4 Course Vegan – Underground Brooklyn Dinner

Aaron & Kristy came into town and we all went to this underground gourmet vegan dinner in a some guy’s apartment. $40 for a four course dinner …came with a bonus two courses.

I couldn’t believe how spicy it was. I’d like to think I’m a tough guy, but it certainly hit my limits of what I can handle. The watermelon with the tiny sliver of jalapeño was mind boggling spicy. I’m thinking it was because the water helped spread the heat in my mouth. I have to try this at home. Similarly, the Avocado Dumpling with Lemongrass Broth and Red Chile Garlic Paste –the liquid possibly intensified the heat. The spiciness was awesome for me. Made me sweat. I loved it. I just don’t understand how other people can deal.

I was skeptical going into dinner because it’s vegan. But if no one ever told me it was, I probably wouldn’t have noticed. Nothing trying to act like meat. Although, there was a ravioli which I thought was stuffed with ricotta cheese, but it was a cheese made out of cashew. Again, I wouldn’t have noticed. It was just good food. I was impressed how Chef Matteo is able to cook, plate and serve around twenty people at one time all by himself. And he didn’t turn his nose at me for bringing Miller High Life (BYOB) …although it is the champagne of beers.

The Underground Lobster Pound – Lobster Roll

I tried out Ben’s new “Underground Lobster Pound” the other night. It’s a secret Brooklyn underground spot where you can get a lobster roll at night. Usually around 5-10pm …and after hours he can slide you a roll through the mail slot. Dang, I don’t know if I just gave away too much information. Anyway the lobster roll was really awesome. There was a lot of fresh meat on that sucker. Ben then proceeded to cook up several live lobster in front of us for future rolls and bisque (which is available tonight if you’re quick enough to find out where it is). Right now it’s close company that have access, so he doesn’t get shut down (at least so soon). You can contact him on his site Brooklyn Chowder Surfer to inquire. Don’t be shy.

I hope you guys get to try it, because it’s really good, he’s a great guy and you’re getting something homemade from a celebrity chef here –Throwdown with Bobby Flay: Chowder episode, organizer of the Brooklyn Fishing Derby, guest on Martha Stewart Living, Heritage Radio host – “Catch It, Cook It, Eat It”

For more on the Underground Lobster Pound, check out this well-produced video from Foodcurated.com

Also here’s a nice tip Ben shared with us on pulling out the lobster tail meat.

Bushwick Boat Titanic Chill-Out Party

Secret boat party or not-so-secret crowded boat party? They don’t tell you where it is. So you get on a shuttle van that takes you to the boat. I thought they were going to blindfold us. We got there on the early side. It was quite pleasant to hang out drinking a beer on the deck floating on shallow smelling water amongst the industrial warehouses and the polluted night sky glow. It had a surreal feel to it.

I bought a homemade cheese tamale on the ship with some green chili sauce. Well done for being on an old ferry boat. Some guy walked up to me later and covertly asked me if I wanted to buy a tamale. I told him I just had one. I was wondering why he was so quiet about it and why he called it molly for short.

The bass from the dance music on the 2nd level resonated the boat so much, I really felt like I couldn’t control my bowels. I think they hit the brown note. I was scared.

I ran into some friends, one of which was actually performing this night with his band, Clinical Trials. Pretty cool. And as I look up this party right now, I see Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto) performed too. Dang, I wish I knew. I must’ve been on the dance floor at that time, figuring I could get away from the brown note by being closer to the music.

I had half of Todd’s cheeseburger from the grill. Surprisingly it wasn’t from the freezer, but hand pattied seasoned with onions. Most things usually taste good after a few drinks, but this burger was juicy.

Video of Miho Hatori playing on the boat. Some guy dances up on her around 2:30 and she punches him.

Bushwick Eat-Easy

Bonnie took me to this underground Bushwick supper club. This was one of the most fanciest meals I’ve had in a long time. Everything including the butter was homemade (except the cheese). This is the second Bushwick apt/loft I’ve been to that has opened up their home for supper. Scandalous and delicious …Scandelicious.

Celery purée soup
Cold plate – Cajun pork pate on crostini, carrot pate on wheat crostini with cheese shavings, mushroom pate on house cracker, chicken liver mousse on house cracker, pickled beet, pickled radish
Hot plate – asparagus and goat cheese soufflé
Palate cleanser – peach and chive purée on cucumber
Entrée – butter and shallot braised ribeye with mustard gravy on a parsnip purée, mushrooms bernaise
Salad – endive salad with fennel shavings, walnuts, temme de pomme goat cheese, house dressing
Dessert – lemon chiffon cake with tarragon ice cream
