu said $6. It was probably the spiciest sandwich someone else has ever made for me. My lips were burning and chapped afterwards. Like a Philly Cheesesteak with Velveeta cheese and hot green sauce.

That www.steaktruck.com on their truck doesn’t work. And according to Midtown Lunch, it hasn’t in three years.

All that green from the truck and the sandwich sorta matched my new K-Swiss Tubes. It was fitting that I was going to see Kenny Powers at the Apple Store that night.

Les Halles Downtown

Ross is getting married and we had a bachelor dinner for him at Les Halles (Downtown), known for Anthony Bourdain. I had the Planche de Grillades for one (lamb chop, hanger steak, merguez, steak, thick cut bacon, french fries, roasted tomatoes, provençal dressing; $28). That’s quite a sampler platter. I liked all my meat except one steak was a lot better the other steak (the one that comes with the Steak Frites). That steak (of the Steak Frites) is not that good. I asked for a side of béarnaise sauce for my fries. Yeah, that’s good.

The restaurant is sort of underwhelming for being associated with Anthony Bourdain, but very affordable for a New York steakhouse.

Congratulations Ross & Rebecca! …BTW, here’s the Michael Bay version of the meal, using the Michael Bayifier.

Kate’s Birthday and a Giant Ass Steak

Rooftop birthday for Kate on Jenny and Brian’s rooftop. The most amazing piece of beef steak and ham steak I’ve ever seen –from the Meat Hook. Really impressive. I need to get me one of these. A couple of the butchers from the shop came later to the party. I’ve told them how I was intimidated to buy stuff there because all their meat look too good for me to touch. But they seem really nice and willing to to help people out with cooking tips. Maybe they should see how I cooked up these tofu dogs first.

Keens Steakhouse’s Mutton Chop

I’ve been staring at this mutton chop photo on flickr for the past three days. This is the first time I’ve seen the meat and not the facial hair. Looks similar with the flaps and there’s also a likeness to Ralph from the Muppets.

I was planning on going with my friends tomorrow and splitting this mutton chop, a prime rib and creamed spinach. But I couldn’t stand looking at flickr anymore. So I went ahead by myself for lunch. Got the whole mutton chop. It’s big. Probably could have gotten the pub sized version which I think is half, but I didn’t want to take the chance at getting someone’s leftover half. I wanted to make sure I got the best cut. And looking at Chowhound, you’d want to get the king’s cut of prime rib as the English cut is not just smaller, it’s inferior.

So after researching this mutton chop on the web for three days straight, apparently Keens is serving lamb saddle, not sheep. But according to Frank Bruni, it doesn’t mean it’s worse at all. To me, it was like eating a big fat ribeye steak off a bone. Tender, juicy, meaty and the fatty parts melt in my mouth (those were my favorite parts). Every third bite, I’d have it with the accompanying mint jelly. It broke up the monotony of eating so much meat with a refreshingly sweet bite that works. The Sauteed Escarole also helped counter all that meat.

I ordered it medium at the recommendation of the restaurant. I also saw this on a message board and confirmed this with the waiter. You get it medium because it’s so thick that the meat near the bones is rare. I did see a few bloody spots on my medium chop. I’m glad I found this out online, otherwise I’d order it medium rare like I think I should.

Once again, like at Minetta Tavern, I felt like people thought I was some homeless kid. Maybe it’s all in my head. But they do seem startled when I’m all bundled up with my scarf and knitted hat in the washroom cleaning up. I suppose if old white-haired old men stepped into some dirty hipster hole, they might get looks too. I remember going into Gladys Knight’s Chicken and Waffles in Atlanta when I was a teenager. I didn’t realize it was an upscale African American social club-like restaurant. I was in my shorts and sneakers. They thought I was lost or looking to put Chinese Fast Food menus at the door. I just wanted Chicken and Waffles. I was a kid then and now I’m 33. I guess it doesn’t help that I look the same.
