Nha Trang One and Shred For Your Life 2014

I headed out to check out the Shred For Your Life guitar competition last night at Santos Party House. But before, I had a bite to eat at Nha Tran One Vietnamese nearby. I remember going with my coworkers here years ago and really dug the fried frog legs.

This time, I got the Canh Chua Ca (Hot & Sour Fish soup). Pretty big for the small order $9.50. It had a lot of salmon in it. Very good tasting. Although I couldn’t finish it, because I also got an order of spring rolls. I love how they give you the lettuce and mint to wrap them up with.

05 Shred For Your Life 2014 Guitar Competition

Then over to the Shred For Your Life. It has all the majesty and showmanship of an air guitar competition, but with real guitars. There was a guy with a horse head and a guy dressed like an ancient Chinese god playing this tiny toy guitar –and he ripped it. I was rooting for him. But the winner was really really good. He plays in the band, the Giraffes.

Before the competition, I ran into an old friend so I walked over to him. Then I realized that Zooey Deschanel was standing next to us and I was like “Oh, isn’t that that actress?” And he acted like he didn’t know who she was. Acted like he never saw Elf. I couldn’t believe it. It was like he trying to play it too cool. I’m not sure he even turned to look at her when I asked. He had to know who I was talking about. Now I get what “SMH” means.

Then when I left the show and walked to the subway stop, I realized that I was on the wrong side of the street for the uptown train. So I started running across the street because the traffic light was about to turn. Then I realized Zooey Deschanel was right in front of me and it looked like I was about to chase her …and I think her friend turned around and his eyes got big when he saw me. Then I tried to play it cool, by acting like I didn’t know who she was and started walking in another direction.

New Tu Do Vietnamese Restaurant

We wanted something new to do, so we went to New Tu Do Restaurant for some Vietnamese food.

Todd accidentally ordered the Shrimp and Crab Spring Rolls from the picture underneath the glass table top. Pretty good stuff though.

Then I got this huge ass bowl of Pho for $6.95. I barely ate it and still got stuffed.

Also on the table were some grilled pork skewers and extra spring rolls. They give you bean sprouts, mint leaves, lettuce and the fish sauce with each dish. There was a lot of it on the table.

Then ended the meal with some Vietnamese Coffee. I didn’t realize it was a whole process.

Somehow our meal was $50 between the two of us. I thought this place was supposed to be cheap. But I guess we drank a lot of beer.

Pho Bang’s Vietnamese Ham Are Not for Resale!!!

I went out to get some dinner at Pho Bang. I got the #1 Pho (Tai Nam Gau Gan Sach – combination rice noodle beef soup with fresh eye of round, brisket, tendon and omosa) $6.50 regular size. To me regular size is big. I saw the big size at the table next to me. Geez.

Really good Pho. Hit the spot. I threw in bean sprouts, mint leaves and lime wedges, hoisen and cock sauce. Great meal.

Then Todd came and met up with me there when I was finishing up. He was curious about the sign that said “Vietnamese Hams Are Not For Resale!!!” They must be freakin’ good if people are buying them to resell them. Todd bought a $5 small one. It was rolled up in a banana leaf. We tried it out on Sunday football. It was spongy like fish balls. Tasted like mushed up pork, but not really flavorful. We will not be trying to resell them.

Tio Wally Eats America: Khahn’s Garden Restaurant

I’m happy to have Tio Wally (long-time Me So Hungry reader) aboard to send in his eating adventures from across America. Here he is in San Jose, California.

Greetings from Sunnyvale, California
N 37° 22.263′  W 121° 59.004′  Elev. 36 ft.

The SS Me So Hungry sailed into this aptly named San Francisco Bay-area port and was greeted with some of the best weather this planet has to offer. And some awesome food to match.

I had the good fortune to meet up with a very dear friend I hadn’t seen for nearly 40 years. He promptly whisked me off to Khahn’s Garden Restaurant, an incredible Vietnamese restaurant in nearby San Jose, located just a couple of blocks from the Winchester Mystery House.

For starters we had Fresh Rolls, sort of a spring roll wrapped in rice paper, that were simply the best. Cool and refreshing, with a hint of mint, they were served with a mild hoisin dipping sauce with crushed peanuts in it. Man, were they good. Really delicate flavors and made with the freshest ingredients.

The Rice Plate entrees we ordered came with a remarkably simple salad of iceberg lettuce. It was fresh, crunchy, in a vinaigrette dressing somewhat like watered-down seasoned rice vinegar, yet still incredibly flavorful. The dressing was so good, in fact, that I drank the rest of it after finishing the salad.

