Great NY Noodletown

2nd night of hanging out with my family in NYC. We end up going to Great NY Noodletown. My older sister had a hankering for Soy Sauce Chicken. I remember that they haveÂ really good Baby Pig, so let’s try here.

Shit. All the customers are white. What will my family think of my choice? Well, whatever. We’re seated …and I know about the Baby Pig.

We’re not sure if my sister really wanted the Soy Sauce Chicken or the Poached Chicken in Ginger Scallion Sauce. So we ordered both. I think we were all looking for the Ginger Scallion sauce. But the way they had it here, the Soy Sauce Chicken had the real Ginger Scallion dipping sauce and the the Poached Chicken in Ginger Scallion sauce had some weird gravy …the opposite of what it should be. Or maybe they cooked it this way because they thought we seemed white.

Soy Sauce Chicken was awesome because the Ginger Scallion dipping sauce rules. I don’t understand why they made the Poached Chicken in Ginger Scallion sauce/gravy that way …what up?

Baby Pig was crispy on the outside. Fatty and juicy on the inside.

My other sister looked up what the NY Times recommended at this place –Noodles with Ginger Scallion sauce. It ended up being the least favorite dish. Noodles with Oyster Sauce drizzled over it.

On a separate thought: I’m not sure if it’s because I write about food, people like to tell me what food sucks. I guess people also go out of their way to tell me what rules. I guess I rather hear about what rules …mmm Baby Pig.

I was wearing a keyboard tie on Halloween, so I felt the need to do something. I went out with Anthony and Susie for a few drinks in Carroll Gardens. I got buzzed and angry from the bartender serving me $3 happy hour beers and talking shit about Tebow. So it was very welcoming to have Susie make us Peanut Noodles and Apple Crisp. So stuffed. I hadn’t had Apple Crisp since elementary school. It was awesome.

Uncle Zhou Restaurant

A Ramen and Friends adventure at Uncle Zhou in Elmhurst, Queens. My favorites were the Triple Delight Dumplings, Big Tray of Chicken and Pancake sandwich. I really needed to wipe my mouth with the pancake bread after the Spicy Crispy Rabbit. The Sichuan Peppercorns in there knocked out my tongue all numb. It was an interesting sensation that I curiously kept coming back to try …but really difficult to eat.

I think I paid around $11 at the end of the check split. Really cheap for all I ate.

Menkui Tei Noodle Restaurant

Killing time with Sam at this ramen spot, before I went back to my place for my roommate’s birthday. Unfortunately, I’m getting really lazy with bringing my camera with me. It’s just too bulgy in my tight jeans in the summertime. I did have my phone with the Camera360 app. It has a filter called “Japanese Style” which was very appropriate for the cuisine. It brings up the brightness, lessens the contrast and gives it a purple-ish tint. It’s so dark in Menkui-Tei, I don’t know how these people on Yelp got their bright photos.

The best thing was the Age Platter special –fried squid legs, fried octopus balls, and fried octopus. I could eat a whole plate of the fried octopus.

Tan Tan Men noodles was too soupy for me, but the flavor was right.

Afterwards, I brought home a cake from Grand Morelos. I’ve wanted to get the naked girl with the see-thru night gown topper, but I didn’t know how to ask for it. So I just got a dinosaur. Then things got crazy when I pulled out the guitar and cranked it up with the Happy Birthday song. Some dude called out for me to play Stairway to Heaven and ACDC. I freaked out and screamed “FUCK YOU!!!” then stormed off. He thought I was being funny and laughed.

Main Noodle House

Matt Gill and I had take out from Main Noodle House when we were at his studio. I got the Beef Stew Noodle Soup and he got the Wonton Noodle Soup. They came in separate containers to keep the broth separate from the noodles and wonton. I was impressed in my own weird way that they used pretty bad cuts of beef or in other words, more authentic Chinese cuts of beef. The Wonton soup broth tasted better.

I suppose I like how Main Noodle House isn’t so much of a standard Chinese take out spot. They have a few Chinese-Chinese menu items like Roast Duck, Chinese Sausage and Fish.

Noodle Village

Yes! Yoshie set up a Chinese New Year dinner for Ramen and Friends. I think I was the only Chinese person, so I had to represent. I really wanted try some interesting stuff like the Pig liver, kidneys and stomach over noodles. No one really wanted to help me try. So I just got the Beef Brisket and Tendons Lo Mein. Really good tender beef chunks, but I didn’t see any tendons. Maybe a turnip. But I do believe the beef was cut next to the tendons and stomach.

I did manage to talk Trish into getting the Pig Hocks over noodles. She walked in late and didn’t know what it was. I didn’t really tell her.

Overall a good cheap meal. I liked the soup dumplings.

At the end, Richard asks me if I want to go meet sixty single Jewish ladies right now. So I jumped in a cab with him and ended up at this speed dating event —Date My Jewish Friend. Wow, I didn’t know was going on, but I thought I was really awesome. Two and half years of studying pickup really prepped me at yelling at 60 girls in a loud bar for 3 minutes each.

At one point, I went to the bathroom and overheard two girls laughing that all the guys were totalÂ douche bags. I was wondering if they were talking about me. When I came back, I found out that they were our next table and I was drinking the tequila that the guys in front of us tried to buy them. I really thought someone handed me a free drink. I wonder if that counts as a neg.

Hung Ry – Fancy Hand Pulled Noodles

Had dinner with my sister and her friends at Hung Ry this past weekend. Traditional Chinese hand-pulled noodles with fancier high quality meats and toppings (lobster, veal cheek, marrow) . Everything I tasted was delicious, but expensive. It’s not your ol’ Chinatown $5 noodle bowl. My bowl (Veal cheek, marrow, liver. Japanese sweet potato, quince) was $19. The Smoked Pork Belly noodle bowl was amazing.
