Tio Wally Eats America: The Gearjammer Restaurant

I’m happy to have Tio Wally (long-time Me So Hungry reader) aboard to send in his eating adventures from across America. Here he is in Union Gap, Washington.

Greetings from Union Gap, Washington

When I was a kid my mom used to say “Go to a truck stop if you want good food.” Her reasoning was that it must be good if all the truckers were eating there. I’ve mentioned this before only to correct the fallacy of that belief.

That the food is “automatically” good at a truck stop isn’t remotely true. Indeed, the reason truckers eat at truck stops is quite simple: There is enough room to park their big-ass rigs! That is not to say there aren’t notable exceptions where the food is really good.

The Gearjammer Restaurant, located in the Gearjammer Travel Plaza at Exit 36 on I-82, is definitely one of those notable exceptions. I’ve eaten here a number of times. It’s reasonably priced and the food is always quite good. Since I ended up stuck here for Thanksgiving, and I knew they’d be open, I took advantage of it.

The Thanksgiving Dinner Special consisted of generous portions of white and dark meat turkey with homemade gravy, dressing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, yams/sweet potatoes, corn, a roll, and a choice of soup or salad for $11.29.

I started with the soup du jour, potato. This was possibly the best potato soup I’ve ever eaten. Thick and creamy, with big pieces of potato and celery, and bits of bacon, this soup was incredible. In fact, both the waitress, Patty, and I agreed that it was “To die for!” So good was it that I’ll now be calling them to see when they have it.

The plate of turkey with all the fixin’s was huge — about twice as much as I could eat — and all of it incredibly tasty. I should’ve asked the chef, Michael, when I talked to him but I think that, with the exception of the canned corn and yams, everything was homemade. He told me he’d spent two days putting it together … and it tasted it.

The turkey was incredibly moist and topped with a great turkey gravy. And it was a lot of meat. The dressing also was really great and, thankfully, not full of sage, a spice I truly abhor. The mashed potatoes tasted homemade and had more of that great gravy on it. Although the yams were missing those crusty little melted marshmallows they were wonderful, too.

What can I say? The whole meal was so good that I had to personally thank Michael for all his hard work. He had definitely made my day by preparing such a tasty and satisfying traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Because it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without it, I ordered a piece of pumpkin pie ($2.29) — my favorite — to go. And yes, it came with real whipped cream.

The whole meal was so huge that I ended up with an ample portion of what I consider to be the best part of Thanksgiving — leftovers. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any bread to jam it all onto to make a grossly oversized sandwich. Still, it was fantastic all over again.

Apart from a lack of family and/or friends to share it with, the only thing missing from the meal was pitted black olives … and perhaps children’s fingertips to attach them to.

I hope all of you enjoyed Thanksgiving dinners that were equally satisfying and hope that the rest of your holidays are likewise happy, healthy and suitably festive.

And so we roll.

Tio Wally Eats America: Thanksgiving in Tulsa

I’m happy to have Tio Wally (long-time Me So Hungry reader) aboard to send in his eating adventures from across America. Here he is in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Greetings from Tulsa, Oklahoma
N 36° 07.893’  W 95° 48.956’  Elev. 747 ft.

Before I get accused of lying about being in Peculiar on Thanksgiving Day I want to confess: I lied about being in Peculiar on Thanksgiving Day.

The truth is the cast and crew of the SS Me So Hungry awoke in Atlanta and eventually landed in Herculaneum, Missouri on Thanksgiving Day. You’re no doubt familiar with Herculaneum. It’s north of Festus, just south of Pevely. And for dinner we had nothing; we got a large Vienna Roast coffee and a glazed donut at the QT for $1.81 the next morning.

Friday night we made landfall in Tulsa where we had the good fortune to use and abuse the hospitality of our friends Linda and Lewis, and pig out for a couple of days on their leftovers. And, boy, were they good — the people and the food!

Evidently a bit of rivalry had taken place between their son and future son-in-law which culminated in a turkey-cooking competition. One of them deep-fried a bird, while the other smoked his fowl. Much to my dismay there was a marked absence of spatchcocking (or, if you prefer, spattlecocking) of any poultry that day.

While both claimed victory, I thought the smoked one was a little better although I have no idea why. Both were tender and tasted like, well, turkey. Linda thought the smoked bird was a little too sweet — something about injections and brown sugar and such — but I couldn’t taste it. I thought they both tasted great.

Along with the leftover Competition turkey I had great dressing and really scrumptious yams. But the best was yet to come.

For dessert they had it all: Pumpkin Pie, Lemon Meringue Pie, Pecan Pie, Cheesecake and German Chocolate Cake. I’d hit a mother lode! Unfortunately I was too stuffed to have any dessert that night.

Then the next day tragedy struck: the Lemon Meringue Pie had disappeared before I was able to snag a piece. Dropping to my knees in despair, I asked “Can a greater misfortune possibly befall one who has beheld, with his own eyes, the pie?” Don’t answer. By the way, it really was a photo-worthy beauty.

Another real treat they had in their refrigerator were Pickled Asparagus Spears. They were thin spears, slightly spicy-hot and had both great flavor and texture, tender and crispy simultaneously. They reminded me of, and were every bit as good as, those Spicy Pickled Blue Lake (Green) Beans I love so much. They said they liked them with beer. I could see that. They’d also make the ultimate Bloody Mary garnish.

If that weren’t already enough, Saturday night Linda made Turkey and Dumplings. Real dumplings! Unlike the bogus dumplings the Pennsylvania Dutch are so famous for foisting on the unsuspecting, Linda made the real things: succulent little doughy balls in a super creamy broth. Sort of like slightly undercooked biscuits in gravy. Unbelievably good.

