Foodbloggging MetLife Stadium – Jets Preseason

Dang, I realize how blessed we are to have Tebow come to New York. Now I get to go see him play for the first time. And it was all our first times going to see any kind of NFL game, even if it’s only preseason. I found super cheap $7 tickets on Stubhub. There were even $3 ones, but those are even farther back and I’m scared to be up that high at the edge of the stadium. I’d feel like I’ll fall off the backside.

I asked everyone to meet me at Penn Station for a cheap beer and a slice at Rosa’s Pizza before we got on the train. Only problem was that I couldn’t find Rosa’s. I walked in circles and only found Shonali. We found a pizza place called Don Pepi. Actually we found two Don Pepis. Calls to Jody didn’t help. He kept telling us where they all were, but it was like we were in a different dimension of time and space. We had them meet us instead near the TGI Fridays. Apparently, there’s another floor in Penn Station with the same restaurants. They have another Moe’s Burrito, another Planet Smoothie, and another TGI Fridays.

Anyway, we found cheap beer at this one place with a big banner for $1 Draft Beer (16oz). I ordered the 32oz for $5. And then I realized how stupid I was. I should’ve gotten two 16 oz. Now that I think about it, maybe she did only charge me $2. I usually don’t pay attention and just hand over cash. Anyway, it’s a good deal even if it was $5 because you can brown bag it on the train.

Fast forward up several escalators to the nose bleed section. The seats were actually not bad. I kinda like the view from the cheap seats. It’s like looking at a video game. You can see the routes play out.

I bought Todd a hot dog and I got a beer and burger from the Brooklyn Custom Grind stand. $24 for all that. I had done some research on what I should eat at MetLife Stadium and found this article that ranked this Brooklyn Custom Grind burger as the top food. I don’t know how drunk this guy was when he wrote this, because I was wasted and this burger was gross. It looks like the kind of burger you’d get in elementary school, made of soy and filler.

Shonali also ordered the same burger but for some reason they put stuff on hers. I thought it was a mound of potato salad, but turned out to be lettuce, tomato and mayo.  I was hoping it was potato salad.

$9.50 Beer sales get cutoff at half time. Dang. So had to get my last one in and ended up getting a $3 Value Italian Roast Pork as well. It was the cheapest food there. Jody got nachos. I can’t say the food here is good. I felt like I was eating at a skating rink. The best part was the condiment section.

Anyway, the game was fun, even though I was too drunk to pay attention. It’s kinda weird at Jets games. It’s like you have to be brave to wear a Tebow jersey, if you don’t want to be chastised by the fans rooting for the same team. At the same time, everyone hates Tebow, but yet you hear the biggest cheers for him in the game. I’d never imagine I’d hear so many little black kids root for Tebow. I know why I like him. But why do they like him? …They must be dreamers.

Speaking of Tebow, I got this new Jets action figure from Amazon yesterday. I can’t believe they gave him a limp wrist.

Brisket Lab @ Bobby Redd’s Church & NCAA Football 13 Review

Okay, dang. It took me a long time to get to write this post. NYC is takes a toll on my time and body. I’m too tired to party from all the partying.

We went to Dan Delaney’s Brisket Lab at Bobby Redd’s Church in Bed-Stuy/Bushwick this past Tuesday. The old former-church is rad –converted to an art space. I’m impressed that all the stained glass windows are still perfectly intact. There was a beer tap in the confession booth. Rusty kept making Sandusky jokes.

The brisket was good. I asked for the fatty cut and it was delicious. A half pound of meat is quite a lot though. I read somewhere you should really eat 1/4 lbs of meat per serving. So we were all stuffed by the end.

Brother’s Green of Youtube’s Hungry channel make the side salad. Tall Six Points cans for $2. The Grand Street Stompers band was really good. I see them perform at Harefield Road sometimes. This was a really fun event. I have 3 more events to go to to collect all the meat I pre-purchased. I’m going to be meated out by the end of this summer.

