Maze Restaurant by Gordon Ramsey

My sisters were in New York a couple of weeks ago. I don’t know why. They said just for fun. I don’t get it. Anyway, they took me out Maze Restaurant by Gordon Ramsey at the London hotel. We had to make dinner quick because we had tickets to Paul Rudd’s play, “Grace.” We got the three-course pre fixe meals and tasted all of it.

We started off with Risotto, Butter Lettuce Salad and Slow-Cooked Organic Hen’s Egg. I was curious about the Risotto, since Gordon Ramsey makes such a big deal about Risotto on Hell’s Kitchen. No one can cook a fucking risotto it seems like from TV. Well, I don’t know much about risotto, but this one was pretty good. The Slow-Cooked Organic Hen’s Egg was interesting. It had some frothy thing going on. Neat to try, but maybe too much to try to eat the whole thing. I kind of liked the Butter Lettuce Salad the best. I didn’t think I would like a salad so much. I don’t know what made it good. It just looked like lettuce with corn and dressing on it. But really good.

Our entrees were the Roasted Cannon of Lamb, Brook Trout and the Berkshire Pork Chop. All pretty good. I liked the Pork Chop the best. It was the biggest meatiest of them all.

The dessert were really good too. I couldn’t stop tasting them. Chocolate Pudding was shaped into a rectangle block. Chocolate Fondant and Pumpkin Cheesecake were good.

Now that I look at the menu prices –Jesus! That’s expensive. Like that small bowl of Risotto is $19! And even though I really liked that salad, it was $16. God, I’m thankful for my sisters treating me. Grace was interesting.

Excellent Pork Chop House

Yoshie took the Ramen and Friends crew to Excellent Pork Chop House in Chinatown for some excellent Taiwanese Fried Pork Chops.

I really dug the Wonton in Chili Sauce. I bought an order to share with the table (which we had split into girls and boys tables), but I ended up hogging them to myself.

Instead of getting the traditional Pork Chop over rice ($5.25), I got the Herbal Soup with Lo Mein ($7) and a Pork Chop ($2.50) on the side. The Herbal Soup tasted like Chinese medicine, but not as bad as that sounds. I asked the waitress what this Herbal Soup was good for, but she wouldn’t tell me. I somehow got the feeling from the guys that it had to do with my privates.

I put that pork chop over the noodles that had ground pork and pickled cucumber –mixed it up with some of the leftover wonton chili sauce. That was awesome. I was kind of full only a few bites into those noodles, but somehow I finished that big bowl.

Afterwards, we went ahead and ordered a Taiwanese Ice with a ton of crap on it. I think it was a deal on the menu, but we couldn’t read it because it was in Chinese –like $4.50 for whatever they want to put on it. It had a bunch of different color beans, different color jellys, fruit, tapioca balls and I think corn. We didn’t eat much of it. But I can’t remember if it was because we were stuffed or because I thought the yellow jelly was pig foot gelatin.

This place is great. It’s cheap and the pork chops are excellent. I like how they made a big point to advertise the MSG on their menu.

Tio Wally Eats America: Ron’s Family Affair

I’m happy to have Tio Wally (long-time Me So Hungry reader) aboard to send in his eating adventures from across America. Here he is in West Memphis, Arkansas.

Greetings from West Memphis, Arkansas
N 35° 08.804’  W 090° 10.644’  Elev. 271 ft.

I asked a loader (the guys who load the trailers) where I could get a good home-cooked meal and he sent me to Ron’s Family Affair.

I was really wondering if I was going to be able to find it. The guy had a really thick accent and I found him extremely difficult to understand. I thought he was saying “Runs.” When I encounter lingual situations like that I always feel stupid having someone repeat something more than three times. Nevertheless, I found it.

Ron’s Family Affair is a funky little meat-and-three-sides place, except you only get two sides. I got the smothered pork chops, steamed/boiled(?) cabbage, black-eyed peas and cornbread, along with a sweet tea ($6.50).

First off: Ron evidently owns a very, very large salt shaker. And he’s not afraid to use it. This can sometimes be an issue, for me anyway, at some soul food places. And Ron, evidently, has a little less fear than others. Thankfully, he wasn’t fearless enough to take it completely over the edge.

The smothered pork chops were extremely lean and tender. And though the gravy was a bit salty, the generous portions more than made up for it: two great big pork chops. The cabbage wasn’t too salty and was really flavorful, with that wonderful sweetness that cabbage gets when it’s cooked. He was probably also using a bit of bacon grease. Yum.

Ron’s black-eyed peas, however, were another story altogether. I’ve been eating black-eyed peas my whole life — over 23, 27 years! —and these were easily the best I’ve ever had. They were so good, in fact, that I got a side order and another piece of cornbread to eat with my leftover pork chop.

But for the life of me I can’t figure out what he did. When I make black-eyed peas I mix a can of peas and a can of stewed tomatoes together and heat ‘em up. The peas get the sweetness of the stewed tomatoes, and Ron’s tasted very similar. But there was no evidence of tomatoes in them. And it wasn’t the ham hock because I’ve used them, too. It was something else.

As I was leaving I told Ron that his black-eyed peas were the best I’d ever eaten. I wanted to ask him what he did but he didn’t seem all that interested in talking to me, even as I was heaping a plethora of praise on his peas. He just said something like “Good,” and promptly disappeared back into the kitchen. So much for learning the secret of Ron’s black-eyed peas.

Ron also made some pretty mean cornbread. Of course, I’m of the mind that there is no such thing as bad cornbread. It’s just that some cornbread is better than others. And Ron’s was definitely some of the better.

Ron’s sweet tea on the other hand sucked … blue whale! Judging by the awful telltale phony lemon aftertaste it was undoubtedly from one of those disgusting mixes formulated by Dow Chemical or Monsanto or some other evil monstrosity masquerading as a people-friendly concern.

The really disappointing thing about Ron’s, however, was me. I should’ve ordered one of that day’s other meat selections: Neck Bones. As I was driving away it occurred to me: neck bones probably taste a lot like ox tails, which I love. Seriously, What’s the difference between neck bones and ox tails? Six feet? Next time I’ll try them and report back.

And so we roll.

Cafe Soul’s $1.99 Pork Chop Sandwich (Skippers, VA) – Full Pics!

I’ve posted snippets from the road, but now I’m ready to share our full-on adventures and photos from our Shonali Bhowmik 100 Oak’s Revival tour down South…

Day 2: The tire pressure warning light was on, so we stopped at a gas station in Skippers, VA …nothing much around, but I did see a small building next door. It looked kinda like a strip club at first, but I saw a sign for FOOD! I ran over while the band checked out the tires.

They had a $1.99 Pork Chop special that day (Thursdays). I went ahead inside to order one. It’s a little dark lounge with a couple of pool tables. The people there were really nice. The chef said we should come back to play music for them.

When he pulled out the pork chop out of the deep fryer, I couldn’t believe it’s size. Humongous! I was expecting a little small thing for $1.99. This thing was incredible. It was bigger than my face. Reminded me of the big pork chop at Brooklyn Star, but I think this was bigger. He put it on 2 slices of white bread. This thing was amazing. Tasted great. The best deal I’ve ever had. It was fate that the warning signal went off.
