Cheburechnaya’s Lamb Testicles, Heart and Fried Beef Brains

Yoshie’s Ramen and Friends adventure took us to Cheburechnaya (Kosher Russian) in Rego Park, Queens. This is where we ate Lamb Testicles, Heart and Fried Beef Brains…

It was pretty confusing ordering these. I couldn’t tell how many came in an order. We almost got five orders of Testicles, which would have been 25 balls. That would have been too way many balls. We just got one.

They had other stuff too …like this huge bowl shaped bread, called Noni Toki. It was almost like matzoh. Their Uzbeki style bread was good for the Hummus and Babaganoush.

They served many different types of Chebureki and Samcy patties. We had the ones with pumpkin and ribs. There were real ribs with bones. I liked those a lot.

I recommend the Whole Grilled Chicken. That was really good for sounding so tame (unlike the testicles). I would have been interested in the Lamb Fat and Veal Sweetbread Shish Kebabs if we were to order more.

Really cool restaurant. I enjoyed pretty much everything, even the balls. They even played Sade via Youtube on the TVs the whole night.

Pickled and Dried Okra

I’ve posted snippets from the road, but now I’m ready to share our full-on adventures and photos from our Shonali Bhowmik 100 Oak’s Revival tour down South…

Day 4: Jeff got these Pickled Okras by the Dutch Kettle in North Carolina. And Matt got these crispy Dried Okra from Sweet Gourmet at the market. Both pretty awesome.

Jimmy’s Diner – Fried Chicken and Waffles

Holy moly. How come I’ve never knew of this place so close to me? Look at these Chicken and Waffles smothered with white gravy! Everything cooked perfectly. Three pieces (thigh, leg and wing). Add some syrup to the mix and it’s insane. The best cooked Deep Fried Pickles I’ve ever had. Crisp, not soggy. $2 Coors all day and wasn’t crowded (3pm Saturday).

Jimmy’s definitely kicks my homemade-assembled Chicken and Waffle Man’s ass.

Vlasic’s New Farmer’s Garden Pickles

This here David Burke Kitchen lunch event was hosted by Vlasic pickles. Wait, isn’t David Burke Kitchen expensive ($$$$$ on Menupages) and isn’t Vlasic the pickle with the stork? Cool!

Vlasic wanted to show off their new Farmer’s Garden pickles. Hand-packed in a mason jar with some carrots, peppers and garlic at the bottom. Classic brining techniques with no preservatives, such that they have to keep it refrigerated right after packing, onto a refrigerated truck and into the cooler of your grocer’s produce section …to keep the freshness and crispness. The coolest thing is that they use a thing called a WaterKnife in the factory that cuts the cucumbers with a high powered stream of water. That’s just as rad as when I turned a Supersoaker into a beer-to-mouth shooter last week. Apparently it hurts the mouth.

So they had a DBK chef create a menu to incorporate these new Vlasic pickles. Okay first thing I had when I got there was this jar of Tomato, Eggplant, Ricotta Trifle on crostini. It had nothing to do with pickles, but it was really good and creamy. The first pickle dish was a Pickleback Granite –shaved pickle juice ice into a frozen little cup of cucumber. Then Pastrami Salmon, Bison Tartare and Chicken Club sandwich with a pickle somewhere. For dessert David Burke signature Cheesecake Lollipops and magic from NYCFoodie.com. That was a neat trick. I kinda want to be foodblogger/magician now.

Well at the lunch, I’m not sure I could tell the difference with new Farmer’s Garden pickle and a regular Vlasic pickle. Maybe that says something good about the old pickles that have preservatives. But the other night, I did pull out one of these new Farmer’s pickles to put on my mayonnaise sandwich. First off, the pickle was cut big. I like that. And in the moment, I did notice the crispness and zesty flavor. There is a difference. I just had to try it in my own home and scenario …with a mayonnaise sandwich of course.

St Anselm’s Boar Belly Sandwich & Fried Hot Pickles

I first started off my day yesterday with the AAM CMJ party at the Knitting Factory. AAM promoted my bands’ last two albums, yet I was surprised I was still invited. In my paranoid mind, they recently fired their publicist because he agreed to take on our next Justice of the Unicorns album. That’s probably not true, but I don’t know why no one else there will return my emails. Anyway I figured I’d get a free show out of them and saw Francis and the Lights, Magic Bullets and Ty Segall.

I had planned to make my lunch at Fette Sau BBQ across the street, but instead saw this menu next door at St. Anselm (the same owners) that had Boar Belly Sandwich and Foie Gras Piergoies. Fuck Me. I went in and ordered that Boar Belly Sandwich and Fried Rick’s Picks Hottie Pickles. These fried pickles didn’t do anything for me, but that Boar Belly sandwich was delicious. It was like a cross between thick cut bacon and jerky with a dark flavor and texture. Looking at their menu now, there’s a lot of adventurous dishes. I need to go back and try more.

Francis and the Lights was so spazzy, but in a way that I’d see myself being if I was him. He’s opening up for Ke$ha this week.

Ty Segall is like a cross between the Black Lips and Nirvana.