All the brisket (2,500+ pounds) are sold out, but check http://delaneybbq.com/brisketlab for future events.

I had some other things to bring home that night after I was done partying at BrisketLab. I just got a Frogg Togg Chilly Pad towel to keep me cool this summer. You just wet it and it cools you down. Why didn’t anyone tell me about this thing before? Or at least tell me that even a plain wet towel would work too?

Then I played the brand new NCAA 13 for PS3 –preordered at Game Stop for the exclusive Tim Tebow bonus. You can put him on any team you want, but surely EA is going to go to hell for allowing this…

I started my season with Tebow leading the Gators. It was fun, but I kept losing to Texas A&M. This game felt like bullshit. Why weren’t there any Option Run plays called with Tebow? Why did Tebow throw so many interceptions? You look at his college stats and he’s an amazing passer –with passing yards, TDs, completion percentage and QB rating comparable to an Andrew Luck …and Luck didn’t have all those rushing yards and TDs like Tebow nor had to play against SEC defenses. I couldn’t believe I was losing to Texas A&M so badly. It felt like EA made Tebow’s abilities more like how critics see him in the NFL, rather than how he truly was in college. I felt so jipped.

Tim Tebow Passing Rushing
Season Team GP Rating Att Comp Pct Yds TD INT Sack Att Yds TD
2006 Florida Gators 14 201.7 33 22 66.7 358 5 1 0 89 469 8
2007 Florida Gators 13 172.5 350 234 66.9 3,286 32 6 13 210 895 23
2008 Florida Gators 14 172.4 298 192 64.4 2,747 30 4 15 176 673 12
2009 Florida Gators 14 155.6 304 213 70.1 2,895 21 5 25 217 910 14
Totals 55 170.8 985 661 67.1 9,286 88 15 53 692 2947 57

Now that I am less drunk and pissed off, maybe I was getting beaten so bad because I’m playing with this year’s Florida Gators and Urban Meyer isn’t calling the plays. That’s probably why I sucked. But still… Tebow. They did make him able to scramble well though. Anyway, it’s really not much better than the NCAA game three years ago. They tricked me into buying this for Tebow. I guess it’s still worth it.

Miss USA & Loreley’s Sausage Platters

Yesterday, we started off by going to the Yellow Lounge party in Soho. I think this event was about bringing International and Classical artists to big city hipsters. This was their first one in the U.S. …and Miss USA was there to welcome it all.

When she first walked by, I wasn’t sure it was her and was going to ask. But then I realized how stupid that question was, since she was wearing a big sash that said “Miss USA.”

I asked a few people and yep, she was the one I admired for answering the Transgender question at the pageant just a couple of weeks ago. I knew from that moment when I watched it on TV, I had to meet this girl. And there she was right in front of me. …That’s like the Secret.

Any other day before, I would have just hung out and watched from afar. But I’ve been reading Tim Tebow’s autobiography. Maybe only a few chapters so far, but I feel like it gave me the courage to walk up and talk to Miss USA. I couldn’t believe how easy it was. She seemed very humble when I congratulated her and talked about the transgender question. She also seemed to have held my hand a little too long when we were shaking, but I don’t know if it’s because I wasn’t letting go.

I’m glad I did it. It made my night. My friend Shonali does that all the time –walks up to talk to people. I should be more like Shonali …and Tebow.

They’ll be having more Yellow Lounge event soon –free music, complimentary drinks, Beauty Pageant winners. Like their Facebook page to be up to date. https://www.facebook.com/YellowLoungeUS

Afterwards Todd and I went to Loreley in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and ate this awesome Sausage Platter and Skewers.

Loreley - 64 Frost St (@ Meeker Ave) Brooklyn, NY 11211

I’m going to try my hand at DJing here at Loreley next Tuesday June 26th, 2012. It’ll be my first time ever. I’m excited. I’ll be playing my Mashups. Hope you guys come out.

Food Film Festival Filmmaker of the Year!