For his entree my friend ordered the BBQ Pork, thinly sliced marinated pork loin with a really interesting, sweetish flavor. I was impressed by how tender the meat was and, again, by the delicate-ness of the flavor. For my entree I got Lemon Grass Chicken. It too was delicious and tender. I was surprised, though, because I was expecting it to be saucy, like the Thai make it. But it was actually sort of dry sauce-wise, while the chicken was moist and tender. It was quite heavenly, really.

For dessert my friend got Flan. I didn’t expect to see flan at a Vietnamese restaurant. I always thought flan was a Latino thing. Then again, San Jose is a very diverse place. For my dessert I ordered a scrumptious little affair they called Paradiso. It was a thin little circle of sponge cake topped with alternating layers of Mango and Coconut mousse, topped with a fresh, ripe Gooseberry. It was so pretty that I almost hated to eat it. I expected the flavors to be very pronounced but they weren’t at all. In fact it didn’t really taste of Mango or Coconut. It sure was good though. It was nice and cold, and served with a chilled spoon to boot.

I thought Khahn’s was incredibly reasonably priced, especially considering the quality of the food; the total bill came to $38. And the service was incredibly top-notch, too.

Khahn’s boasts that it’s been voted Best Vietnamese Restaurant in San Jose for 7 years in a row. I could easily taste why.

And so we roll.

Lollipop Vietnamese Sandwiches & House of Vans

I headed out to House of Vans this past Thursday to see King Kahn and the Shrines. I ran through the crazy derecho storm to get to the subway. You gotta check out the crazy sky in this photo. It’s like Gozer.

Then when I got out in Greenpoint, I figured I should grab a bite at Lollipop. Jody told me they have really good Banh Mi Vietnamese Sandwiches, but they always take a long time to make. It’s true. I got the Classic ($4.75 plus tax) and it was great, but did take longer than I’d expect. The ground pork was really good in it. They spice it up and I loved it. It’s possibly the best Banh Mi in Greenpoint …although it might be the only Banh Mi in Greenpoint?

Lollipop - 685 Manhattan Ave (btwn Bedford & Norman Ave) Brooklyn, NY 11222

After the nice sandwich, I went to House of Vans –the sneaker company’s private skate park built in a old industrial warehouse in Greenpoint. They’ve been having free summer shows the past two years with some cool bands. Lots of people, but huge space with a gigantic fan on the ceiling. This night, the bass was booming for Nicky Da B, which felt like a gay club rager, with people booty shaking on stage. It was cool.

Apparently, it was an all-ages show and the Heineken Light all free. I’ve never seen so many drunk middle-schoolers. One girl was making out with her boyfriend and asking my friends about an umbrella, then tried to make out with another dude. There was almost a fight. But I think they were all 13-15 years old. I remember we used to be able to do dumb shit when we were young, but I always thought it was harder to that stuff now, since everywhere I go is usually 21+. I guess it’s good to know that kids can still be dumb if they want.

Luu’s Baguette – Pho Noodles

It was a super hot New York day, when I walked around trying to decide what to eat. I must’ve walked around for 45 mins in that heat, trying to avoid carbs. In the end, I ended up at Luu’s Baguette in Kips Bay and ordered a hot bowl of Pho Noodles. I don’t know if I was stupid or just delirious. It was a pretty good bowl though.

I got the Pho Tai (Raw Beef of Eye Round $6.95). They weren’t kidding. It was quite rare in the middle of the slices, which made it a little chewy. But overall, it was rather good. Super quick and pretty cheap for not having to go to Chinatown.

I saw a guy eating the Banh Mi sandwich. It looked really big.

Luu’s Baguette –  134 East 26th St (btwn Lexington & 3rd Ave) New York, NY 10016

Let me also take the opportunity to promote my label’s newest release —The Levitations. It was an album that was supposed to come out about 13 years ago by a guy that used to be in the The Rock*A*Teens. He’s now a peach farmer in Georgia and most of it still remains a mystery. It’s real dirty rock n roll. Out on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, etc.

Ben Thanh Vietnamese (Charlotte, North Carolina)

I’ve posted snippets from the road, but now I’m ready to share our full-on adventures and photos from our Shonali Bhowmik 100 Oak’s Revival tour down South…

Day 3: We had a blast at the Shiprock party at Snug Harbor. The next day, Scott took us around town. We had lunch at Ben Thanh. I was a little skeptical at first since I’ve had plenty of Vietnamese in Chinatown and wasn’t sure what to expect in Charlotte. But this place was damn good. Crispy Quail, Bun Noodles, Spring Rolls with the fish sauce! Complimentary Easy-Bake Chocolate Cake for dessert!
