Halušky at Ukrainian East Village Restaurant

Dave has been talking about this HaluÅ¡ky dish that he recently had at a friend’s house. Small potato dumplings similar to gnocchi, mixed with sauerkraut. Looks like one of the few places in New York to find HaluÅ¡ky is at Ukrainian East Village Restaurant …just like it was one of the few places to find Chicken Kiev in my Don Draper phase.

The dumplings were much bigger than what Dave had. These were hand formed. I understand they’re often made through a strainer.

The dumplings sat there bathing in a pool of melted butter, topped with sauerkraut and bacon. Kind of bland at first, but after much salt and pepper, it was some buttery gut filling food.

Chicken Kiev to be like Don Draper

Went on a search for Chicken Kiev because that’s what the whole last episode of Mad Men was about. Through Menupages’ useful food finding feature —could go to  Brighton Beach and get taken down by the Russian mob or a fancy expensive restaurant where people might look at me weird for taking pics or the cheap and close Ukrainian East Village Restaurant (where I had the big combination platter) …the choice was easy.

$11.95, the Chicken Kiev came with two sides and a salad. I expected the butter to come squirting out when I cut into it. I was careful. Nothing squirted. Perhaps the butter had already leaked out when it got to me. Strong herb and garlic flavor. Decent overall. Oh yeah, and the food looks better when you’re not sitting next to the purple neon sign.

The New York Times wrote this piece about the Chicken Kiev fine dining restaurant that Don Draper took his date to –Jimmy’s La Grange.

Ukrainian East Village Restaurant

I dragged Matt to the Ukrainian National Home for some Eastern European food. I felt bad that his Wiener Schnitzel didn’t look as substantial as my Ukrainian Combination Platter (stuffed cabbage, varenyky, kovbasa, kasha varnishkes), but he seemed to like it anyway. I was stuffed like that cabbage. Always wondered what the Ukrainian National Home was and I still wonder. I think there was a Ukrainian dance party next door.