Dang. Chicago was awesome. The Oyster Party on Saturday was insane. Pics of that coming soon. I was pretty hungover the following day during awards ceremony. My head hurt. And dang, I won! Stepped to receive the coveted slotted spoon trophy and got back to my seat, turned to Rusty and asked “Hey, what did I just win?”

The spoon said 2011 Food Film Festival Fannie Mae Filmmaker of the Year! Dang. I honestly didn’t know I was up for any award in Chicago. We just came to party. The New York Food Film Festival was so awesome. Had to do it again in Chicago.

I know I didn’t get to say much when I got the award because my mouth was full of Turtle Burger. So I really want to thank the Food Film Festival for the awesome party. Rusty and I had such a great time.

Winning the award made me think of the things I’ve learned this year…

1) Just Do It: Ever since I stopped thinking or worrying about what I’m going to do and just do it, everything got so easy. The action was much easier than thinking about it. And then in the end, you are doing what you want to do and living your dreams.

2) Be open to opportunities: This year, I went on the tour with Shonali. I accepted Rik’s offer to make new food webisodes. I entered this film festival. I’m co-hosting parties with my friends. Let Dave and Tio Wally contribute to the food blog. Went on a date. All of this with initial hesitation, but I’m grateful I said yes to it all. It made my life so much more wonderful.

3) Be giving: I think there really is something about doing something for the benefit of others, whether it’s making people smile, giving them a big tip or sharing something cool with them. It makes what you do honest and genuine …and in return, I find people like that a lot and will give back to you with treasures. It’s a weird circle of giving.

4) Believe in yourself: I remember a stranger once told me that I could never be a food blogger, because there were too many food bloggers already. It hurt to hear even a douche bag say that to me. I’ve been food blogging for over four years now. So what does that guy know. There’s also another guy that people said he couldn’t be what he wanted to be because he was different. He never gave up and believed in himself. Now he’s winning. His name is Tebow.

I’d like to thank Rik and Nancy, Shonali, Tio Wally, Rusty, Dave Dondero, Andrew WK, Tim Tebow and everyone along the way for showing me the way. Excuse me if I sound preachy …I’m just trying to be Tebow-like.

Halal Truck on East 11th St & 1st Ave (East Village)

Rusty and I were watching the Denver game last Sunday at O’Hanlon’s in the East Village, rooting for our boy Tebow. Yikes!

During half time, I walked around to try to figure out what’s the meaning of life after I just saw Tebow get smashed, smothered, and diced. I passed by the Halal truck on the South-East corner of East 11th St and 1st Ave. I’ve passed there many late nights before and it always smelled so good. Most of the time I see a cart there, but this day it’s a truck.

Got the Lamb & Chicken combo over rice with white sauce, hot sauce $6. Dang. This is some of the best and spiciest Lamb & Chicken combo I’ve had in a long time. The rice is very similar to the Famous Halal Guys on 53rd & 6th. But I like this better. They put slices of jalapeno in there for extra spiciness. The chicken is not chopped up as much as most halal carts. The flavor was tangy and spicy. I just might have a reason to go back to root for Tebow tomorrow.

I suppose being a professional athlete has it’s ups and downs just like the challenges of real life. Maybe last week loss is just a stepping stone to success. I hope Tebow learns from last week and becomes the best NFL winner in the world. So keep Tebowing.

Late Night Sandwich @ Mulholland’s

Had to see my boy Tebow start for the Broncos at my favorite Williamsburg sports bar …or possibly the only real sports bar in Williamsburg. It was packed. I didn’t know kids in Williamsburg cared about sports.

I got the Late Night Sandwich (2 SUNNY SIDE UP EGGS ON COUNTRY STYLE WHITE BREAD WITH MONTERAY JACK CHEESE, BACON, LETTUCE, TOMATO AND MAYO). Dang this was tasty mess of a sandwich. I got egg drippings all over the floor. Then mopped it up with $10 Bud Light pitchers.

What a game. What a sandwich. It truly is Tebow Time!