All in all we’re pretty grateful our belated Thanksgiving dinner(s) worked out so well. And Lewis, bless his heart, hid away the last piece of pumpkin pie especially for me. The only downside, could there possibly be one, is that Skippy didn’t get to eat his Phil.

And so we roll.

Ham and Coke

Rusty and I walked down to C-Town grocery to get our Thanksgiving meat. We passed by our neighbor and he asked what we were up to. We told him we were getting a ham. He said to try cooking it with Coke.

It worked. We poured the Coke on, basted it as it cooked down a bit and just poured more on. It took away the pig meat smell and made it really tender. Really good.

Here’s a recipe from Coca-Cola for their Ham recipe.

…we didn’t use the brown sugar or the pineapple though.

Also here’s a video from Coke…

Tio Wally Eats America: Happy Thanksgiving

I’m happy to have Tio Wally (long-time Me So Hungry reader) aboard to send in his eating adventures from across America. Here he is in Peculiar, Missouri.

Greetings from Peculiar, Missouri

N 38.7192°  W 94.4583°  Elev. 991 ft.

I hope your Thanksgiving is going well.

Thanksgiving for the crew of the SS Me So Hungry is just not coming off as advertised. In fact, it has gone so hopelessly awry that my evil twin, crack lead navigator Skippy, has become hopelessly despondent, inconsolable.

We sailed into Peculiar in high spirits hoping to attend the Annual Thanksgiving Day Groundhog Roast at St. Alfonzo’s Church of the Kewpahn Redeemer that we’d heard so much about. Sadly, it has been cancelled because the nuns decided to forego the roast to pursue their other great passion: precision roller skating in major parades.

We don’t know if the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence made their way to Manhattan to roll their wheels in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Nobody seems to know exactly where they disappeared to. They are a queer, unpredictable group. We just know there will be no Groundhog Roast at St. Alfonzo’s this year. Skippy is truly apoplectic.

To make things worse, we can’t hang around until Saturday when St. Alfonzo’s will hold one of its legendary Pancake Breakfasts. Poor Skippy.

But life goes on. We’re happy to learn that Father Guido Sarducci’s preferred parish survives. And that the bacchanal that masquerades as a croquet tournament is still held monthly.

So for those of you who decided not to spatchcock a fowl this year and are left waiting out the roasting time, please enjoy this video:

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Tio Wally Eats America: Thanksgiving Message

I’m happy to have Tio Wally (long-time Me So Hungry reader) aboard to send in his eating adventures from across America.

Greetings from … I don’t know where I am today yet. But when I find out, I’ll let y’all know.

I just wanted to wish the Me So Hungry universe a happy National Food-Coma Day. (The effects of Tryptophan, by the way, is an urban myth. It’s eating double or triple your normal caloric intake, exausting your poor body, that makes you sleepy. Still, “Tryptophan” is awfully fun to blame, not to mention, say.)

In that spirit, I’m posting a song I wrote, recorded, and performed by my lonesome about eating the “other” dark meat. It’s called “Mi Gato” (My Cat). It may not be genius, new or exciting, and I screwed up the translation a bit, but it’s a snappy little ditty nonetheless. It’s about making fajitas, or more accurately, gatitas.

In sum it’s a heartwarming, food-centric ditty. My way of wishing MSH readers worldwide a Happy Thanksgiving. And if you know any Spanish speakers, have them translate it for you.

If you’d like to hear more of my illustrious output, visit me at http://soundcloud.com/tiowally. (I sent Jason a CD. He said it flew really well.)

Abraço.

And so we roll.

Bobby Flay’s Holiday Recipes with Hellmann’s Mayonnaise

The last Hellmann’s event turned to me to a devout Hellmann’s fan. I haven’t stopped eating mayonnaise sandwiches since. I seriously can’t stop. All they did was give me a jar of that stuff to take home and my roommates have witnessed me mayoing every meal. I can’t think of any other product I endorse so strongly, if at all. It’s the fucking best mayonnaise.

This time with two jars of mayonnaise

Once again Bobby Flay and Full House’s Lori Loughlin showed us some recipes and tips. Last time was like a corn chip with some mayonnaise on it. This time was some real tasty stuff –Turkey Reuben w/ Thousand Island Coleslaw, Turkey Paella w/ Lemon-Smoked Paprika Aioli and Balsamic-Glazed Stuffed Mushrooms (which were the balls!).

Some interesting notes from the luncheon:
– Bobby Flay will eat pizza after the NYC Marthon run
– His favorite pizza at the moment: Motorino (He knew he’d get trouble for saying that)
– The same company that makes Hellmann’s makes Axe Body Spray (as Simon from Plate of the Day informed me). Maybe that’s why I have such a strong connection to Hellmann’s.
– Mixing mayo into rice (Turkey Paella). That’s an interesting idea. I love mayonnaise!
– Bobby Flay’s #1 tip for holidays meals. Always have a pot of chicken stock available. Used to moisten the meats and for everything else. His restaurants go through tons of it. But what about mayonnaise?

The Stuffed Mushrooms were so good with mayo glaze.

Perhaps I’m going overboard for my love of Hellmann’s and my integrity is now questionable, but I have to say I will aways sell out and shill for mayonnaise. Therefore their recipes (including the mushrooms) after the jump. Maybe next time I’ll show you and Bobby Flay my recipe for Mayonnaise Sandwich.
