Iroha Japanese Restaurant

Here was a day I assumed I was going to get VIP to an event. I just assumed I would. I’ve been getting VIP all summer. Although I didn’t get it this time. I was dumbfounded and acted like a little brat. I figured I was entitled to VIP.

So I went nearby to said event in Midtown to contemplate if I should even go. I decided on this Japanese restaurant, Iroha. I got some sake. I ordered the Seabass Miso Yuan. It was recommended on the menu. Really tasty even though on the small side. Also got a skewer of grilled garlic and shishitou peppers. Good. Then ordered another sake and California Roll while I decided if I want to go.

I said fuck it and manned up. Why am I so entitled to VIP? Who am I? I’m just like everyone else. So I walked over to Roseland Ballroom and there was a line going around the whole block almost full circle. I went home.

Battle of the Sushi Boats in Greenpoint

We finally cracked the code on Sushi boats. Where a Sushi Boat for Three at Sakura 6 is cheaper than a Sushi Boat for Two at Sapporo Haru, you actually get a ton more food at Sapporo Haru in the boat for two.

SUSHI BOAT COMPARISON

It’s funny, because Todd and I have been eating numerous sushi boats all over and we always thought Sakura 6 was the best. But last week during the 4th of July, Sakura 6 was unfortunately closed. So we went to Sapporo Haru and got a sushi boat for two, but it was surprisingly huge. I thought they made a mistake and made one for four. So yesterday, we went to Sakura 6 for a boat for three. We went through it quick, but still satisfied.

Then somehow we decided to go to get another sushi boat at Sapporo Haru. I think it was all the free sake talking. We were like let’s just get a boat for two to share. We really just wanted to drink more. But it was insane how big it came out again. It wasn’t a fluke. Sure, it costs more ($55 vs a boat for 3 at Sakura 6 for $49), but it’s way so much more food and it looks better. I guess you get one less soup or salad. But the salad is so much bigger there too.

Both places give you free unlimited hot sake. Maybe Sakura 6 seems a little more generous. But I feel like Sapporu Haru is the clear winner in this boat race.

Dang, that was pretty stupid eating two sushi boats in a row.

Sushi Lounge – 50% off Sushi

Todd and I are like, “should we party?” It’s raining so hard outside. We did it because Andrew WK tells us to do it. We went to my friend Lisa’s comedy show at Niagra. All wet. I had a few drinks there.

Then Todd disappeared. I found him across the street at Sushi Lounge, where it’s 50% off sushi all the time. And it was late Happy Hour (50% off draft beers and cocktails after 10pm). Sounds like a great deal. But the sushi prices are jacked up, so 50% off is like regular price.

Todd got the Sushi Mania, which sounds awesome at $23.50. Quite disappointing though. Sushi was falling apart and it looked less mania than it sounded.

I got the Katsu Curry. It was alright. But dang, I forgot I’m cutting  back on the carbs. So I didn’t eat the rice, which was half of the plate.

We were still hungry, so we got a Sushi Deluxe.

I guess the late happy hour is a good deal, but we left pretty disappointed. Then we had to walk home in the heavy rain with broken umbrellas. I thought there were never regrets in life, but we really regretted going out this time.

Azuki Sushi – Free Unlimited Hot Sake

We were heading off to Northeast Kingdom in Bushwick, but got on the wrong train going back to Manhattan. So I got the guys to go to Azuki Sushi off of Union Square. It was silly, because they didn’t want to go because it was in Manhattan. They are like those people that claim they never go above 14th St. This restaurant is around 19th. Well, this place has free unlimited hot sake. I’m not sure that really helped, but we gotta try as many of these places as we can.

Todd thought it smelled like cat pee when we walked in and it was extra warm. Sam asked for a sushi boat and they laughed at him. They didn’t know what that was. The place was pretty empty for being 7pm on a Saturday. Now I started to feel like a jerk for dragging these guys out to here. I also felt like they were suspicious if I led them down the wrong subway entrance on purpose. I swear I didn’t plan it.

But the place wasn’t that bad. We got the Sushi/Sashimi Platter for Two ($49) and a couple of extra rolls –to meet the $20 minimum per person to get the free hot sake (or white wine). Food was decent. I think after enough free sakes, everyone calmed down.

I’ll be doing a roundup of all the Free Unlimited Hot Sake restaurants real soon. Stay tuned.

Suzume Japanese Restaurant

We checked out Suzume on Lorimer Street across the street from the pizzeria where Son of Sam used to eat. Coincidentally, we were eating with a Sam. He likes to eat Ramen. So this was his idea. I like sake, so I said yeah.

I ordered a large carafe of sake, but I think the joke was that it was just for me. The other guys assumed we were sharing it.

We started off with some sushi that was pretty good and then moved on to bowls of Ramen. It’s weird how I rarely eat carby meals these days. Like I used to eat spaghetti and mashed potatoes every single day. Now, not so much. So this was weird eating a bowl of noodles. I wouldn’t have imagined I’d be like this. But I thought it was pretty good.

They gave us Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups with the receipt. Pretty unexpected. Too bad I rarely eat sweets anymore. Fuck. I never felt so guilty from a dinner.

Wasabi Restaurant – Free Unlimited Hot Sake

I really can’t stop eating sushi and free hot sake. Todd and I went back out to Greenpoint to try another sushi/free sake place. We first went to Kyoto Sushi. They had a sign for free sake and Todd even called to confirm. But then I overheard that the table next to us were going to be charged for their second carafe. Turns out you only get one free. So we left. I think that couple were jealous that we left. For real, how do you think you can survive as a sushi restaurant in Greenpoint without free unlimited hot sake?

So we were about to go back to Sakura 6, but saw that Wasabi also had free sake. It turned out to be unlimited! They should really advertise it better online. It’s hard to find out which places are really free unlimited hot sake.

Wasabi didn’t have a sushi boat. So we got a Su-sa-ma Platter (for 2-3 people $49). It was a lot of food, but we somehow finished it.

They were very generous on refilling our hot sake. Even taking our half filled ones and filling it back up. Also generous on giving us wasabi when we asked for more. Looks like a broken off penis statue.

On the menu, there was a Bedford and Greenpoint roll. Although I’m not sure what makes it Bedford and Greenpoint. Oh, the Greenpoint has avocado.

Sakura 6 – Free Unlimited Hot Sake

I’m addicted to free hot sake. We went to Sakura 6 in Greenpoint, where I first learned that free sake existed. There’s no real minimum to spend on food to get free sake. I think just have to buy enough, like an entree.

Todd and I split a sushi boat for two, which was a little cheaper than Sapporo Haru per person. It was good. But honestly, I don’t know if I really paid attention because of all the free sake. And they were super generous. You didn’t have to ask them for more sake. They came by to check the bottle themselves.

This place is so awesome, we came back the next week with friends. We meant to keep track of how many free sakes, but we kept forgetting to count. Too many sakes to remember.
