They’re right! Publix Subs are Freakin’ Awesome!

I grew up in Florida, where Publix was one of the main grocery stores. I’ve had friends that worked there in high school and in college. They always told me that the subs were so good there. I never had one and couldn’t imagine it would be that amazing. Then I saw a Buzzfeed article a few years ago that talked about how awesome Publix subs are. It made me wish I tried them back in the day …because I trust the Internet more than my friends.

So I went to Florida last Christmas and my sister and mom were going to Publix and asked if I wanted anything, while I was setting up the new HDTV and Apple TV for my parents. I said, “Yeah, get me a Publix sub.” My sister brought me back a Turkey Sub. She said they took a lot of care into building it. A real sandwich artist.

Dude… It was so awesome. So fresh. So much better than Subway.

Speaking of Subway, my friend always thought Subway smelled liked wet B.O. towels. I always thought Subway smelled good  when I walked by …with the fresh baked bread. And recently I looked it up. That’s a thing. Some people find Subway bread to smell repulsive. Just Google it. There are too many links for me to link. Well, here’s a screenshot…

Subway smell

Also speaking of Subway, why didn’t Jared ever lose more weight? I know he lost a shit load of weight initially before he became the spokesman. But to me, he was still overweight. Like if your only job was to be skinny and get paid a lot of money, you’d get skinny or be in great shape. But maybe he was preoccupied by other things. I don’t blame Subway for Jared being a piece of shit. I kind of like Subway. But I feel like Subway really should have nudged him to get into Hugh Jackman shape. Because he was still kinda fat, right?

Anyway, Publix subs rule. I ate the second half on my plane ride home to New York. Everyone was like, “What’s that smell?” Dude, it’s my Publix sub.

Tio Wally Eats America: Jersey Mike’s Subs

I’m happy to have Tio Wally (long-time Me So Hungry reader) aboard to send in his eating adventures from across America. Here he is in Asheville, North Carolina.

Greetings from Asheville, North Carolina
N 35° 34.936’  W 082° 36.237’  Elev. 2208 ft.

It’s funny what you can find when you leave the land yacht and wander around. Such was the case recently when I was parked in one of my “secret spots” in Asheville — okay, West Asheville.

I awoke early on a Sunday morning and, knowing that my favorite Sunday Brunch spot had stopped serving Sunday brunch for the season, went looking for something to eat. Although I’d parked in this spot many times I’d never wandered into the little strip mall that adjoined the little side street I called home.

Much to my surprise the place is a goldmine of foods. There is a little Mexican market with a deli/cafe in it; a tiny Chinese take-out place; an American burrito place; and a sandwich place called Jersey Mike’s Subs.

Jersey Mike’s caught my eye because they had a Grilled Pastrami Rueben on the menu. But it seemed kind of pricey; $6.55 for a regular. I don’t know why that seemed like a lot at the time, but it did.

Nevertheless, I bit the bullet and ordered the Rueben (pastrami, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing on a French roll) and … good gawd y’all, the thing felt like it weighed about two pounds. I lugged my booty back to the yacht and, geez Louise, it was absolutely awesome.

So good was it, in fact, that I promised myself I’d get another one next time I was there, regardless of whether I was hungry at the time or not. I knew they are as good cold as they are hot because, at nearly 8” long, I couldn’t finish it all in one sitting.

So keeping my promise, I went back to Jersey Mike’s in Asheville to get another Grilled Pastrami Rueben and was soon faced with a real dilemma: I wanted another Rueben but the special that day — they have a different one every day — was a Jersey Mike’s Famous Philly with chips and a 22 oz. drink for $6.99, only 4¢ more than the cost of the regular sandwich.

Who could possibly pass up a deal like that? Not me. But I also wanted the Reuben. So I did the only thing a quick-witted, logical sailor would do: I got both.

The Philly (grilled steak, American cheese, onions and peppers) was great, too. The steak was really tender and generously piled on. It was all I could do to finish it.

While I was waiting for the sandwiches I noticed how fresh the vegetables in the cold station were, and that the tomatoes were actually red and ripe. I mentioned this and was told that they get their veggies from the Asheville Farmer’s Market, which is truly the real deal, a world class Farmer’s Market. It’s amazing what a huge difference ripe, farm fresh veggies make flavor-wise, especially when compared to a certain ubiquitious sub-par sub chain; I think that particular chain busses its produce in on a phantom, once-monthly Wolverine.

And so we roll.

Little Lamb Holiday Party 2011

Last night’s party was so awesome. Food catered by Gourmet Garage and a 6-foot sub from Lorimer Market. Great music by Sarah Dooley, Wildcats, Marcellus Hall, Prince Rupert’s Drops, Tigers and Monkeys, 100 Oaks Revival band, and Justice of the Unicorns. I can’t believe all the people that came to completely down all that food. Next time we gotta get a longer sub.

Here’s our Holiday Compilation, featuring new music we are putting out in the new year. Free to download and stream!

Lorimer Market’s Meatball Hero

On my way to yesterday’s Brooklyn Comics & Graphics Festival, I stopped by Lorimer Market for lunch. Todd’s been raving about their sandwiches. Even goes so boldly to say it’s WAAAAY better than Graham Ave Meats. I’m thinking of ordering a Party Sub from Lorimer Market for next week’s party, so I figured I’d try it out first.

First impression: nice and clean place. The meat section looks really good and clean. I’m definitely going try my next steak there. Sorry, Mario.

I ordered Todd’s favorite, the meatball hero (named filomena on the menu). Yeah, great big meatballs! You can see the herbs.

$6.95 exactly for the sandwich. I would have been satisfied with half, but I stuffed myself all the way. Way to get fat.
