White Castle in Williamsburg Brooklyn closed

It’s an end of an era. The White Castle in Williamsburg, Brooklyn closed. I remember taking my old girlfriend there for their candle-lit table service Valentine’s Day –waiting twenty minutes for our table, while watching the crackheads walking straight up to the counter to order their food. I remember when I first moved to NYC twelve years ago, they had bullet proof glass at the ordering counter. Then at some point, when the area was becoming more gentrified, they took down the bullet proof glass and renovated the restaurant. Then soon after, they apparently got held up and then you couldn’t order inside after midnight. I remember my friends and I hailing a taxi to go through the drive-thru for us. Then at some point the neighborhood got even more gentrified and then it was back to 24-hour service inside. White Castle is one of those places you can depend on getting something to eat when you’re really drunk super late at night, but then you’d regret it when you find the slider boxes in your bedroom in the morning.

An end of an era.

White Castle’s Chicken & Waffle Sandwich

Signs just went up today at White Castle for their new Chicken and Waffle slider. Chicken patty between two Belgian waffles with white gravy and bacon crumbles. Two for $5 or $2.69 each.

The also have a breakfast menu with the waffles. Waffle sandwiches with egg and cheese with a choice of bacon or sausage $1.99. Waffles and Mrs. Butterworth’s $1.69.

I ordered one of the Chicken and Waffle sandwiches. I saw the lady carefully assembling it, neatly wrapping it up and sliding it into a slider box.

It was really good! The white gravy and bacon had a good peppery taste. It kind of was like eating chicken and waffles.

I imagine if they used the chicken breast from their tasty Chicken Breast Sandwiches, it would be even better. I wonder if you can special order it that way. It probably wouldn’t fit into the box though.

White Castle Crispy Jalapeño Cheese Sliders

I’ve been on the record a few times to say that the White Castle Jalapeño Cheese Burgers is the best thing at White Castle. I love them. Those jalapeno cheese slices give them so much flavor.

Now they are offering Crispy Jalapeños to top it off. I’ve never seen anything like these little crunchies. They look like the run-off of fried pickles. But they are a pretty good topping. Gives the slider some crunchy texture and really packs more heat. Probably 2-3x more spicy than a regular Jalapeño Cheese Slider.

You can also get these Crispy Jalapeños topped on Chicken Ring Sliders, Breakfast Sandwiches and Cheese Fries.

White Castle’s Angus Steak Chili

White Castle now has chili! Their sign is both scary and tempting. I think it’s because the chili photo looks good and “Angus Steak” sounds fancy, but I know it’s at White Castle.

They have three sizes –Small, Medium and Family Size, ranging from $2.79 to $9.99. I went with the small.

I was expecting it to be like the chili you’d squirt onto a hot dog at a gas station, but this was actually good. The texture was nice. It was all bits of real steak.

I want to compare it to Wendy’s chili, but it’s difficult because they are so different. I like both of them. Wendy’s is the better deal, being on the 99cent menu. White Castle has more of interesting texture. Makes me feel like I’m eating fancy food.

White Castle’s Chicken Breast Sliders

We got a flier for a party in our building’s shared backyard. I think that’s so we don’t get mad when DJ Christopher kicks out the jams past 3am outdoors among the 30 apartments. Todd and I went to check it out. I figured I’d be neighborly and introduce myself to the host. I told her I lived at the other end of the building. The first thing she said was how disgusting my side of the backyard was. I was taken aback. All I could see was one big shared slab of concrete that I walk out onto about five times a year. I didn’t understand. She asked me to sit down so she could explain why I live in filth. The guy that was trying to get her in the sack rolled his eyes and she caught him. I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one that thought she was a bitch.

So as DJ Christopher was winding down a little before 4am, Todd got the craving for White Castle. They’ve been advertising Online Ordering. We couldn’t figure out how to order through his smart phone (which now I see you need to install Microsoft Silverlight on your web browser), so we just called them to order. I was surprised they took phone orders so late. How do they know if you’re going to really show up? …I don’t think actually made our order until we got there.

We got some delicious Chicken Breast Sliders that Dave Dondero brought to my attention. They are really good. Much different tasting than Chicken Ring sandwiches. These are real white meat chicken breasts with cheese. It’s a mini moist chicken breast sandwich. Surprisingly one of the best items on the menu, next to Jalapeño cheese sliders and mozzarella sticks.

The best thing about having a food blog is that it gives me the opportunity to be passive-aggressive.

What the Hell are Garlic Cheese Saver Sacks?

I kept seeing the signs all around White Castle for the Garlic Cheese Saver Sacks $2.99 special, but there were no pictures. I didn’t know what they were, but I finally went to find out. I thought they’d be fried garlic cheese sticks or something weird, but the menu inside showed it’s Garlic Cheese over 2 chicken ring sliders or 2 mushroom beef sliders or 3 regular beef sliders. I went with the latter. Not a bad deal with fries and a drink included. Turns out to be melted cheese with some minced garlic on it. Coincidentally, I just bought a huge jar of minced garlic in oil. I guess I could have made it myself.

It was pretty tasty. Garlicky and more interesting than a regular slider. But I still think their winner is the Jalapeño Cheese Sliders …FTW!

Look how giant their straws are. This straw is all the way down to the bottom of the cup!

Flaming Lips at Terminal 5 & Chicken Ring Sandwich

I wished upon a star to see the Flaming Lips and Jiminy Cricket (aka The Thrillist) made my wish come true. I won tickets to the show last night at Terminal 5. Met up with Lara and we had our first Flaming Lips experience.

After, we ended up walking into a closed restaurant. It was really weird. The door was open, lights on, but no one was there. I felt like we were in a Twilight Zone episode and there was no more food to blog.

I ended up at White Castle to try their Chicken Ring Sandwich. That’s one dry bready sandwich. I kept squirting hot sauce on it, but it didn’t work. Nothing on the menu can beat their Jalapeño Cheeseburger!

White Castle’s Sweet Potato Fries

There’s a sign up for White Castle Sweet Potato Fries. Dang, that’s a lotta calories. Pretty decent sweet potato fries. They gave me some Sweet Cinnamon Dipping sauce that was gross. I got used to it though and started to like it. But by that time it was like eating dessert à la Taco Bell’s Cinnamon Twists.
