Suzume Japanese Restaurant

We checked out Suzume on Lorimer Street across the street from the pizzeria where Son of Sam used to eat. Coincidentally, we were eating with a Sam. He likes to eat Ramen. So this was his idea. I like sake, so I said yeah.

I ordered a large carafe of sake, but I think the joke was that it was just for me. The other guys assumed we were sharing it.

We started off with some sushi that was pretty good and then moved on to bowls of Ramen. It’s weird how I rarely eat carby meals these days. Like I used to eat spaghetti and mashed potatoes every single day. Now, not so much. So this was weird eating a bowl of noodles. I wouldn’t have imagined I’d be like this. But I thought it was pretty good.

They gave us Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups with the receipt. Pretty unexpected. Too bad I rarely eat sweets anymore. Fuck. I never felt so guilty from a dinner.

Xi’an Famous Foods Brooklyn

Weird. Xi’an Famous Foods just opened up a storefront kind of close to where I live in East Williamsburg. But what’s weird is that in the middle of nowhere. So far from the train and mostly just among warehouses.

Seriously, this is the Google Maps street view…

Well after talking to the guy there, it makes actually makes sense since it is the location of their central kitchen. They make almost all the stuff there (sauces, meats, noodles) before shipping them off to their restaurants. And the location does make sense since it’s close to the highway. Might as well add a storefront since they are making food there anyway. And there are people that live close enough …like me.

Today is their grand opening and they are giving out free burgers or noodle dish if you go to their Facebook page. If you catch this quick enough and willing to trudge through the snow, you can still print out the coupon. Todd told me about it since he lives even closer and said he was going to go right when it opened …and they would hang his coupon on the wall like a first dollar bill. Anyway I beat him and was the first person there, but he and Elissa came after. No line because of the blizzard. People soon came in after us, but we already hogged the three stools at the counter. I feel bad all those people had to eat their food in the snow.

The food was good as usual. Maybe spicier? It had a lot of kick.

There was a big CPR poster on the wall. Is it weird that the people in the drawings look Asian? Maybe they just look at Asian because we’re in an Asian restaurant.

I do hope they hang my coupon on the wall.

My Mom Made Me a Bowl of Ramen

Over the holidays, my mom made me this bowl of ramen noodles. I wasn’t hungry, but I ate it anyway. It reminded me of when I was a kid, my mom would make me ramen with bits of Oscar Mayer sliced ham on top. It wasn’t until around high school did I find out how cheap ramen noodles were. I think around ten cents a pack back then or less. It surprised me. How could it be so cheap? You know, I felt a little deceived at the same time …like my mom deceived me. That she was feeding me such cheap food. I didn’t hold a grudge, just felt deceived.

M Noodle Shop’s Seaweed Salad and Marinated Turnips

After last Saturday’s Global Citizen Festival in Central Park, I met up with Todd and Sam to get some food and beer back in Williamsburg at M Noodle Shop. We were starving and sober from attending that concert. Apparently if you wanted to drink, you either had to sneak it in or pay for the couple thousand dollar VIP level.

M Noodle Shop is a good idea because I wanted a warm bowl of soup because I felt a cold coming on, plus they open so late …up until 6pm in fact. I got the same thing I got last time –the Curry Chicken Noodle Soup. But was also contemplating the Marinated Turnip Noodle Soup. The waiter said we could get just the turnips as a side dish. Sam ordered it along with his Seaweed Salad. I liked both of his dishes. The Marinated Turnip had a nice Asian/Chinese flavor. Not overpowering. Tender.

Oh yeah, Todd and I went to a Global Citizen Festival pre-party sponsored by Starr African Rum the night before. We drank so much. Then I remember seeing the Foo Fighters standing next to me at the bar. But I acted too cool by pretending I didn’t even notice. Then we left. Now that I think about it, I was kind of a dick. Not that Dave Grohl cares if I acknowledge him or not. But it was a behavior that only I knew I was doing. So it was like being a dick, but I was the only one that knew I was.

Luu’s Baguette – Pho Noodles

It was a super hot New York day, when I walked around trying to decide what to eat. I must’ve walked around for 45 mins in that heat, trying to avoid carbs. In the end, I ended up at Luu’s Baguette in Kips Bay and ordered a hot bowl of Pho Noodles. I don’t know if I was stupid or just delirious. It was a pretty good bowl though.

I got the Pho Tai (Raw Beef of Eye Round $6.95). They weren’t kidding. It was quite rare in the middle of the slices, which made it a little chewy. But overall, it was rather good. Super quick and pretty cheap for not having to go to Chinatown.

I saw a guy eating the Banh Mi sandwich. It looked really big.

Let me also take the opportunity to promote my label’s newest release —The Levitations. It was an album that was supposed to come out about 13 years ago by a guy that used to be in the The Rock*A*Teens. He’s now a peach farmer in Georgia and most of it still remains a mystery. It’s real dirty rock n roll. Out on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, etc.

M Noodle Shop’s Curry Chicken Noodle Soup

I haven’t been back to M Noodle Shop since it opened and ate a Steam Pork Bun. I got this bowl big bowl of Curry Chicken Noodle Soup ($8). I was a bit surprised. It was kind of fantastic for Chinese food in Williamsburg. I thought I’d miss the bones in the chicken, but it was actually easier to eat and quality bits. A lot of food. I didn’t finish.

Sure, I could get a good bowl of Noodles for a couple of dollars cheaper in Chinatown. But that’s so far.

Fen Yang Corporation’s Chow Mein Fuzhou Style

I was out an about the other night after the 2nd Pulp show. I made my friends get into a cab and took them to a bar in LES/Chinatown. Right when we were going in, I sorta ditched them because I realized I hadn’t eaten. I said I’ll be back. I walked around for a while and the only place I could find open was that Chinese restaurant, Fen Yang Corporation, that had that menu of interesting exotic delights.

They didn’t take credit cards and no one knew where an ATM was. The waitress made me order the cheapest thing on the menu –Chow Mein Fuzhou Style Noodles ($3.75). I actually had more money …maybe not enough for Goose Intestine w/ Tender Leek. I do wish I had enough for the Live Shrimp. That sounds exciting.

The Chow Mein Noodles were just alright. Greasy like it should be …with pieces of pork in there. A good size portion for being the cheapest dish on the menu. I wanted to ask for hot sauce, but I felt like I was already on their bad side for coming in with only a few dollars and because I’m ABC (American-Born-Chinese). Sometimes I get the feeling that Off-the-Boat Chinese like white people more than me.

When I got back to the bar, there turned out to be a cover to get in. It was sweaty, loud and crowded and I think my friends just wanted to sit and talk. They had already left. I felt like a dick.

This photo from my camera ain’t that bad. I shouldn’t be hesitant to use it, like the other day at Spritzenhaus beer garden, where my friend Jill had birthday drinks. I have a bad habit of not being able to eat anything new if I don’t have my camera to blog it. I need to stop worrying about that and also stop worrying about my camera making a big bulge in my pocket.

Muk Eun Ji & Son Ja Jang Restaurant

I didn’t realize this place was two restaurants in one when I ate there. Muk Eun Ji Korean Restaurant and Son Ja Jang Chinese Handpulled Noodles. I picked this place because it wasn’t packed like the other places in K-town. I needed my kimchi.

I wanted another one of those Soju bottles with the hot chick on it, but the waitress suggested I get the Bek Se Ju Korean Ginseng Wine. The waitress said if I drink it, the bottle says I’ll live to 100 years old. I don’t know if that’s what I need, but the wine was pretty tasty with that Ginseng flavor.

I got the Handpulled Noodles with Spicy Seafood Soup lunch special $8.99. Big bowl. I was taking photos of it and the waitress came over to show me how to take a photo …taking my chopsticks and pulling out a giant glob of the noodles from the bowl. Even after four years of food blogging, I still have things to learn.

I liked the broth. The noodles may not have been too impressive, although this long video of how they pull the noodles is. It puts me in a trance like watching my hard drive defragment.

I also got complimentary Kimchi, Onion and Pickled Radish that I dipped into Korean Bean Paste. I couldn’t believe how good the raw onion tasted with that bean paste.

The walls of the restaurant were big advertisements for Jinan Maisan aged kimchi. The restaurant also posted this video on Youtube…

1:08 –Me So Hungry!

They gave me a little Yogurt drink at the end. I think this meal left me with some good stomach bacteria for my probiotic diet.
